 I think Spike has had it great for the past two now three seasons, he's an ambassador to the dragon lands, can easily cover for Twilight's princess duties including boosting community morale, is best buds with two world leaders, and now he has gained wings and a stronger control of his fire breath. And Twilight even said she knew he was going to grow up, but will never get rid of him, even when he grows into Smaug. Now all that's left is for him to know who his parents where and that will conclude his arc...episode 24 of season 8...in the words of Patrick Star "Life is good!!"

 

The little guy has come a long way! And it looks like being Twilights assistant isn't his life career, he will make a fine politician, he is a dragon after all like most they sleep under giant piles of money.

And once Spike's arc ends, he'll be completely out of the way for Season 9, in addition to already having had parts in Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Applejack episodes in the first 4 seasons.
