Apple relatives in Hollow Shades

In Shadow Play, Applejack said there was a branch of the Apple family in Hollow Shades. And when they got to Hollow Shades to fight the Pony of Shadows, one must wonder whether or not something bad happened to those relatives (i.e. were killed) before the heroes arrived. Or am I looking too much into it? Sunburst did speculate that they would have to live far away since Hollow Shades was long abandoned for eons.

Sounds like something they retconned, like how Meadow brook was said to be a unicorn mage, but was shown as an earth pony medicine mare.

Yeah, my first thought was that the Pony of Shadows straight up killed an entire town.

Hollow Shades is a very confusing location to say the least. It's always been shown on the map as this dark town that seems to have to keep lights on, surrounded by dense forest. But the place has been abandoned for a long time apparently, and it's outward appearance doesn't match written descriptions because it's been altered by the Pony of Shadows, but the Well of Shame wasn't known about and has been there the whole time.

As for members of the Apple family, maybe their used to be dense forest that blocked out so much light, apple trees couldn't grow, or maybe the well had dried up along with the surrounding landscape so every plant died of thirst and that's why it looks the way it does. And maybe the current state of the place was never written about because everypony left and none returned before things got as bad as they are.

I remember being so excited to see Hollow Shades because I thought finally, the unofficial home of Bat Ponies in Equestria will get some attention. I mean the town has been on the map of Equestria since they first released it!

I'd like to think that maybe Bat Ponies were there, along with others who accepted the darkness. A sort of rogue town within Celestia's domain, post banishment of Luna, but the timeline doesn't match up.

Are you suggesting they moved away?

Yeah. Think of it like the dust bowl. Drought occurs, plants die, soil erodes, becomes an awful place to live where you can't maintain your agriculture.
