Ponies MBTI type?

This comes up from time to time. We could do with a revisit (given we have a bunch of new neurotic main ponies to look at, at least one girl-shaped most of the time) but all the mane 6 seem to have their little quirks.

Here are some analyses from a fair while back:

pinkie, dashie, rarity, AJ, and Flutters

And Silver Quill has done a few videos... ok, a LOT of videos..

and a bunch of MBTI mappings:

I'm just going to say it. I have no idea what MBTI  or E/INTJ means.

It's the Myers-Briggs thing. The idea is that you can classify personality types with a simple four letter code (so, pretty course strokes there)

First letter - are people {I}ntroverted or {E}xtroverted (the idea that you are either a stay-at-home type like Twilight/Fluttershy, or loud and brash like Dashie or Pinkie) Second letter - do people take everything on face value, based on {S}ensory input, or do they prefer to make an i{N}tuitive step based on the "big picture"

Third letter - do people like to ponder and {T}hink their way though a decision, or do they prefer to go with their 'gut' based on their {F}eelings?

Fourth (and final) letter - are you more likely to {J}udge what you see based on what you already believe to be true, or adjust what you beleve to be true based on what you {P}erceive.

While everyone really is on a spectrum there (nobody is either extreme, but will tend to be somewhere left or right of center) each extreme type is then associated with an architype - an example to let you visualize that personality type.

So INTJ (Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Judging), Twilight in the list above, is related to the "mastermind" architype, while ESFP (Extroverted, Sensing, Feeling, Perceiving) listed as being Shining Armour above, is associated with the "entertainer" architype

Well.. actually no.

Fluttershy is infp so4, twilight is estj sp1, rainbow dash is esfp so3, princess Luna is isfp sp4, Rarity is maybe enfj but Si function can fit her better, so she probably esfj sx3, apple bloom is not the character whos fit Ti function, so she probably just another heart triad girl

if you want to know I can explain that its just the logic of mbti functions and the theory of cognitive extra/introversion:flutter-write:

(edited)

Oh yeah, this is a fun one. Now bare with me as I try to type the Mane 6 and Spike, with explanations. Could be wrong though!

Twilight Sparkle - INFP

She is definitely an INFP, the mediator type. Introverted at heart, and loves to read. She has a strong Fi core which means she is very in tune with her internal feelings. Having Ne and Te means she is inquisitive, asks a lot of questions, and is organized. However, having Te as the inferior function means that it takes more and more time to develop as they learn and grow (makes sense when Twilight starts learning more about friendship throughout the series.) The Tertiary Si function helps recall memories, thoughts, and helps her reminisce of the the good times, which she does, occasionally. When Si is used improperly, it can be used to imagine bad things that won't happen (sound familiar)? The ego type of INFP is ENFJ, the teacher. This also goes in line with how INFP types really enjoy teaching, even if they are not naturally the greatest at it, because becoming the ego type can become exhausting over time.  Introverts like to store their energy more than anything.

Applejack - ISTJ

I wouldn't say Applejack is... the complete poster child of a typical ISTJ, but part of her can-do, no-nonsense attitude does comes from her personality here. She is definitely not a feeler, but knows how to express her emotions in a mature and kind way when she needs to. The function stack is: Si, Te, Fi, Ne. As you can see, Ne is the weakest function. A common trait of ISTJs is that they like to ask questions when things don't make sense to them, but they often rely on Si instead, which is much stronger. And that's why a lof of them adhere to tradition, and the saying, "if it isn't broke, don't fix it." The ego type of ISTJ is ESTP, the entrepreneur. You can see this ego part shine the most when she wants to try and sell stuff to make more money for her family in the Gala episode, or when she learns about the problems and fixes the pipe in the spa in Applejack's "Day" Off. I can't really think of anything else off the top of my head that would also help prove she is an ISTJ, but let me know!

Rainbow Dash - ISTP

Okay, hear me out. First of all, please don't make the mistake that Rainbow Dash is an extrovert by the way she acts. I do think she is a particular, well-balanced and healthy kind of ISTP that is an ambivert. Trust me when I say that I have met plenty of ISTPs in my lifetime from childhood to adulthood. And, I can tell you just from personal experience, I simply know how to pick apart an ISTP and an ESTP any day of the week. First of all, one key point is that the ISTP and the INFP personality types really clash with each other. Sound familiar? This is why Rainbow Dash has a harder time getting along with Twilight Sparkle initially, because their archetypes are wired so differently. On the other hand, an ESTP has no problem getting along with an INFP better, especially on a relational stance. ISTPs are sensory lovers with a thirst for internal knowledge Ti. She loves to learn all about flying, and is able to keep information in her head about things she is interested in. And because Ti is supported by Se, this makes taking in real-world information very easy. One reason why she is known for "learning things differently" is that some ISTPs (but not all!) do not like to learn things through reading. A lot of them like a hands-on approach, or just prefer to learn things their own way in general. The ego type of ISTP is ESTJ, the executive. In most of the cases, I've seen RD's ego archetype used for a lot of negative things when she tries to change the weather and stuff. Or, perhaps, this type is used for funny sabotage. But there are moments where this ego type is used for good, like when she is fighting for her friends, and trying to protect them, or take charge. This ego type, then used properly, can really help her shine. Otherwise, it can be used in a stubborn and selfish way.

Rarity - ENFP

I will admit, I have the hardest time trying to type Rarity because I don't know too many personality types like hers. Honestly, I could be completely wrong. ENFPs are actually not as overly extroverted as one might think. The function stack is: Ne, Fi, Te, Si. Having the dominant function be extroverted intuition and paired with introverted feeling is a great combination. She is in-tune with her feelings and knows how to come up with ideas for things that she thinks herself and other people will like. It's probably why she is so geared towards fashion. One thing that might make me think she is ENFP is because of the way ENFPs help support INFPs like Twilight well, even if it means sometimes it can feel like the ENFP "overpowers" the INFP's ideas at times. Another thing is how ENFPs relate to ISTJs like Applejack. If she was an INFP or an INFJ, then I'm sure she would get along much better with Applejack. But check this out. Look at both function stacks:

ISTJ function stack is: Si, Te, Fi, Ne

ENFP function stack is: Ne, Fi, Te, Si

This is no coincidence. This is how MBTI works. You can see they are completely reversed! While ENFPs are used to coming up with new ideas, ISTJs hate trying new things that they are not used to, and prefer to use Si. Whereas, for an ENFP, traditions seems stifling, boring and not very creative. Makes sense when Rarity did not want to use Sweetie Belle's "traditional" idea in that one episode in season six.

The ego type of ENFP is INFJ, the idealist (or advocate). And, say it with me, INFJ is one of the rarest personality types. Yes, it's true! I also think she is an ENFP by the way that Spike relates to her. And, yes, I will get into that later when I type Spike's personality. Characteristics of an INFJ ego is being able to help or advocate for others when they need it. INFJ ego can be used in nasty ways if used negatively.

Pinkie Pie - ESFP

I will say that in a lot of cartoon shows, ESFPs are often overly exaggerated, and maybe even used as comic relief characters. However, I think in this show, they did a really great job in portraying all of the nuances of an ESFP as well, especially once she started to compete with Cheese Sandwich. We got the first glimpse of her really being sad and upset, along with, well... her psychological trauma she had when she was trying to replace her friends with piles of rocks!

Uh, anyway... ESFPs are outgoing, like to perform for others, and they are also deceptively very smart, too. Their function stack is: Se, Fi, Te, Ni. These are the same functions shared by the INTJ, ENTJ, and ISFP. All four of these personality types are more down to earth than people realize... usually! The ego type for ESFP is ISFJ, the defender. She knows when to look out for her friends. This type comes out the most when she is trying to help defend Fluttershy, usually from pranks or bad mishaps, like in the first episode with Gilda.

Fluttershy - ISFP

Alright, here we have the ISFP, the adventurer. This is probably one of the most common personality types in the world along with ISTPs, ISFJs and ISTJs. But I suppose there is a great reason for that. ISFPs are usually very nice, kind, very down to earth, easy to make fun of, and always remind me of my mother!--Heheh-heh, just kidding! Now, just because people call it "the adventurer" doesn't always mean they want to go on every single adventure. It just means they prefer to take the adventures of life! Staying open-minded and "marching to the beat of their own drum" are two of the best ways I can describe ISFPs. They go wherever life takes them, and I think that is a truly amazing thing to be able to naturally do for themselves. What else can I say about ISFPs? You know them, you love them. They're great. The ego type of ISFP is ESFJ, the consul. So, I will admit, just like ENFPs, I don't know all of the particular inner-workings of an ESFJ that well, but I know they share a lot of similarities to ENFJs, but with some key differences. ESFJs like to help people, but they stick to what they know works. I would say Fluttershy's ESFJ ego comes out when she is using "The Stare" or something like that. Maybe there could be more examples. Feel free to add.

Spike - INTP (Or possibly INTJ)

Oooh, now we get to my favorite personality type, and why I just love Spike so much! He's an INTP, just like me! Now, uh... a lot of times, INTPs are one of the most heavily mistyped personalities out there. I've talked to plenty of INTJs before Online, and I really don't think Spike is INTJ. INTJs just act different. However, I am not sure how an INTJ acts during childhood is the thing. I know how INTJs act like as adults, but I'm not sure about it. Since Spike is a child, that means the rest of the functions are not fully matured, yet.

Here might be some signs that Spike is INTP:

- INTPs help support INFPs in a similar way ISTPs help support ISFPs.

So, listen. Here's another thing that I know about MBTI, all thinking and feeling functions (Fe, Fi, Te, Ti) are called "judging functions". They help people make choices, hence why they are called that way. The difference is how they are directed. Introverted functions are directed inward (not openly expressed), whereas extroverted functions are usually expressed. The sensory and intuition functions (Se, Si, Ne, Ni) are all "perception functions". Makes sense? Here's why this is so important to understand.

Since an INFP like Twilight uses Fi, Ne as the first two functions, whereas an INTP uses Ti, Ne first. Both of them use Ne to express what ideas they are thinking, but having a strong Ti core means the Ne expression is more rounded towards internal thoughts, rather than internal feelings. This could also mean INTPs and INFPs can have difficulty understanding where they are both coming from, but since Ne is shared easily, just like Se, these perception functions are easily understood from a core value. Let's also pair together Fluttershy (ISFP) with Rainbow Dash (ISTP). These are two extremely common pairings. Rainbow Dash usually complains about Fluttershy's slowness, timidness, and such, but is often there to help support her reasoning whenever Fluttershy is wrong about something. Because of the similar ways that RD and Fluttershy support each other in their friendship and keep each other in check, I think Spike and Twilight Sparkle do the same thing, just in a slightly different way, since they all actually have different personalities.

- INTPs (and INTJs) are naturally attracted to ENFPs

Something about how the ENFP (like Rarity) portrays themselves is attractive to INTPs. Maybe just because they seem smart, good-looking, or just some loveliness about their personality. I'm not sure! But I do know that these two personality types are made for each other. It can't just be a coincidence! Just look at how well Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash get along once they start trusting each other, and learning how to accept their differences. They even do fun things together!

- INTPs (and INTJs) get along well with ISTPs like Rainbow Dash

So, I keep bringing up that Spike could also be an INTJ, but I am not 100% sure. It's only because, like I said... in childhood, only the first two functions are mostly developed. In this case, it would either be Ti, Ne or Ni, Te. But the rest of the functions, the tertiary and inferior functions are not well developed until adulthood. Children are always harder to type than grown-ups. That's true almost all the time. But Spike does get along with Rainbow Dash in terms of the way she handles logic. I mean, heck, INTPs can even naturally get along well with ISTJs like Applejack most of the time. INTPs (and INTJs) struggle with getting along with more of the irrational personalities or just touchy-feely things, which is why Spike usually gets afraid--or just unwilling--to want to interact with some ponies sometimes.

The ego type of INTP is ENTJ, the commander. This trait comes out the most clearly in the episode where Spike wants to take charge and tell people in the Canterlot what to do so Twilight can get some sleep in her bedroom in one of the castle towers. Sorry, I can never remember the names of these episodes!

---

Whew, okay. That's about it. What do you all think? Am I on the nose, or a bit off?

Oh, and just to clarify since I couldn't remember the exact name of it, when I say "ego type", I am really referring to something called the "shadow type". You can look that up if you want to.
