As far as species in Equestria go, they're rather unique, and have largely been forgotten about since they only made one appearance, as have Bat Ponies. With the reformation of the changeling, any creatures that can be seen as permanently scary or whatever aren't exactly welcome in the series. An argument can be made for all of the lizard/fish people from the movie, and perhaps Goblins could be lumped in with them, but they also appear to be excluded from regular life.
