"Different" entries in a series.

I've been playing Pokemon Black, and it's different from the previous Pokemon games I've played.

This made me think, what are some other entries in a series where the people who worked on it tried something new instead of just making another standard entry? I'm talking about mainline entries, not spin-offs. Otherwise, this topic would go on forever.

Star Fox Adventures is one of my favorite entries in the series despite it being completely different(an adventure game in a series of space combat) and I really wish they'd at least try something similar to that in the future, especially after the monotony of back to back SF64 remakes. I'd love to see something expanded on Adventures but more focused on space-faring and exploring the other planets

Conversely, Mega Man X7 is probably the worst game in the entire series and that was a game that tried to make the shift to 3D and just does everything badly. Game controls badly, the 3D is implemented poorly and the targeting system is terrible. The fact that Mega Man Legends predates it only makes this worse, while yes it's fundamentally different from regular Mega Man games it's proof that the series can work in 3D and X could probably try to fit that formula with some adjustments. Funnily enough, Command Mission came out a year later and was still a much better game despite being a completely different genre

Does our old timer MLP count?

I think G4 feels a lot different from G1, and G1 tells several story arcs throughout several episodes, while G4 only does it in two parter in season beginning and finale.

The Halo games is definitely one from them because of how they change there multiplayer. Where when you are playing Halo 4 all the way through Infinite the multiplayer is so fast pace and everyone is in a rushing to get the powerful weapons or vehicles. Where in Halo and all the way through Reach things are slow down where yes you are still rushing to get those powerful weapons/vehicles but things back then just feel slow in a good way, Its hard to explain but its where the new Halo games got to be so fast and everyone is in a rush to win the game where in the old Halo games you kind of take in the moments since you are enjoying the fun of it.

Fallout 3 was a pretty big departure from the first 2 games in the series. Entire new region, east coast instead of west coast. Going from isometric CRPGs to an open world FPS with RPG elements. Maintained the same lore for the most part though.

Zelda BOTW was a huge departure from the usual Zelda games in a very good way imo.

Don't care what anyone else says, Zelda II is a fantastic departure from the rest of the series. Final Fantasy II is another insanely underrated gem of a departure from the rest of the series, and FFVIII and FFX are also stellar despite feeling different from the rest of the franchise. However, I think the best examples of good series departures are easily Resident Evil 4 and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. There's a reason why "every RE game had to be like 4" and "every Castlevania game had to be like SOTN" ever since those games were released.

If we doing movies and TV shows too

Since the 30th anniversary of the show is approaching it's a good excuse for me to gush about G Gundam. G Gundam is a ridiculous show that strays far from what the Gundam series was known for at the time, instead of a science fiction war drama focused on mecha, to basically a shonen anime that's a lot more over the top and goofy, some people going as far as to call it "Gundam Ball Z" which honestly isn't off the mark. It's full of stereotypes of different countries, with some of the best and some of the most bizarre Gundam designs out there.

It's also one of the best Gundam series that's earnest with how over the top it is and is still full of heart
Heads up; GIF and video overload

Honestly, I would love to see them give this game another shot with a remake. If they added some QoL improvements and perhaps an easier difficulty, I think a lot of people would enjoy it.

At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do.
