How's it goin' artists

I'm at an early stage in learning art where my results are sometimes alright but never as deliberate or repeatable as I hope for in the future.

I'm starting this thread for discussion, critique and guidance with hopes to improve my art skills and increase the time I commit to drawing, I could never take offence to anything constructive so please don't be afraid to offer some advice or point out some mistakes I make along the way, I only stand to benefit form the feedback

I've looked at some tutorials and such for constructing the forms of head so that I might be able to draw one from any orientation though I don't yet feel I've grasped the concept, drawing the muzzle well reliably is proving to be a really big hurdle for me, especially when getting more dynamic than a side view

I've been trying to draw at a 3/4 ish view because that's what the majority of references are and it seems relatively easy though I must say the muzzle / Jaw are still particularly tricky.

The shading is shall we say... haphazard.

Advice on ears would also be really appreciate I'm not quite sure how to connect them to the head from certain angles. :jazz-hooves-please: I guess I don't really know how they work at all.

Cheers!

Well, I don't really have anything to say, maybe that you don't need sketch base to drawing ponies, but that is mostly because I never use sketch bases, so it's your choice to use them or not. The sketch you made looks great to me, the only thing I can say maybe is, in case you want the ponies to look cuter, then I think the lower part of the muzzle needs to be round, not "square", the upper part needs to be less square as well, also, the line of the mouth shorter. But that could be because it's simply your art style ~☆

I find it very difficult at this stage to place everything without a bit of structure, I only left that visible in case someone saw perhaps a misuse/mistake worth pointing out in the process I'm currently using.

Thank you so much for the kind words it really means a lot Rafa, good point on making things rounder, I'll certainly be working towards that as I get comfortable blocking everything together with spheres/cubes/simple lines.

I'm hesitant to call anything an "art style" as all stylistic choices are just me mucking about in the hopes it'll look nice or me copying the reference material :jazz-hooves-please: I'll play the art style game when such choices are deliberately repeatable in the future, for now I gotta learn, thanks so much for the input! :party-pinkie:

@RafaStaryStory I think @Snow uses sketch base because he is playing with different angles in 3D space and that's really cool.

Thanks bro, I am indeed trying to learn how to draw these silly horses in 3D, conceptually this approach just makes sense to me, I want to take a structured/anatomical approach so i'll be able to understand and recreate these forms form any pose/angle, the bodies are a lot simpler and more forgiving but the faces are really important to making a character look right and it's my main struggle :jazz-hooves-please:

I'm putting minimal effort into the eyes, they are something I really need to sit down and learn how to draw, especially if I wanted to ever start trying to express emotions (mouth too of course) but I want to focus on the overarching head structure first.

I really appreciate the comments guys :twilightsheepish:

Ohhu now I understood, well that's really complex working, not even me thinks much about 3D angles, at this point I really can't provide any help anymore, so all I can do now is wish you good luck. Give your best in your trainings and become the awesome artist you want to be :squee: ~☆
