Phaeston-e12 173 June 26, 2012 Share June 26, 2012 Hello, new to the forum here. I've started this around 2am last night and finished it around 8pm; considering that I slept for 5~6 hours inbetween and screwed around for possibly 2~3 hours; this was a major test in patience. Turns out that my patience got the best of me since I've just decided to rehash a very tiny collection of cloud vectors I've used some time ago and decided to omit couple of her objects that actually was supposed to be there. I do not like how this picture turned out; I'm going to spend some time studying over how artists in MLP series do the close-up background portion by taking more references so I can get something out of it. Perhaps it was my fatigue but I've ran amock with those rocks and it just has way too much detail for how the series generally treats the background; I want to be faithful to the original art-style of the series while providing my own two-cents. I suppose you learn few everytime you do something. This was done as part of my tackling schematic to deal with much larger background picture I've been working on for some time. The black/white underdrawing is what I've used as a baseline for this; I only do tracing to learn proportions and features about certain characters but I try to do everything from scratch when I'm doing something original. http://einsicht12.deviantart.com/

Phaeston-e12 173 June 26, 2012 Author Share June 26, 2012 (edited) Thank you, still there are things on this picture that makes me cringe badly. Add: Huh, that's strange; I never noticed an odd positioning of the eye reflections. I'm going to have to fix that later; I wonder if moving the eye around just to figure out a perfect placement have caused it. Silverwisp the Bard 2,353 June 26, 2012 Share June 26, 2012 Wow just wow... The white in the wing does not fill out the wing completely and the wrinkle above the eye needs to be put behind the wimpers Care to post a short bio? My Art Thread, updated (almost) daily Tomorrow will take us away, far from home No one will ever know our names But the bard songs will remain. Phaeston-e12 173 June 26, 2012 Author Share June 26, 2012 (edited) You are right on the wrinkle, but that's just how her wings look like; she has a darkblue/silver end on her wingtip feathers. This is my current work-in-progress, I've been stuck with this one since I have a plan to use her in a large background; possibly looking down from a very high altitude on a grassy plane with some clouds and canyons. But least on this picture one you can see her color schematics. She's supposed to be incredibly pale compared to ponies in MLP series. Edit: This is supposed to be a very younger version of her. And no, her hair does not defy gravity unlike two certain alicorns in the original series. Edited June 26, 2012 by ein12
FortyShadows 217 June 26, 2012 Share June 26, 2012 Cringe? I see NOTHING wrong. Maybe it's just me. So did you use a pencil drawing first, scan it, and then trace over in a program and colour?
Phaeston-e12 173 June 26, 2012 Author Share June 26, 2012 (edited) No, I do everything from scratch in the photoshop; I use charcoal large smear 4~6pt brush for conceptual underdrawing then use hard round brush to do fine detail stuffs. Charcoal brush is nice because it lets me bypass my perfectionist tendency so I can focus on getting the basics right; dynamic force, directions, proportions etc. I have got to learn illustrator though; it takes such an ungodly amount of time to do these just by using the pen tool. Edit: Oh god, I just found another minor thing that makes me cringe. Edited June 26, 2012 by ein12
Ezynell 2,037 June 26, 2012 Share June 26, 2012 I really like it. The pony is not completely outlandish and looks like it could be from the show. Aside from that, the pose combined with the scenery makes for a majestic shot. GAK
Phaeston-e12 173 June 27, 2012 Author Share June 27, 2012 (edited) Thank you, not sure about majestic; this picture made me realize that I need to do something about her eyes (the intention is fairly on target but something still feels off) and just need to do more background practice. I realized I don't really know how to the unicorn magic effect properly. I will try figuring that out later on, but this is going to be the last practice picture I'm doing before I move to Tucson, AZ from Champaign, IL. "Huh... someone must be stealing off my 'medicine', it's gone already." I'm not trying to promote.. a habit of drinking; she has that thing for a reason and it just popped into my mind. And yes, she's old; for a lore-reason. Since one of the person asked for her biography, I will just reveal little bit about her. Main reason is because I'm trying to figure out what to do with this character, I've made her as part of my character development experiment and because of that there's quite a huge story involved with her; I would rather withhold some of her information for that reason. Name: Silvermist Age: Old Personality: Eccentric, calm, perfectionist, often-lost-in-thought, pragmatic Special Mention: Suffers from a physical disability Edited June 27, 2012 by ein12
