How you became a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Let's see...I watched a Smosh video (yes, i'm a Smosh fan, please don't judge me!) called "Smosh Reacts to Kids React to Smosh!" and saw a link on the side bar called "Teens React to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" and decided to see what it was all about. I thought their reactions to the Bronys were kind of sad, later on I was intrigued by the Brony thing and decided to see what the show was all about and why did it attract such a large male audience. Now i'm in love with this wonderful show!

Nice to meet you! I'm not sure if the definition of Brony is only for men, but I hope you don't mind i'm female! Like many of you, I was curious and now i'm in love with this show!!! It has that wonderful vibe that the old classic toons I used to watch when I was younger had. I think the fandom around this show is just wonderful, and I am fully supportive of Bronys (bronies?). Breaking social expectations is challenging, but important! We should be able to live our dreams and do what makes us happy without peoples expectations of us stopping us, am I right?

 

Something that saddens me is that there are no plans yet to release this show in Japan, according to Wikipedia. There isn't even a Wikipedia page for this show in Japanese. I think Japan needs this show, judging by some of the newer kids anime i've seen. I think MLPFIM would be really well liked in Japan. Well, for the appearance of the ponies at least (they sure do love cute stuff here), but the key will be solid translations so it's not just watching cute ponies, but also getting the jokes and meaningfulness of the show. I'm sure most people know translations between Japanese and English are rarely well done. *sigh*

 

I need to search YouTube a little more to be sure it hasn't been done so I don't rain on someone elses parade, but I can't find anyone attempting serious fan subs/dubs to catch the attention of people in Japan surfing YouTube. I don't think I can't help with either, but I am studying Japanese (beginner) and I have been thinking about at least trying to make subs with my husband. He's a native Japanese speaker, so maybe we can teamwork it? I would really love to get people in Japan watching this fantastic show, and that way I can show my Japanese friends (and my husband of course) this wonderful show without having to constantly explain things. It also might be a wonderful experience to boost my Japanese study, I learn best by using the language as much as possible. It certainly wouldn't be professional translating, but I would put a lot of work into trying to convey everything correctly.

 

I'm also feeling a little ambition to do covers of the songs from the show on my Shamisen, but that'll take a lot of time. I am a beginner with Shamisen too, but I played Viola for several years so we'll see how long it takes to switch to the Shamisen and translate the songs to Shamisen notation. If I can ever do it, i'll gladly share. Wouldn't it be interested to hear the theme song and winter wrap up on a Shamisen?

That sounds like a great idea! Of course, you might be familiar with

, but she seems to be only posting clips and songs so I don't think that counts in your definition of 'serious'. If you can get a sub (or heck, even a dub!) going, that'd be fantastic!

 

And yeah, I think I know what you mean regarding translations. I think a good example of what you might want to achive is the Asterix comic translations, which is well known for its woolseyisms.

 

My only regret would be not being able to understand them!* I did take a Japanese class for two years in high school, so I can understand some basic stuff (Are wa nan desuka? Kore wa majutsu no hon desu!) and I can still recognise hiragana and most katakana, but a lot of the words I can't remember, and even then I had trouble memorising nouns and adjectives (the structures themselves were easy, though I've forgotten most of them now.)

 

Someday, I tell myself, I'll take out my notebooks and at least get some basics down, but I think much of my problem was a lack of reinforcement and I'm not sure I won't run into the same problems.

Anyway!

 

As far as I can tell, most people seem to be of the opinion that 'bronies' is a genderless term, much like 'guys' is nowadays.

 

And I'd love to hear some shamisen covers! It's got quite a unique sound, or at least I think so, so that'd be fantastic to hear, methinks.

Welcome to the herd, fellow brony!

 

I agree, I think Japanese kids would love to watch MLP: FIM. I have wtched a few episodes of Chi's Sweet Home (it's so adorable!) and I think MLP would fit in well.

 

Anyways, we always love and tolerate, so I'm sure you'll make lots of brony friends! Also, the forum is pretty active too, so there's always something to talk about! Everypony here is very friendly, and you couldn't ask for a better pony forum!I see your already a muffin, so I'm sure you already know about the forums. Well, I hope your enjoying it!

Oh dear, I hadn't come across Ogatamon's YouTube Channel...she is very talented!

I don't think I could do the songs as well as she can, nor a decent dub for that matter. Maybe I should give up on the idea -_-

 

I also feel I should be farther along in my Japanese study first, I would feel terrible to take credit when it would mostly be my husbands translations from my explination what the characters are saying. Of course I would do as much as I know on my own, but maybe it's way beyond my abilities at the moment.

 

But maybe I can still try the Shamisen idea, not many people play Shamisen, maybe I will be the first to Shamisen the pony songs.
