private Surrogate Sisters

Scoots squealed in delight as she felt the same sensation she felt when she first soared on Rainbow's back.It never gets old. The intense winds at high speed hurt her eyes to open, so she squinted to gain some sign of vision. Even though she wasn't the one flying, she felt adrenaline rush throughout her body. The orange filly's throat swelled up with a scream, which was then released into the early morning sky that Celestia has raised. Keeping her hooves tight around Rainbow's neck, Scoots looked down to find herself hundreds of feet in the air. She had never been this high.

While the heights made her slightly nervous, she didn't care that much.

She had a sister to catch her if she fell.

Phew. She didn't know why, but it felt good to take to the sky again after such an eventful morning. Well, in the end, Twilight and Applejack pulled through like she knew they would. And even though she was a little afraid to try and care for a filly, deep down, Dash knew she knew it was the right thing to do. The kid was loud and rambunctious like her, she was a pegasus like her and she practically idolized Dash to begin with. Dash's lip curved at the thought of the squirt being stuck in some snobby orphanage, with ponies taking care of her out of pity, and not genuinely. Ugh, she knew she'd hate that, so the kid probably would, too.

''So, what is it you're gonna drag me to do today, kid?" Dash asked, smirking and cocking an eyebrow. "Anything in particular you want to do while we're up in the air? Otherwise I'm just gonna go around for a bit."

(After our Cloudsdale idea, they could go on a cloud later on, because Scoots wants to know what it's like. Dash says they can take a nap on it =3)

"Can we go flying some more? At your fastest speed? Come on, can we?" the little filly asked excitedly, barely containing herself. After flying like that with Rainbow Dash, she just wanted to do it more. And more. And even more.

The cyan pegasus nodded her head, and sped off. Again, Scoots felt that same rush and adrenaline she had felt a few moments ago. Though, she always wondered about one certain subject that she had seen other pegasi do.

"Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaassshhhhhhhhh!" she yelled into the air, trying to make her words clear over the intensive wind. It appeared to be successful, as the weather pony stopped and looked at her.

"What does it feel like to fly through a cloud? Can we do it? Please?"

Fluttering in mid-air, wings flapping, the blue pony blinked a few times and chuckled. There was nothing too exciting about flying into clouds, but if that's what the kid wanted, then alright. Dash took a sudden nosedive and flew down through the sky, the wind flying into both of the pegasi's faces and causing their manes to flair uncontrollably. Before long, a particular cloud that sat a few hundred feet above a home near Sugarcube Corner became larger and larger as they neared it.

All at once, Dash shouted a 'WOOHOO!' for extra effect, while the cloud exploded into nothingness when her winged body shot through it. After she got through, the blue pony gradually slowed down.

"There ya go, not too interesting, really. But...maybe that's cause' I do it every day." Dash said with a rub of her head.

"Not too interesting? That was rad!" Scoots yelled, still having that spontaneous energy. The way the cloud exploded in a big puff and the feeling of the water droplets on her face was just too awesome. "Geez, there's so much to do... We could go flying real fast again... Or maybe do flips and tricks! That would be cool... Though, I've only been on a cloud once, and that was only for a few minutes at Rainbow's house..."

The little filly finally made up her mind.

"Hey, Dash, can we go stand on a cloud again?" she said, grinning widely.

The weather pony's attention was distracted and frazzled. Whilst the tiny filly talked excitedly from behind, the blue pony's eyes were caught on all the bustling of ponies down below. With an ear twitch she regained her composure and turned to look around the sky for another cloud. Spotting a reasonably soft one that could fit a dozen or so ponies, the two pegasi headed over to it.

"Standing? Seems kinda pointless, kid." The mare said matter-of-factly. She landed on the cloud on all fours, then let the kid climb off her back. Dash then stretched her body out like a cat would, flank high in the air, head low to the ground. She sighed in relief and flopped onto her side. "A nap on the other hand, is what clouds are best used for."

The cloud seemed to sigh as an orange filly plopped down onto it. She forgot for a minute that clouds were made out of water as she landed and was surprised by the cooler temperatures of the soft material beneath her. "Hehehe," she giggled, bouncing and rolling the same way she did at her now-sister's mansion. It felt sort of like a trampoline, yet soft and comfortable to lay on.

The crusader's ears perked up at the sound of this remark from Dash. Naps? How could you take a nap at this time?

"I'm too awake to sleep!" Scoots said, attempting to lie down on the cloud to prove her point. However, as she hit the soft surface of the cloud, she felt instantly relaxed. This was the most comfortable furniture, or whatever it was, she had ever slept on. "Ahhhh..." she sighed, rolling on her side next to Rainbow. The weather pony was right. This was comfortable.

"I think you make a fair point..." the little filly said, trying to sound official for some odd reason. She slowly closed her eyes, the relaxing texture of the clouds soothing her.

Stretching her hooves again, the exposed pegasus sighed in relief as she got comfortable against the puffy white material. Now she could relax for a bit. Relax, and just veg out there in the sky, not thinking about the almost overwhelming amount of responsibility she knew she had taken on. After a few moment of near silence, with no sounds other than Scootaloo rummaging around on the cloud, she felt the cloud stop moving her own blue body, and knew Scoots had finally laid down as well.

"Told ya," Dash giggled. "If I can't resist clouds then there's no way a filly can."

Just as she began to settle in and surrender herself to the incoming sleep, Dash felt Scootaloo move a little once again. A thought entered the weather pony's mind, and she clenched her eyes, predicting an uncertain 'umm...' or a poke of her hoof against Dash's side. She wasn't gonna try to make her get all sappy again, was she?

The orange filly almost forgot about all things else surrounding her until Dash made that statement. Scoots suddenly felt dissatisfied with her position on the plush clouds, despite their comfort. She got up from her few seconds of relaxation and searched the premises for a place to lay down.

Like last night, a certain position caught her eye.

A certain cyan pegasus was leaning against a lump on the cloud like she would lean against a tree, right leg up and her two front hooves behind her head. That one spot on her belly between her head and her legs sure looked soothing to the crusader.

However, certain thoughts passed through her mind. Isn't Dash the non sappy type? And wasn't herself too? Though, she did love Rainbow in a certain way, whether it be the athlete's awesomeness or just the plain idea that they were now surgery sisters. Scoots bit her lip, like she often does when she's nervous. She could only hope this would work out.

Half trotting, half bouncing over to Dash, the crusader gave an all too predictable poke and looked at the rainbow maned pony in nervous anticipation.

(Continuing to use the term 'Surgery Sisters' is a clever on-going gag btw x3)

Dash gave a large time lapse before she finally knew the kid was waiting for a verbal allowance. Sighing again, she stretched her lower hooves and smiled softly. Well, she may as well suck it up now, huh? If the squirt was gonna be sticking around with her, and if she herself was going to be any kind of respectable sister compared to Applejack, or even Rarity, she might as well give it a go. Hopefully the kid didn't start expecting it all the time though...

"Alright kid, hop up, if that's what you're waiting for." The rainbow pony said in a tone of casual defeat. "I shoulda known from the moment I mentioned a nap, I guess."

While Dash watched the small orange pony's large eyes light up with happiness, and her pearly whites gleam, she couldn't help but ponder how AJ could even take care of a loud, hyperactive filly all day. Scootaloo jumped up into the air and belly flopped the older ponies' own belly, then giggled when Dash began prodding her head. Her train of thought continued. It wasn't like Applejack could even devote all her time to Apple Bloom either...yeah she had Big Mac and the Granny, but Mac hardly talked and Granny Smith was aloof half the time.

What made her such a good sister?...

"Oof!" Rainbow muttered, feeling Scootaloo's hooves step around her underbelly. She cocked an eyebrow. "You done yet? You're like a freakin' cat kneading a blanket, kid."

The orange filly looked back at Rainbow's remark and blushed, smiling sheepishly. She may have overdone it just a teensy weensy bit. "Oh, uh... yeah, haha..." she said nervously, breaking eye contact with the rainbow maned pegasus. Scoots fidgeted just a bit more before noticing Rainbow's big eyes staring at her with a face of half amusement and half wonder.

The crusader smiled, placing both her front hooves on Rainbow's chest and looking straight into the magenta eyes. She couldn't keep her stare like originally intended for long, and started giggling, and buried her face in the Dash's chest in laughter.

"Man you're hyper." The blue pony chuckled, using her lower hooves to push on the cloud, puffy it out a bit further, trying to increase it's comfort as a bed. Finally, Scootaloo's laughing and moving slowed down, and sleep started to robe at her mind. It was starting to probe at Dash's as well. Though the day still loomed overhead, fatigue wrapped any pegasus who laid on a cloud long enough.

But puffy white clouds were not scheduled for, today. In fact, just as Scootaloo and Dash fell asleep with one another, the sounds of a weather pony leading his team in to setup the foundation clouds for today's weather forecast rang through the air. Soon, a dozen pegasi ponies were far overhead, placing dark clouds in tufts, and forming them into one, gigantic cloud that overhung all of Ponyville. Raindrops began to fall before the monstrous cloud was even finished, and the weather ponies, as well as all ponies down in the streets below, sped up their pace to get under the cover of the shops and homes that surrounded the road.

All ponies except two were out of reach for the inbound thunderstorm.

The wind started to pick up and the darkness creeped in as the dark clouds blotted out any remaining light besides the street lights of Ponyville. Two pegasi, however, napped in oblivious peace on the only white cloud remaining in the sky. However, things have changed.

Scoots slowly opened her eyes, not noticing the rain and darkness around her for a few moments. She arose and looked groggily around, still trying to decide whether she was really awake. When sense gave the crusader a slap in the face, her purple eyes widened. Had she really slept all the way till night? And why was it raining? She was facing Dash, who was contently snoozing. This was most definitely striking the filly in an odd spot. And she didn't like it.

Rainbow seemed a bit far away, but Scoots didn't notice it with the grogginess and sleep in her eyes. However, during her sleep, thr little filly had fidgeted a few feet away from the weather pony. As she walked the other way, she immediately stopped.

She looked down at her height. Though she is a pegasi, she has never been this high without the company of the one and only Dash. Her stomach twisted in a knot, and she attempted walking over to Dash. Turning around, the orange crusader said,

"Uhhh, Da-"

Suddenly, a lightning bolt was released from the sky only meters away from their cloud, causing a boom louder than a Sonic Rainboom. Scootaloo yelped, and jumped at this sound. Losing her balance, the orange filly tripped over the side of the plush cloud and plummeted to the ground. Screaming, she attempted to flap her wings in desparation, but in vain. Her backside faced the ground, obscuring her vision of the earth below her.

"RAAINBO-"

Scootaloo's vision went red as she slammed, from a few yards, up onto a rough tree branch about a foot in diameter. She felt a slight crack in her left wing. Losing her wind, she slowly started to slide off the the slippery trunk.

"Hnn, what the-" Dash began, head shooting up before her voice was lost completely. Her mind groggy, it took her a few seconds to realize that there was a voice screaming out behind her. She turned and stood up abruptly, first noticing that the kid was gone. Oh god. She peered over the side, trying to find her through the darkening air. With a lightning strike temporarily acting as a surrogate sun, the blue pony got a clear view of the ground below, and it made her heart sink. The filly was hurtling down to the hard ground below, flailing in an attempt to grab onto something, or to stop herself.

"HANG ON!" Dash bellowed, ears and wings perking out so fast that they made a shrill swooshing sound. Not even wasting the second it would take to leap off the cloud, the pony tore right down through it, zipping down through the air like a deadly arrow, hot in pursuit of the falling pony. Biting her lip, unable to enjoy the adrenaline pulsing through her body in her deadly dive, the weather pony stretched out her front hooves in an attempt to catch her.

She got so close, too.

Before Dash could cover the last few feet to grasp the filly, Scootaloo had hit the hard, cold bark of the tree with a sound that would haunt Dash for a very, very long time. But she couldn't stop. Her own faltering to stare in shock and horror would only hurt the filly more. Quick as a whip, the blue pony shot between the remaining branches. Just as Scootaloo was about to strike another branch on her way down the tree, Dash dove beneath her, and shattered the branch to splinters and dust with her lower hooves. Only then did she finally obtain the room to narrow the final few feet, and catch the pony in her front hooves.

There was another lightning strike. The flash illuminated the two pegasi in two dark silhouettes; one being held in the front hooves of the larger one as she fluttered there in the air upright. Her adrenaline still coursing through her, knowing there was no time to think, the blue pony thundered across the sky at a speed nearly reaching rainboom status. Her sights locked on the Ponyville hospital.

(Can skip ahead to Scootaloo waking up in a hospital bed all bandaged. She's gonna hear Rainbow Dash outside the room, completely and irrationally exploding on the doctors and nurses in her own anger at herself)

"Hnngghahhh..."

A certain orange pegasus slowly fluttered her eyes as she regained her senses. She felt the comfort of the feathered pillows and soft mattress beneath her, topped off with a thin sheet of blankets. Her vision was still a bit blurry as she found herself next to some curtains, and in a hospital gown.

"What?" Scootaloo asked, however, rhetorical, as she was in this plain room alone. "Hello?" she muttered, taking a bit of effort within her groggy state to speak.

The crusader arched her back and peeked over her side to see her left wing bandaged up in the classic white wrap. She attempted to flutter it, however, it was too cased up to do anything with it. All she could remember was falling off something, a cracking noise, and that was it... She must have lost her consciousness afterwards...

"What's going on he-"

Her questions were stopped short by a series of shouts and groans of fury from the hall outside. Though muffled, Scoots could make out that this pony was downright furious. The orange filly ruffled her own mane, blinked twice, and reclined onto the pillow, listening attentively.

"Whaddya mean you aren't sure of her wings' condition!? How can you not be sure!?" Thundered the muffled voice of a familiar pony from the hallway outside. Her voice was a bit deeper than most mares, and possessed an attitude that almost made her sound like a colt to the untrained ear. Next to her own was the sound of a truly deep colt, trying to reassure the ballistic pegasus.

"I assure you miss Dash, we've taken all the immediate precautions; bandages, the offering of a pain killer, if she had needed one, and a bed. We've done some initial scans but we cannot be sure of her wing's healing capability until we make a more thorough X-ray-"

"Then stop jabbering and go DO IT!"

The silence of the room Scootaloo was in seemed to be shielded by the closed doors. And to accompany the muffled voices were the haunting silhouettes of the ponies' upper bodies, outside the door's fogged glass window. Back and forth the shadows went, playing along with the voices like puppets in a puppet show, except far more fierce. At some points it appears as if the mare would jump the doctor at any moment, from how angry she sounded.

"Rainbow Dash, that's enough! This is a hospital, and Scootaloo may still be trying to sleep." Came a third voice. It came from another mare, and Scootaloo could identify it as Twilight Sparkle. All the voices fell into hisses and whispers that Scootaloo could no longer make out. But the sound of a door softly opening, and light flooding into the opening of the darkened room was more than enough to compensate for the lack of audibility. In walked Twilight, Dash, and a middle-aged colt doctor with a clipboard hovering next to his head via magic. Twilight approached Scootaloo's bed and smiled, while Dash remained in the background, slumped, still and avoiding eye contact.

"Well, I'm surprised to see you awake," Twilight giggled. "You must recover from things quickly, just like Rainbow."

The little pegasus couldn't relax with the ruckus that was being played out in the halls. She furrowed her eyebrows, sat up, and groaned in slight frustration. What in Celestia's name is happening out there? The shouting endured on, followed by the matured voices of the doctors trying to calm a raging storm of a pony. "Now who is that?!" was all Scoots thought until she heard the click and creek of the door opening.

Standing there, alongside Rainbow Dash and an older looking pony, was a familiar purple unicorn.

The orange filly changed the arch in her back into 180 degrees, and gave Twilight a pair of confounded eyes. Scoots glanced at Dash to see her almost trying to hide from her. "What in the world is going on?" At the sound of Twi's questions, Scootaloo let it loose,

"Uh, thanks. But why am I here? What happened? Why is my wing bandaged? Will it be okay? Where am I?"

"You fell off a cloud, and hit a tree," Twilight explained, standing by the bed and smiling casually at the small orange pegasus. Following her statement, the doctor pony emerged from next to her, and looked over his charts.

"Your injuries overall were minor, apart from your wing." He explained. "We're going to need to take some more X-rays to try and see how extensive the damage is, and if your bones will need any assistance in healing, past the casts and bandages we can offer to immobilize it."

The doctor then turned, nodded to the purple and blue ponies left in the room, and then muttered something to Rainbow Dash on the way out. It was relating to the fact he would personally see to it that Scootaloo's X-ray would happy post-haste. Rainbow nodded, though her expression remained a deeply depressed one. When the doctor left the room, Twilight gave Rainbow a knowing a stare, until the pegasus finally worked up the nerve to pick her head up.

"Umm...S-Scoots..." Dash began, her voice clearly shaken and lacking in her usual projection. She walked closer to the bed. "I...I'm sorry. I couldn't...I...I couldn't, uhh..." Her voice trailed off.

Slight memories started to flush into the filly's brain as Twilight explained the situation. She could barely even remember the last few seconds of the incident, let alone the whole thing. As the doctor left, the crusader relaxed in her pillow, but noticed something strange. Glancing over at Dash, Scootaloo could only lay their, immobilized in her taken aback state. The orange filly had never seen her idol in such an emotional change. Usually, the high and mighty pegasus was flaunting her own ego and never serious, but now, there seemed to be a drop to hell in her attitude. What was she apologizing for? Did she-

"Oh."

As the last few moments of the accident traveled into Scootaloo's pockets of memory, she could vaguely see the vision of her falling from the edge of the cloud, and a flash of rainbow and cyan above her...And that's all she remembered, except... she remembered waking up on the edge of something...

Dash must be trying to apologize for not catching her?

"Oh, it's fine, really, I mean, I must have somehow went to the edge of the cloud while I was sleeping, huh? the orange pegasus reassured. She tried again to flap her left wing, however, wincing in pain and laying back down.

Dash's already fragile exterior grew more so when the orange filly's wing cause her to wince. The blue pony's voice got stuck in her throat, and she couldn't get out what she wanted to say. Her mouth was dry, and she felt completely awkward, put on the spot. But why? This wasn't such a big deal...it shouldn't be.

"No, it's not fine. Y-You were awake when you fell...and I was too late." Dash muttered, wings ruffling against her sides. Twilight came up next to her and put a hoof on her back, but Dash pushed her away.

"I can't, I just-"

"Rainbow, it's okay, no one is blaming you for what happened. You were asleep, and-"

"I should have remembered the stupid weather team was making a thunderstorm!" Dash yelled, voice cracking. "It IS my fault, and, and I'm NOT the type of pony who can take care of a kid like you and Applejack think I am!"

Twilight's ears fell as her friend yelled. "No! Rainbow, accidents happen to everyone, they happen to Applejack and myself, too-"

"NO! This shouldn't have happened in the first place! It wasn't supposed to even be an accident!" Dash growled. She scuffed the floor with her hooves, and shot her wings out. She couldn't deal with this. She needed to be alone.

Before Scootaloo or Twilight could say or do anything, the blue pony shot out the window, slamming it open hardly on her way out.
