Brony ethnography

Hi, my name is Nathan and I am working on a ethnography on brony culture for a college essay for my anthropology class.

So, I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind answering a few questions for my essay.

The main question that I want to answer is:

“Are Bronies a subculture, and if so what values, beliefs, and behaviors do they share?”

1. What are common values in the Brony community?

2. What behaviors do Bronies Share in their community?

3. What are common beliefs that Bronies share?

4. What effect does the show have on brony subculture?

Thanks, Nathan.

1. The common values... "love and Tolerate" is basically the one rule of being a brony, but I guess you could also say "Respect everyone be it opinions or life choices"

2. We all love the show My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, we take part in the community, and some make fan-art be it fan-fiction, music, or traditional drawings.

3. Again "Love and Tolerate" That is the main thing that we try to take part in, and it's also what makes us different from other fandoms.

4. The show gives the community it's base. Without the show there wouldn't be bronies, nor would there be amazing fan-art. I guess you could say the show gives us the great attitudes, and the belief "Love and Tolerate."

Some other questions that I wanted to ask are:

How diverse is the brony fandom, and what terms and phrases are unique to the brony fandom.

1.common vaules can be having a fun time hanging around other bronies, and talking about the show

2.Some bronies love to make fan art, and music that relates to the show

3. Loving, and tolerating I guess. Most bronies are trying not to over-use this term.

4.many reports on bronies in the media have a huge impact on the community.Like how fox "attacks" bronies.

How diverse is the brony fandom? Bronies dont always talk about ponies all the time.Sometime they enjoy other stuff like playing minecraft with each other, anime,ECT. We arent the biggest fandom. But we are an active fandom that does grow quickly.

The brony fandom is rather large, though we don't have an actual number, best I can bet is that there are at least 6-7 million of us world wide. Some terms I see people using are "Everypony" "Brohoof" "brony"

Yes I believe Bronies is a subculture, and we generally share the comcept of love and tolerance, and also share the interest in the show.

1. I think openmindedness is a common value, especially if you are male. Since watching MLP isn't considered a male thing to most people, it takes some thought to actually go watch the show.

2. Bronies often enjoy talking about the show, or enjoy original fanarts and music. They also try to encorporate pony culture in their lives, such as wearing an MLP themed shirt, collecting merchandise, or using terms such as 'brohoof' or 'everypony' in their texts.

3. I think a common belief is the idea of love and tolerance, however the phrase should not be overused.

4. I think the show has a positive effect, since bronies find it enjoyable and the show tries to teach good values to its audience.

Hope this helps!

I suppose it is a subculture, in a way, since it's reached further than other fandoms I know and bronies do share certain values, beliefs, choices, views etc etc.

1. The most important value would be Love and Tolerance - learning to accept different opinions, and to respect and appreciate them whenever possible, including coming from people outside the community. Also, friendship - we value friendship and our community - that is what we learn from the show. We stand up for each other, respect each other and share problems and advice to help each other.

2. We watch and discuss the show, make fanworks to show how much we love it, maybe try to bring a little ponification into our everyday lives :) One thing we all share in the community is something people don't think about aften - our differences. We all come from different areas, cultures, backgrounds, groups/fandoms etc.

3. Common beliefs... Well, again, Love and Tolerance and friendship above all. Everyone should be entitled to their opinion and be respected and accepted as a person.

4. The show gives us our base - what we draw little things like jokes and memes, OCs, fanon and all that from, and also bigger things like little life lessons we can live by

Hope this helped and good luck with your essay~!
