Exploring the depths #1 Too Many Pinkie Pies

In these little write ups Im going to briefly cover the dept of the character that is explored in the particular episode. Too Many Pinkie Pies may indeed be one of my favorite episodes for exploring Pinkies character and perhaps for exploring character in general. This episode could have easily been lost in the craziness of the situation, but it stayed focused on Pinkie's reactions for most of the time. We were with pinkie almost every step of the way. Pinkie was the one making decisions in this which is something I liked. The clones only took control away from her after she made the decision to make more.

Pinkies motivation and the difficulty of making a decision.

Pinkie is presented with a choice an the difficulty of choosing. This has been done in previous episodes with Twilight in the ticket master and Rainbow Dash in may the Best Pet Win. Each have their unique reaction to this Twilight is contemplative and slowly builds to stress and Rainbow turns it into a competition. Pinkie never really considers making a concrete decision, she instead tries to eliminate the problem of making decisions entirely. Pinkie tends to think differently than other ponies and this episode demonstrates that. It should be emphasized that there was no pressure put on pinkie to make the decision both Applejack and Rainbow Dash agreed that they were fine with whatever pinkie chose.

Pinkie's motivation is also quite clear as spending time with her friends and making them happy is her most cherished past time. Her time and memories with her friends are her most cherished things in life, the very idea that she could miss out on them is abhorrent to her.

The distinction between the clones and Pinkie herself.

The difference between Pinkie and the clones is made quite clear, in fact multiple scenes are made to illustrate that fact. This is key for exploring her character as some would tend to judge her character solely based on her general characteristics. In the first scene with her clone Pinkie actually has to calm her down, the clones make Pinkie seem tame by comparison. The Clones lack anything but the basic traits of Pinkie to the extent that they  seem to have no knowledge of any of Pinkies past. They only care about immediate gratification and having fun in the moment. Pinkie cares about maintaining a relationship and the future fun times that could be shared between her and her friends. This distinction is one of the keys to the episode, it shows you what a truly crazy solely hyperactive Pinkie would be like in contrast to the real Pinkie. The Pinkie clones dont care that they are causing chaos and misery. They revel in every minute of craziness they cause, while in contrast the real Pinkie regrets everything the Pinkie clones do and by extension her own actions that lead to it.

Pinkie's  existential crisis and depression.

In this episode we get to see what happens when Pinkie causes misery, the opposite of her main goal in life. Upon seeing the clones destroy Applejack's hard work Pinkie immediately regrets her decisions up to that point. She realizes things are out of hand but doesn't know what to do which leads to panic. This quickly turns into depression as she realizes there is no physical way to tell them apart(as well as the fact that pinkie taught them the relevant info to assume her identity). Her depression compounds upon realizing it was her actions that lead to this and as a result of those actions she may never get to spend time with her friends again.

Pinkie accepts responsibility for her actions and provides the solution.

Pinkie accepts responsibility for her actions at least two times in the episode. Pinkie also provides the solution ultimately meaning it was Pinkie herself that solved the problem she caused. One thing pinkie is certain of that she wants to be with her friends and that she will do anything to that end. Her solution draws upon the distinction between the clones established in the begging of the episode. The clones want nothing but immediate gratification whilst the real pinkie wants to spend time with her friends and maintain that relationship. Pinkie's solution is the ultimate test for herself and she passes it.

I know that Im probably missing out on some key things but that's what discussion is for. Oh and one thing that crossed my mind. The mirror pool made shallow copies of Pinkie and indeed seemed to be a shallow pool of water. I wonder if the shallow dept of personality the clones had and the implied shallow dept of the pool was intended. A week ago I would have said that was over thinking, but I said the same thing of the shooting stars.

Precisely why I liked this episode and was so shocked to see so many people rip on it. I was expecting loads of insanity and randomness out of this episode (and I certainly got it) but it was surprisingly insightful and it gave more depth to Pinkie's character. Of course I love Pinkie Pie so I'm biased. Thank you for going deeper into this one Anadu.

The amount of sanity left in the Mane 6, was well slim to none because of the over 9000 amount of Pinkie Pies in Ponyville. This episode showed how, usually you can't tell the difference between Pinkie Pie or the clones. It really amazed me how, even Rainbow Dash noticed the Pinkie Pie clones then well you know the rest. I was speechless when seeing this episode, not a bad episode at all.
