Derpi-lee? Cheeri-Derp?

So for my 2nd drawing I took a stab at some OC. I made a character for a Derpy-Obsessed Pegasister, and the color scheme kind of reminded me of cheerilee :P

Thoughts? Tips? Constructive criticism? Nasty comments that ruin the hopes and dreams of aspiring artists? Please share :D

Brohoof to all my fellow bronies :D

Edit: I fixed the eye!

NO SENSE MADE! i can seriously see derpy teaching.... something..... as long as it is not calculus, i cant really see derpy teaching math

anyone can become an artist, but a true masterpiece can only come from someone who is truly in touch with spirit and mind

Really? I can't imagine her teaching anything else. The irony of the apparently most bumbling pony teaching a high brow subject tickles me and depending on your fanon she's not really dumb, just constantly distracted and unaware of her surroundings.

A very lovely character, and you are a good artist as well. I have a few things to say though. The fact that one wing is closed while the other is open looks awkward to me. And perhaps this is just me, but the legs look too noodle-like.

^The legs seem relatively consistent with the show's art style. If the strokes were more bold they'd look better. I'm more worried about the face, mane and opened wing.

The face is OK, the shape is right, but the eyes are messy.

The mane lacks any real definition and it looks like it was drawn without any concern of depth. The same applies to the wing.

Yeah, eye's are hard :P I could fix that, actually. Should I?

And the wing was the request of the art requester :P She wanted it (being a derpy fanatic) because it gave the character and even more lopsided look.

And how can I improve on the mane?

BTW I love the input, it's very helpful :) I'm really new to this, this is only my second drawing.

It's not supposed to be a mix of the two, it happened by accident :P She wanted a magenta pony, and I like multi colored manes, so it kind of just happened :P

I think the reason the mane is throwing me off is it looks like it's a side view of a mane, not a 3/4 view of the mane.

Take a look at Rainbow Dash's hair in these two pictures:

Side

3/4

http://rainbowdash3115.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/6/7/13671325/73049_orig.png

The mane of your pony looks more like Rainbow Dash's mane of the side view than the 3/4 view, which makes it look like it's not really attached to her head.

The wing is slightly misshapen. It should have a more curved shape and it should be smaller at the base where it meets her body. It also needs some more detail, but you shouldn't worry about that until it's shaped right.

Oh I see what the problem is! the man connects with too muc space at the ear! Thanks man, I'll watch out for that next time :)

Do you draw? You seem like you know a lot about it.

Oh and I tried to fix the eye! How does it look?

I always pictured you as a cross between Demoman and Pinkie Pie for some reason.

Thank you! Someone noticed!

I love putting little things like that in drawings, just for laughs :)

And who better to get a laugh from than pinkie? :D

I can't tell if the eyes look better. Did you update the OP?

This is my art thread:

http://mlpforums.com/topic/51624-misterfanwanks-ponies/

Concerning art I consider myself a layman. Most of what I can do comes from my background as a hobbyist programmer and the general knowledge of various fields I've accumulated over the years. In particular I use vector algebra in a lot of my projects, often for inverse kinematics, so I'm well versed in geometry and basic skeletal structures. Ponies are pretty easy for me now because I spent several days documenting their basic skeletal structure and how it moved.

Yes, I trimmed a bit off of the bottom of the eye.

Dang, you're good at art!

I'm going to pretend I understood half of those terms :P

And will that really help? Maybe I should do that :P

I see it now. That does improve their shape.

Looking at them closer, I think the main problem is the eyes look like they're from a different drawing. The lines of the eyelids have a different, more bold line quality from the rest of the character, and the iris and pupil look too fuzzy, like they're scaled down from a larger picture.

The eyes are too sharp and not sharp enough for the rest of the body.

I'd say something critical about the left iris and pupil being rotated sideways, but I think that's hilarious enough to not be a problem.

I do think measuring the proportions of the ponies and understanding their skeletal structure would help you. I just don't know how to teach you how to do that. I have some references I use for the construction of the bodies, but I don't know how well other people can use them.

EDIT:

This is the reference I use for the side view of the body.

VQXLOz2.png

The head is 4mm, the chest is 2mm, and the flank is 3mm. The distance from the base of the skull to the center of the chest is 2mm. The distance from the center of the chest to the center of the flank is 4mm.

In other words the head and chest are in a 2:1 ratio and the chest and flank are in a 2:3 ratio.

This is the reference I use for the side view of the head. It has some errors, but it shows the construction, which is all it needs to do for my use.

That's probably because I used a blur tool on most of the pony, but not the eyelashes...

Should have thought of that :P

Thanks for the help :)
