Railroading in Equestria

Recommended Posts

Just putting a thought out there, I'm a Railbrony. What if we had REAL trains in Equestria, Like Norcolt Southern, or CSX (Canterlot Seaside Xtended), or We could have MN (Manehattan North.) Just throwing this all out here. It would be a good idea. I'll have to post some pictures. Of Norcolt and Western. And Manehattan Central (Parody of New York Central) Tell me what you guys think.;)

Haha, yeah, developing the background of the world would certainly be interesting.

I'm not into rails, I was at one point in life, but now I'm huge into Aerospace (rocket science), and have a very strong base of knowledge of military vehicles, so I understand how you feel when you see "generic" trains. It's annoying, lol.

Hmm. This seems like a cool idea to incorporate into the background of my fanfic. Here's my order (what trains I could use) :

1. a rail line connecting ponyville to Canterlot (we've seen that in the show :P )

2. A train line connecting Canterlot to a big trade city that's kinda like a transportation, economic hub of Equestria (I originally called it Brighton, but now I think I'll just use Manehatten. It's a major airship, rail and naval traffic hub.)

3. and from that hub to someplace like Cape Canaveral.

Hmm. I wonder what pony puns I can put into the name "Cape Canaveral"...

So what do you think of this?

So 1. would be the train we've already seen. Canterlot Seaside Xtended (Ponyville-Canterlot)

2. Manehattan North (Canterlot-Manehatten)

3. Norcolt Southern (Menehatten-Cape Canaveral, Floorida)

Well, Norcolt southern's like Norfolk Southern. So I could se it hauling freight, but I like what you did there. My Character's a engineer on a Norfolk and Western Steamer. :P I'm also into Aviation. =P ANd my FC is in the Blue Angels in Real Life. I'd like to talk to you more about it.

In the fiction I'm writing, I'm calling it the Royal Equestria Rail Company Ltd. (RER). It's not over-complicated or fancy, nor is it intended to be.

Featuring a train described to look similar to a combination of a Milwaukee-Road F7

LMS Princess Coronation

And Norfolk & Western J-class 611.

Cool concept dude xD Somewhat relevant to the topic, I noticed a while ago that the show conflicted with itself in season 1 episode 21. They used colts to pull the train, yet in season 2 the train is propelled by the locomotive. Just something that's been buggin me, I think the only explanation is a possible technological advancement between seasons. What do you guys think?

The only thing that bugs me is. That's what people think of when they think "Train" They think of a train like that.

Hmm. I'll have to wiki some research. I don't know anything about train lines, lol. So NS just hauls freight? Hah, maybe I could include your character somehow.

FC = First Cousin? :P

Lol, as you can see by my avatar, though, RD is beyond the Wonderbolts/Blue Angels xD

Though to be really honest, there are less blue angels pilots than astronauts, probably. And flying spaceships is quiet different than aircraft. I doubt a blue angels pilot could fly a spaceship, but I also doubt an astronaut could fly blue angels.

For starters, you got a lot more time to think before acting in space. You can choose to do things slowly, and they almost do always do things VERY slowly. Which I think RD would actually find boring, unless she's really into the breathtaking view.

There's a sim called Space Shuttle Simulator 2007 that pretty much has it down. Flying spaceships is mostly switch-flipping, with little actual flying. And the astronauts have "flight data sheets", which are checklists. So, as one astronaut put it, "it's like taking an open-book test."

In my fanfic, though, they don't have any computer technology, so it all has to be done by hand.

Hehe, it's boring in the sims, but when your life is actually on the line and you have to get everything perfectly right, it suddenly gets a lot less boring xD

(Which I think RD would appreciate, if she knew how IRL flying is 80% clicking buttons and flipping switches.)

I don't know how much you know about spaceflight, but it's quiet different from aviation. For one thing, an orbit is an endless freefall, so you're essentially gliding. You're gliding so fast that the ballistic curve of your path is the same as the curve of the planet you're over. Go faster, and it'll be smoother, so you'll get further from the surface. Speed is everything in space travel. Where you can go, depends on what speed you can reach. To go to the moon, for example, you need to reach about ~10,500 m/s. To be in Low Earth Orbit, you need to be going at ~7,800 m/s. Yeah, that's 5 miles per second ;)

When I first saw that, I thought the train was broken. I mean, there's an engine on it, so there's no reason they should be pulling it, either horses OR an engine. But, in this case, I'd just assume it was broken somehow...

MTA fits perfectly for Manehatten Transit authority if they had subway or El-train systems:

True that. But they could use the Dual Power GEnesis logomotives.

Thats another Interesting concept. I think that’s easier to explain than a huge advancement lol

I'll have to try that simulator. it sounds fun.

For regional areas, this is what trains look like in my area, the STL metro east. AKA, southern Illinois suburbs of St.Louis.

Ah yes. Trams are simply adorable. And Light rail is awesome.
