The variousness of words

Hello everypony!I would like to ask for an advice.I never liked talking as much as writing.Yeah, I have tried to write fanfic, but since Hungary is the country where I was born, and naturally I speak Hungarian, I am lack of the appropriate words to describe my thoughts. Reading fanfic I keep a dictionary at hand in case I encounter a new word, which happens very often, pointing out my deficience. Therefore I can't just publish them, they are just not worthy to read, full of the same repeated words.Could I ask for a hint that which English author had/has the widest variety of words or how could I get rid of my defect? Thanks in advance.

Every author writes differently. This is because we all have different thoughts. A thesaurus is very useful when writing fanfics. They contain words known as synonyms, or, words that both mean the same thing. After looking it up in the dictionary, use the thesaurus to  find a simpler word to put in the place the word you are struggling with.

(Typing from my phone, so bear with me...)

Read. Read a LOT. Read fanfics, read classics, read every genre and length of story. As you go along you'll find that you can use context clues (the words/sentences around a new/difficult word) to figure out roughly what the word means.

Before you grab a dictionary, use context clues to try and figure out the meaning on your own. THEN look it up. You'll get much better at figuring out large and new words. Knowing word parts (TELEscope, TELEphone, TELEport, etc).

And if you still need help writing, drop me a line! :)

As not naitive English speaker, I could recommend you only two things:

1. Read a lot on English (I reading on my language only books which were originaly writen on it) And I belives that it does not really matters which author you will read.

2. Write a lot. (DO NOT use simple words, it's better to sit with dictionary for 3-5 minutes but find a word that better express you thoughts than use every time simplier analogue)

Thats how I'm learned English (Whan I started reading I had read only one page of light book in hour. But yes, I still have problems with grammar and times)

The only way to know that is to take a leap of faith and show others your work. Publish something to FiMFiction.net if you're feeling brave! Take constructive criticism, go back and do a little bit better. :)

I got news for you. There is a lot of English speakers/writers that don't know English. So don't feel bad about it.

I agree on the advice given already. I use them all the time and it has really diversified my skills ever since I've started writing fanfiction.

I've always known a wide variety of words I'm just not good at spelling them so when i use something like word checker, i know what word i want.

Just keep reading, really, and write often. It's also about using big words, but using the right word at the right time, which is something a lot of native english speakers don't always pull off. I wouldn't ever recommend posting a first draft of something, but once you have a first draft, you can get some feedback on it and others (proof-readers, editors, ect.) can help point out, and help you find, the right word in the places where the almost right word was used.

I still depend on advice and careful rereading of the first draft to get all right words in all the right places. You just gotta write and write often.
