First impression of pony names

I wonder what people think of pony names when they aren't aware that they are pony related.

 

What would you think of these names if you heard them before joining the herd?

Do they sound silly, childish or maybe cool?

 

English isn't my first language but I try to give my impressions anyway.

 

• Twilight Sparkle - Something mysterious. I like the way it sounds(phonetically) more than any other other name from the show.
• Applejack - I would assume it was meant to be Apple Jack which I see as a generic male name.
• Pinkie Pie - Obviously girly.
• Rarity - Neutral reaction.
• Rainbow Dash - I'd link it to speed because I associate "dash" with Sonic.
• Fluttershy - A bully would use this name to tease someone.
• Spike - It's a dog name.

 

I would be positive that Pinkie Pie is a girl and Applejack and Spike are guys.

I'd assume that Twilight Sparkle and Rainbow Dash are guys too.

Well, at first glance of the show I thought it'd be a bit girly, and didn't see why most people were watching it. But the names kinda made me doubt the show a bit, but not too much.

 

Twilight Sparkle- Didn't really pay attention to the name, I just saw a purple pony who loved books. I figured that maybe she was also into astronomy

 

Pinkie Pie-I thought she'd be some cliche pink-girly pony who loved cupcakes. The cupcakes part I got right, but wow, I have never been so wrong about Pinkie XP 

 

Applejack- I automatically thought of the cereal. I also kinda liked this name because it had a nice ring to it and fit the pony very well!

 

Rainbow Dash- I liked this name, but it never really fit the g3 RD. The g3 RD was way too girly and barely flew or 'dashed'. I like the style of the g4 RD, and seeing her personality, I'm glad that the name made sense now

 

Rarity- Again, didn't really pay attention to the name. But I liked the name,and I've heard of it before. Fits Rarity well!

 

Fluttershy- I loved this name! It sounded really creative and cute, perfect for Fluttershy! The name was catchy too, and fit the pony.

 

Spike- Meh. Thought he would kinda be the type that would pull pranks on the ponies or 'gross them out' and stuff. But the show was totally different from what I expected...in a good way!

 

 

But the names didn't really make me doubt the show, it was really only Pinkie Pie that threw me off, since it sounded girly. But never have I been so wrong!

I like the names, they seem to fit:

Twilight Sparkle: a good student (maybe a bit nerdy), but has unique features (not too girly name, sparkle lets you guess, though)

Applejack: an indigenous pony, the name gives away how much of a tomboy she is, fits well (cold be reffered to as a stallion from the name)

Pinkie Pie: that name sounds exactly like she is, squirly character, always hyped or happy and all in all quite girly

Rarity: a noble name for a noble pony, lets you guess what kind of pony she is and how she feels about herself (girly, but in another way than Pinkie f.e.)

Rainbow Dash: dash, so obviously a name for someone who loves speed and doesn´t turn down a challenge, could be reffered to a stallion as well, but she is quite much of a Tomboy

Fluttershy: a shy person, generally a bit scared, grily (again in another way than Pinkie or Rarity), but has her own charme, and the Flutter kinda let´s you guess about kindness (idk xD)?

and Spike: ._. well, Spike the dragon, he has spikes, so why not call him that? His name already reffers to him not to be a big, dangerous dragon, though.
