So recently I posted a status update that said:

 

Can I ask, how do you make something look evil without making it look spooky?

 

Feld0 (Oh great and wonderful ruler!) gave me the recommendation to post it here as a topic.

 

So I was wondering a few things...

 

1. How do you make something look evil without making it look spooky

2. How can anyone ask for something to be evil but not spooky anyway?

3. How would you think you'd deal with someone who did ask you to create something like this?

Make it monochrome and boring color-wise.

 

Use a lot of dull colors that have a sinister tone, while not exactly this, this is the right idea.

 

You can tell he has bad intentions, but he doesn't look scary.

 

Black and red are good colors for this.

The best example of evil but not spooky that I can think of right now might be the Stormtroopers from Star Wars. They're faceless, uniform, soulless, and there's so many of them. They work because they play on people's misgivings about mindless conformity and the mob mentality.

 

So I guess that would be my advice. Identify a deep-seated fear that people tend to have and present it in a way that is subtle and truthful. It's only when the evil is overblown that things tend to get spooky.

I don't know how to make something "look" evil, for me you're considered evil for your actions or for what you say.

 

If i had any kind of advise i would say don't make him look angry or something like that, don't make him like he (Or she) has a permanent frown on their heads, make them menacing, he (Or she, whatever) has the control, he has nothing to fear becouse there's nothing you can do to stop him, he must have a confident look, not an evil smile but something that tells you that you don't want to mess with him.

 

And that's only if you go for a caracter, if you want a monster then that's another story. In my opinion the best advise is from @@Legatus Equus,

I'd just use a duller color scheme and maybe if you want to a redish tint of eye color. Any menacing looking colors, normally stuff close to black mixed with stuff close to red, but just making them look like they have bad intentions.

 

Scary would mean making them have a big evil grin and all kinds of freaky stuff around them you get the point there
