I program in a host of languages, and I am not saying I have the time, but I do need a few details. Sounds like an interesting project.

What language is this programmed in?

What engine?

What state is the code in at this moment?

Are there any other programmers?

What type of repository do you use?

The game is currently being programmed in AS2 in Flash CS6, but if I find another programmer it might be best just start over with the code, at least for the most part. The game is still early enough in development to do that, and we still have the graphics  music, and other resources. The code has some annotations, but they aren't detailed, and I think it's pretty poor. The the only programmer right now is me, though I've had a person or two email me showing interest. That's probably why the code is so bad, because I'm such a novice and I accidentally made some things worse out of ignorance and lack of foresight. We decided that the need to look for more programmers is urgent because 1. we've concluded I'm not at the level to code something like this and 2. I don't have time to work on something of this scale alone. The code is mainly in a bunch of Actionscript class files in a folder with the Flash file. If you want I can send you a ZIP containing the source. I can program in AS2 and Java, but I could learn other languages if need be.

If you want to maintain a browser friendly status, while working with something a little more robust, I would recommend Java. Flash is just... Terrible. Yeah, send me the code and let me see what you are working with here.

Okay, I sent you a message with a dropbox link, if that doesn't work I think I'd need your email. I chose Flash because 1. It's what I have the most experience with and 2. You can upload swfs to DeviantArt, which I needed for the earliest stages of the game. I think Flash does have it's uses, it works well enough for making small things quickly, games made from it are pretty accessible, and it's more user friendly for new people. Anyway, Java would probably be the best bet.

Signature to come soon. I think. Yeah. Once I think up a nice one. Or when someone makes one for me. Damn it. I need more time to draw and animate poni. >_<

Have you heard about Unity engine? I can program in that... Plus it really is superb. It works for browsers as well, although you need a plugin-but it's smaller than 1mb. It's cross platformness is unmatched, it works for Linux, as well as Mac Os and Windows and it's free.

Okay, thanks. I was looking through the forum for awhile and couldn't figure which topic it belonged in.

Yeah, I've heard of Unity. I downloaded the development software on another computer, but I never really got around to learning how to use it. We'll see how this ends up going.

Anyway, I've had someone send me an email about being a programmer, and from talking it seems that he'll be able to help, but we still need another more experienced lead programmer, so this isn't closed yet.

I looked through your flash resources, and I do not think flash is the best route for a Zelda style clone. Java is probably your best option, and there are java engines that already exist for this style of game.

This is just one option, I would not re-build from the ground up, when good options already exist.

I've used game engines before in class, but I've never used a game engine like this before. So how exactly do I download it and use it to make a game? Also, does it matter that I'm using a Mac?

Java is pretty well universal. It depends on the library. Let me dig into it, and maybe I can put together a little tutorial. However, it is probably a matter of modifying existing resources and going through the readme.

So using the engine is really just modding an existing game, so I could potentially do anything I want with it within the the realms of Java? And do I just download the zip for the source from github?

More or less so. You can use as little, or as much of the framework as you want. For example, the UDK is a top notch game engine (the one I went to college for), and tons of awesome games are made on it.

Bioshock

Bioshock Infinite

Mass Effect

Doomsday

Ect.

But in all reality, they are using the existing framework of Unreal Tournament. Why re-invent the wheel? I will look through the code, and examine a few engines to help get you on the right path. I think this is a neat idea. I know you want something playable in-browser, but Flash is really not the way to go with something like this. At least from this ponies perspective.

Okay, the new programmer looked at Solarus, and apparently it's in C++, not Java. Are you sure this is a Java engine, and if it isn't, any Java ones?
