One of my favorite magical /girl/ animes is Cardcaptor Sakura.

There's also Sailor Moon too.

 

And Puella Magi Madoka Magica which is fairly popular.

 

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is another one. Lots of female characters, magical battles, sci-fi ish, etc
