A Meet-up Sub-section?

I've been looking at the Sugarcube Corner, and thinking that it's a little scattered. There are all kinds of topics in there, and the whole thing is a little... Confusing.

So, I wondered, is it perhaps a possibility that there'd be a section for meet-ups only? Since this is an international site, there'd probably be announcements for many meet-ups in different places around the world - or cons. The largest cons could be bulleted on the top, and people could discuss about the meet-ups there.

Since I'm not the type who usually steps out of the Everfree forest, a meet-up subsection would be cool. Ponies could go and look for meet-ups in their own region, and might even see that there's a meet-up he/she didn't hear about!

The meet-up section could be a little more strict, perhaps - that the OP has to be a suggestion for a meet-up (not specific, but a simple "How about a brony meet-up in the fall in Sydney" could do too, or perhaps "Is anypony going to Bronycon?" is okay too) After that, you're allowed to talk about the meet-up pretty freely - who'd come there, who'd want to come but has complications, who's wondering if he/she is too shy to come... Maybe get to know a few in advance.

I'd see that this would be awesome on this forum.

I don't know if it'd be more active if people get to see actually the threads, since I'm not the type who searches for meet-ups. I'm the kind who's wondering there's anything cool to do, and then open a place where meet-ups would be listed would be just what I need.

I don't really plan when I go to meet-ups, I'm just the kind who does these things in a "whim". And I personally don't think that a master thread really works in a case like this - say, that there are a few meet-ups at the same time. You'd be "forced" to talk via PM's about stuff that all the people in the meet-up need to know, but it would just jam the thread up if there are a couple of others.

There might be inactivity in the "field", but this would bring more clarity to the forum - and perhaps make people want to meet-up more.

For example, I'd like to meet other Finnish bronies from this exact forum, but there aren't that many of us who actively stalk meet-up threads because that kind of meet-ups are very, very, very rare. Same is with a little more... "exotic" places, so to say.

Sorry for the late response; I didn't notice your post. Anyway, I get your point, but I still have to question the popularity of such a section even if it does boost interest. After all, if enough people were interested, there probably wouldn't be any need to dig in the first place. I'm not against the idea, but I'm not sure if the already stretched staff can handle the implementation and maintenance of yet another section. Perhaps a trial run could work? You'd have to await an admin's response for that, though.

While I understand your logic, we're rather conservative about forum sections, as the more you have, the more confusing things become. Subforums only really get added when there is a monstrously insane amount of threads spilling out over everyone to the point of drowning (Twilicorn & the Requests Guild were created from this occurrence). I really don't think an entire subforum is needed for meet-up threads. Might I suggest a custom member-made solution much like how Fan Clubs have been sorted, in Sugarcube? Make a hub thread that lists all the various threads for specific meetups. Then people can follow that topic and go find or make specific meet topics to discuss. Worth a shot. Seems like a happy medium. Can go round up all previously made meet up threads and add them to your hub, and maintain it for the future.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I mean we have the meetup map, and I've yet to see many threads regarding meetups from what I've seen, so I dunno if its really necessary, It might just end up being a very empty section.

If there where meetup threads left and right, then yes i think it would make sense to do a new subforum for them, but I've personally not seen many.

So for now I'm personally fine with just letting occasional meetup threads show up in sugarcube, or even people meeting up through the Meetup map. Until traffic for those threads increase I think its not needed.
