Galaxy S3 Mobile data help

I got a new s3 a while ago and the mobile data isn't working for me and I haven't given it much though cause I am on wifi most of the time. I am leaving for 3 weeks on saturday and was hoping to do stuff on my phone but with data I can't. I have searched on the internets and couldn't find anything that i can make sense of, I am kinda new to smart phones.

I also have an S3: maybe it's the contract your on. On my old Sony I could only use Wi-Fi till I changed my contract to a new one which allowed for mobile data and stuff like that. 

 

Have you got a contract that lets you do internet?

 

If so then is mobile data turned on? (swipe bar on home screen from the top there's a list of options at top or go into settings)

 

Is WI-FI off? because I think it either does one of the other: and personally I use mobile data connection most of the time as my home Wi-Fi is slow.

 

What happens when you try to use your mobile data connection?

I got a 3gb data plan, my data is on, I turn my wifi off when i try to use data. When i try to update my facebook feed it says Network Error. The 4g thing shows looks like it's sending and receiving info.
