hawkflame 3,315 July 16, 2013 Share July 16, 2013 It happened in Cutie Mark Cronicles. I agree, though. I don't think they are actually singing most of the time, I think its just for story telling. I think they actually sang in: Giggle at the Ghostly So Many Wonders The Show Stoppers Hush Now Quiet Now So I think its obviously shown that Fluttershy can sing. I do think there is a difference between ability and talent. I just don't think its really that special if everyone has the ability. And even if the other ponies can't really sing, its shown in the show. I don't know what Sweetie Belles talent could really bring to the show if the other's sing all the time. Thats like if it was shown that everypony took care of animals, then Fluttershy's talent wouldn't be that great anymore. First of all, you have to consider her age too. Having that kind of voice at that age is indeed quite special. That's a pretty powerful set of pipes she has in Hush Now Quiet Now. Better, dare I say, than even Fluttershy. Secondly, ponys talents aren't necessarily super impressive in and of themselves. What exactly does apple bucking bring to the show? As long as Sweetie Belles talent is shown to be and discussed as if it is special, it shouldn't matter. Sig by Thunderstorm Check out my Rarity fansite! Its taking care of the farm and her family, which actually brings a lot to her character and the show.

Yes, it's shown in the show as a means of telling the story in a more interesting way than throwing line after line of expository dialog. I can't think of many actual musicals off the top of my head, but think about if there were a musical describing Napoleon's exploits. The guy who played Napoleon would probably be a great singer, and within the context of the musical, it would work. But if you think about it in real life terms, do you honestly think Napoleon was really a very good singer? That he was really singing when he was off to battle? Also, there is an ability between an ability and a talent. An ability is something one can do. A talent is an ability that one has specialized in. That makes Sweetie Belle's ability to sing - an ability that she does well - a talent. Edited July 16, 2013 by Lowline Thrash

Also, yes, I know they might not actually be good singers, but even if its just a form of storytelling it is still shown in the show. Sweetie Belle being able to sing doesn't really show us anything different. (Not that I don't love Sweetie Belle, I do.)

You seemed to be arguing that just because Sweetie has the ability to sing doesn't mean she's talented. I merely pointed out that a talent is an ability; an ability that is well-practiced. And if "it's shown in the show" is your final answer to the issue, then you're free to feel that way, I guess. Just know that not everyone is going to share that opinion. As long as her voice really is great, and is presented as such, and the characters regard it as really special, I'll buy it. I'll accept it as being unique. Show her entertaining a crowd of ponies or something with a performance. That'll bring something to the show. Sig by Thunderstorm Check out my Rarity fansite! The EverFree Pony 64 July 16, 2013 Share July 16, 2013 We are not sure that singing will be her cutie mark I mean look at her sister she has 3 gems as her mark and yet she makes dress's for a living am sure the writters will make her cutie mark something unexpected and cool there no way for us to know and even if it happens to be for sing no pony is useless ok she dosn't have to do what her mark tells her. lincolnshirepony 527 July 16, 2013 Share July 16, 2013 Well, she still has to develop her talent. Twilight Sparkle didn't start out amazing at magic and Rarity was struggling to perfect her designs. It stands to reason that Sweetie Belle may need to hone her talent a bit more before she gets her cutie mark. As far as the other ponies singing, none of the mane 6 are likely to sing in a performance setting. I think Sweetie Belle would be a performer if singing was her talent. The type of singing the other ponies do seems different because it's not really for the enjoyment of others; it's a way for the characters in the story to be given a different form of expression. DFTBA.
Blique 211 July 16, 2013 Share July 16, 2013 My theory is that the Equestria we see is different from the actual Equestria that the ponies live in. We see an idealized picture. In the "real" Equestria, not everypony can sing really well. Like in our world, they do sing community songs, but they're not necessarily all professional singers. To support my theory, during The Show Stoppers, each CMC was doing a task they weren't good at, notably Scootaloo and her singing. However, during the song portion, Scootaloo actually sang pretty decently. In other words, "bad singing" is idealized as "decent singing". In that manner, "decent singing" is idealized as "amazing singing", as we see in the mane six. There isn't really something above "amazing singing", so when they want to portray Sweetie Belle as an amazing singer, they have to settle for "amazing singing" in the idealized version (which unfortunately can translate backwards to "decent singing"). In addition, she's just a filly, but her singing voice is on par with the best of the cast. That suggests that she'll be even better by the time she's grown up. For the record, I really like Sweetie Belle's voice. She can sing different genres, manipulating her voice with impressive mastery considering her age. Aside from "This Day Aria", I think Sweetie Belle's "Hush Now, Quiet Now" showed off the most vocal ability of all the songs. Her voice is very clear, confident, and endearing. It sounds sweet, and rings like a bell. RrVPfX9cPtw59FpC 1,304 July 31, 2013 Share July 31, 2013 I don't think Sweetie Bell's talent is singing. If it was, we most likely would have seen her cutie mark appear a long time ago. No, I think it's something special. However, you are correct in the fact that they can all sing, but her voice cracks just make it really cute when she does. It is possible that one reason she might not have her cutie mark yet is precisely because of the voice cracks, it is extremely difficult to sing with those kind of voice cracks and the fact that she can do it as well as she can despite the voice cracks is impressive. The bottom line is even if it is not her talent (though I think it is) she has not reached her full potential as a singer yet but probably will once her voice smoothes out as she gets older. Yeah, but the voice cracks are the who reason that she's such a distinctive singer! I mean, if all singers sounded the same, it would be boring! Her voice cracks aren't handicaps, they're parts of her to be appreciated! I didn't mean to say that to badmouth Sweetie Belle, she is my favorite CMC and I think they are adorable but lets be realistic. Once she gets older she will lose the voice cracks, but that dosen't necessarily mean that her voice will sound like the others. Because she has had to deal with the voice cracks it has forced her to experiment with different tones and pitches that she may not have normally done which if anything could strengthen her talent as a singer by giving her a greater range of pitches and octaves to use once she does start to reach her full potential.
