Sterling was very glad that Blue Note performed the stun spell on the gray stallion who was just about ready to punch him. After that though, he heard Blue Note screaming to Sterling, an urgency to run! He instantly began to run, wondering why he stood up against Cheesy so willingly! Maybe it was because he noticed the slight disappointment in Blue Note's eyes when he said the kiss was just an adrenaline rush. Maybe it was because he had enough of UoM's tyrannical rule over his soul. Maybe it was a combination of both. Nevertheless, the two friends ran as fast as they could through, dodging ponies and teachers alike to make sure they got away. They even set up diversions against the four stallions rushing for their humiliation and destruction. Thankfully, Sterling was able to enter Cell Biology class in time, pulling Blue Note into it when Dr. van Dyke was just about to begin class...

Blue Note was panting heavily. Exercise had fallen by the wayside for her as of late. "Thank... Celestia..." she panted. That could have been bad, really bad. Even if Cheesy was a wimp, his friends certainly weren't. Five against two were never good odds. She didn't think they had been followed all the way here. Their shock gave her and Sterling a good start, and there was no way they could pull anything now with a classroom full of ponies. The ponies looked at her and Sterling, which wasn't surprising considering how they had burst in.

Mr. Van Dyke looked at Sterling with open eyes, wondering why he rushed to class so quickly. He then asked Sterling with intrigue,

"Sterling... Who... who is this mare with you? She's not in the class..." Sterling replied with a nervous grin,

"Oh... this... this Blue Note. My.. my best friend. We were being chased by stallions who wanted to beat us up because I defended her."

When Sterling spoke his answer with a nervous chuckle, Chemm broke out in speech from the back seat,

"Mr. Van Dyke. I don't understand why you're even listening to him! He rushed to class simply because he was about to be late! And that was because he's been making his move towards Blue Note without any sense of punctuality!" The other medical students then whistled at Sterling; they too knew about the rumours.

Sterling replied angrily back to Chemm,

"Chemm. I don't understand where you're going with this. I'm sweating buckets. Can't you see that there's some screaming ponies in the distance because they want my head?"

Blue Note realized that she was late to her own biology class after calming down. "At least it's a large lecture..."

However, one mare was making ridiculous comments, that made Blue Note want to slam her head against the wall. Were some ponies really this dense?

"Listen, I don't know what you get up to with your stallions before biology, but some of us do have class, not to mention a sense of propriety. Sterling and I were nearly attacked by a group of ponies. Trust me, I'd much rather be in the right class right now than deal with them." Blue Note hated the feeling of being chased. She remembered walking the Canterlot streets, always staying alert, running when she needed to... They were memories she would rather not revisit.

Mr. Van Dyke clearly was not having this argument right now. He needed to start class right now, so he instantly interrupted the quarrel.

"Girls! I expect you both to behave yourselves! Now... Blue Note is it? You're in my intro biology class yes? Well if that's the case, then I actually want you to sit in for this class. You haven't been showing much appreciation towards the world of biology, and I want you to see it with your very eyes with Sterling. You two can sit beside each other, but keep in mind. I'm only doing this ONCE because of the potential scuffle you might have had with those thugs. Next time, make sure to avoid any possible scuffles here. It's not a place to have them."

Chemm replied with a moan, clearly angered that Mr. Van Dyke had taken Sterling's side in this argument. In defeat, she took her seat and the other ponies murmured about the potential relationship that was Sterling and Blue Note. They even gave a name among the medical students: "Blueling", the nerdy couple.

Sterling was clearly relieved at how it all ended. He didn't have to interject against Chemm for now... but made sure that next time, he would stay away from Cheesy as much as he could as Cell Biology began...

Blue Note took her seat, suppressing a groan. Did she really have to sit through this? If Cheesy hadn't interrupted her, she could have just gone to her regular biology class and be done with it by now. She couldn't tell off a professor like a peer. "Why did he ever talk to me in the first place? I should have never gone to that party..."

Her mind wandered off into all the places she could have corrected her mistakes. She could have noticed Cheesy sooner. She could have just shut her mouth every time he spoke to her instead of firing off at him. Maybe he would have given up on antagonizing her. She probably should have just left instead of arguing with Chemm. "If ponies weren't so stupid..."

Sterling could see a look of annoyance on her face as she was forced to sit through Cell Biology. Throughout the class, he couldn't help but notice how unhappy Blue Note looked. It made him feel bad for standing up for Blue Note, when he should have just walked away peacefully. Luckily, the class went by quickly and before he knew it, the class had ended. He walked over meekly to Blue Note and then asked humbly and with a warm smile,

"Hey... I was wondering... If... if you're still up for playing together now. It'll probably be a stretch considering what happened this morning, but I was hoping we could try out a duet piece together? We'll probably get away from Cheesy that way. After all, he HATES classical music by the sounds of it."

"I doubt he even knows what it is," Blue Note said. "I wouldn't mind playing some music. It's the only way I can cling to my sanity." She was aware that she probably hadn't done her reputation many favors today. Cheesy was just going to hate her even more, and now this Chemm pony probably had a reason to dislike her.

"Ugh, I think we're surround by idiots. I hate ponies that resort to violence." What was the point of attacking them anyway? It certainly didn't accomplish anything, except make everypony's life slightly more miserable.

Sterling was happy that Blue Note had accepted his invitation to play on the piano together. He was hoping that maybe... just maybe... they could sing together. Sterling was never a public singer, but he sure loved to sing in private. That was his top priority as he walked with Blue Note to the practice halls at the music room. He heard that they had just bought a new Steinhay and Sons piano for the students' pleasure. Deep down, Sterling knew that they would probably be one of the few ponies who would actually bother to play on it. Nonetheless, Sterling walked happily with Blue Note to get ready for their practice together...

---------------

After Cell Biology class, Chemm was visibly frustrated with herself.

"Why does this always happen to me?! I never get anything my way here! It's not fair! Sterling's getting all the favours from my science professors, even with my high grades and high work ethic! I just don't understand it! What makes Sterling so different?! His autism?! That's not fair! Ooh... Those two really give me the willies... Why did I even start that rumour in the first place?! Look where things are now! Nothing's changed! How can I possibly find a way to really make Sterling miserable?! UGH! There's GOT to be something... Even then, everything I do will just lead them to being closer together and more favour from the profs! I need something deeper... much deeper... but WHAT?!" Chemm continued to speak to herself quietly as she moved on to her next health science class...

Ruby was satisfied with her practice session. It had been yet another wonderful run through. She was sure that she would get the leading role in school's next musical production. "The joys of singing!" She was walking out of the practice rooms, when she saw something that ruined her happy feelings. Blue Note and Sterling Crimson were walking together! The rumors of their couple status had been flying around. Ruby couldn't believe even Sterling would want to date somepony like her.

"That pony is so arrogant. Somepony needs to take her down a peg. Honestly, insisting everypony call her Blue Note like she's anything special. Why, if I made everypony call me Ruby Diamond, what would they think of me?"  She changed her route to avoid running into them.

Blue Note loved going into the practice rooms. It could be just her and her music. The space for students to practice was one of the best parts about the music school, in Blue Note's opinion. "So what are we going to play?" Blue Note asked.

Sterling had a mischievous look on his face for a mere moment. He wanted to try something different for once... So Sterling spoke with a giggle,

"Blue Note... I was wondering... can you sing? Here's a song I found that I really love. I think you'd be great at singing it! Imagine yourself as a nun trying to teach schoolchildren how to sing. It's such a cute song, and I think you would be great as a motherly figure!"

------------------------------------

Theatre Lout was frustrated. His purple mane was the highest of class, the greatest of all Manehattan many said. His cutie mark was one of suave and of prominence, the two masks that represented drama. He breathed drama. It was too bad the drama here was appalling. He had many parts to fill in for the momentous "South Pacific". There was no pony who could play the roles of Emile DeBecque and Ensign Nellie Forbush, the main characters of the play. Ruby Diamond was apparently set to come in for an audition, but he didn't have high hopes. And Cheesy was also set to come in today. Many of the supporting roles had already been set, but some others were STILL missing! Like Liat and Luther Billus! Theatre then began to speak in his posse English accent,

"Ugh! This is so frustrating! I can't find anypony who would be suitable for the main roles! This is really getting into my nerves! Nopony's eccentric enough, caring enough... DIFFERENT enough... Most ponies here are all the SAME! There's no uniqueness! South Pacific defines character! Persona! Prejudice! I need two ponies who are DIFFERENT! Let us hope that this "Cheesy" and "Ruby" will do, although I doubt it... The name "Cheesy" breathes clumsiness and rebellion. Maybe he'll fit well with the role of Billus... we'll see..."

Blue Note just stared at Sterling. "A motherly figure? This has to be some kind of joke." As the silence between them thickened she realized that he was serious.

"I don't sing. Sure, when I'm composing by myself, I'll sing the pieces, but I'm not a vocal performer. Besides, I'm not maternal in the slightest." Blue Note didn't mind playing her clarinet or on a piano, but that was different. She was comfortable with those instruments. Her voice was a different beast altogether.

-------------

Ruby was feeling confident about her audition, as usual. The voice majors didn't stand a chance against her powerful pipes. She would take the spotlight in the center stage, right where she was destined to be! Stars were on the horizon for her. She walked into the theater like she owned it, and waited for her audition time.

Sterling looked at Blue Note with a really sad face. He tried to look as cute as he could so that Blue Note would give in... he loved this musical, and he really wanted his best friend to at least try to sing... He replied to her with disappointment and his cutest face he often gave to his parents to convince them to do what he wanted,

"Look... I... I'm sorry I said that. But I really do think you're not giving yourself a chance... I sing privately too, but ponies have thought I was terrible... can... can you at least give it a try? I find singing to be a way to just vent out and relax from the world around you... PWEEASE?!"

--------------------------------------

Theatre Lout was waiting for Ruby to audition. It was time. He walked out to the doors and then called out to Ruby,

"Ruby Diamond! Are you ready for your audition? Let us hope you have personality..."

Blue Note giggled at him. "You know you look ridiculous." Still, if it was that important to him, she may as well. It was only for Sterling for after all. He was her best friend, and it wasn't like anypony would be around to hear here. She sighed. "Okay, pass me the music. Just don't expect too much."

--------

"Oh, trust me, I have plenty of personality!" Ruby strutted up onto the stage, ready to shine. "I am going to be singing one of my favorite songs from my favorite musical!"

This was one of the moments she had been waiting for her whole life. Years of vocal training from Equestria's best teachers and countless hours of practice had gone into this moment. She was going to star in this musical and start getting noticed by Broadhay's finest. Eventually ponies would be begging to see her perform. Her name would get so big, that everypony would be lining up to hear her songs. She could just bask in the perfection of this moment.

"Here is "What I Did for Love" from A Chorus Line!"

Sterling knew it would work. His cute face always worked, even with his parents at times! He giggled back at Blue Note before replying,

"Yay! Thanks so much Blue Note! This is for you anyway! Singing is the most natural instrument we have! I didn't care how badly I sang! I just sing for fun! Well... you did hear me sing Sineightra though... Well, here's the song! I hope you have fun with it! I'll accompany you on the Steinhay and sing the schoolchildren's part!"

Sterling then handed the world famous song, "Do Re Mi"... it wasn't too hard right? He thought as he gave the sheet music to dear Blue Note, hoping to introduce her to a world of singing...

-------------------------

Theatre Lout was beginning to become bored with Ruby... Her singing voice was great, but she wasn't the perfect Nellie. She had spunk, but it was abnormally high... almost naive... something was off... Maybe... maybe...

"You know what? Your voice is great! However... I think you would be better as Bloody Mary... I can see you around many stallions and having a lot of spunk!"

Blue Note felt awkward and out of character singing the song Sterling had handed her. Her voice wasn't too bad, thanks to the practice she had singing her own compositions. Still, singing in front of another pony was an odd experience. Whoever had written the song certainly did not have somepony like her in mind. "I guess this is what acting is? Pretending to be somepony else." Somewhere deep within herself, it felt liberating to be able to belt out a song, but the discomfort of the experience overpowered that.

-------------

Ruby wasn't sure how to take this news. She had always dreamed of being the star! Who could be a better Nellie than her? Arguing with the casting director wouldn't get her anywhere though. She had to appear graceful, and maybe she could still shine as Bloody Mary. It still bothered her that there would be somepony more fitting than her. "I'll just have to be even better than them."

Sterling had just finished playing the piece with Blue Note. She was right... maybe she didn't fit as well in this role... maybe there was another piece? Either way, Sterling wanted to sing. He first clapped at Blue Note's singing because to him, it sounded very heavenly.

"Great job Blue Note! That was great singing! I knew you can do it! You even did well despite being out of character! Now I want to sing! Here's a number I want you to sightread."

The piece was "On the Street Where you Live". A very romantic piece. It was the perfect way to express his feelings for Blue Note without revealing them to her. He didn't want her to know yet. It would have been very catastrophic if he did, but still. He at least wanted to try to hint it, and so he did. And he began to sing as well...

------------------------

Theatre Lout was happy with his choice. Ruby had a lot of spunky, and Bloody Mary was a very spunky and humorous character to him. He then realized that Cheesy was up next. Thankfully the last pony on the list. He walked out of the dark auditorium through the wooden doors and then called for Cheesy to sing next...

Blue Note was listening to Sterling sing as she played along. What was he getting at with that specific song? He did seem like the hopeless romantic type, and maybe he just really liked it. In light of recent events, she suspected that there was more behind it. She wasn't going to question him though.

"Not bad, not bad. Maybe we should have been in chorus," she said jokingly.

------------------

Cheesy had been having a bad day. A very bad day.

It had started out with the rumors about Sterling and Blue. Once his friend was stunned, he had chased after them with the rest of his crew. Blue and Sterling had been a little too good at planning their escape route, because he had gotten nabbed by an admin. A couple of ponies had reported the fight to the administration. His buddies all got away, so he was the one who took all the heat.

"Okay, Mr. Cheesecake. I want you to explain what happened to me." Cheesy had found himself talking to whoever the pony in charge of doling out the punishments was. He was sitting across from the imposing gray earth pony in a nice office space. The nameplate on his desk read "Mr. Glitter." Cheesy would normally snicker, but something told him that now wasn't the time.

"It's Cheesy." How was he going to get himself out of this one?

"Listen, I just want your side of the story," Mr. Glitter said. "I want this to go as smoothly as possible for all involved, so let's just put the matter to rest, okay? I'll be happy if I don't have any paper work."

Cheesy had to think fast. "Well, see, between you and me, there's this mare. She has this real bad taste in guys, and I just wanted to help her out. Her latest coltfriend ain't a good for her, y'know?"

"Get to the point, Mr. Cheesecake."

"I just wanted to stand up for her. Well, her coltfriend didn't like that too much. It got a little out of hand. I didn't want to threaten him; I just wanted to help her cause she's real pretty. And my buddy didn't mean no harm, she's just stunned him cause she's a bit jumpy."

Mr. Glitter studied Cheesy. He seemed concerned enough, but the witness accounts seemed to tell a different story. But it would be such a hassle to get everypony involved, and he loathed paperwork.

"Okay, Mr. Cheesecake. It seems like you had good intentions. However, you can't go around poking your nose in other ponies business like that, and you certainly can't threaten them. I think you just something to keep yourself busy and out of trouble."

"Uh oh..." Cheesy didn't like where this was going.

"I think you need to join an extracurricular activity. There are plenty of options at the University of Manehatten. We have a book club."

"Too much reading," Cheesy said. He was barely passing composition.

"Well, there are the mathletes," Mr. Glitter suggested. Anything to get this colt out of his office!

"Too much math. Got anything that's not like school?"

Mr. Glitter was getting fed up with Cheesy's attitude. "Fine, I'll pick your activity for you, and it won't be like school. You will participate in the production of South Pacific put on by the performing arts department. You're going to participate in it from start to end. If I hear otherwise, you're going to be in real trouble." He glared threateningly.

Cheesy wasn't sure what real trouble was, but he couldn't screw up too much. No way could he get kicked out or let his parents get wind of this. At least U of M was terrible at enacting disciplinary action. He couldn't believe no pony even tried to get Sterling or Blue Note's side of the story. He would just have to suck up being in the musical.

However, he was aware of what this could do to his rep. He had to find a way to avoid being noticed. He didn't want to be one of those weird artsy ponies. His buddies would never let him live it down!

Hours later, he found himself waiting outside the theater for his audition. He was all alone, and he didn't like it. He was all nerves as he made his way to the stage.

Sterling heard Blue Note's compliment loud and clear. Deep down, he wished Blue said something more, but if this was all he was getting for now, it was fine. He replied with a slight blush on his face,

"Oh thanks Blue Note. Choir would be a decent option for the both of us, but yeah. In reality, we both have our instrumental skills to keep up eh? Well... let's move on to instrumental music. We can get to this duet in a little bit. But first! Did you come up with anything new lately? I'd love to hear your compositions again! They're always great to listen to!"

-----------------

Theatre could see the nerves emanating from Cheesy. He didn't like it one bit. If this was the stallion who wanted to play in South Pacific, then things weren't looking good for him at the moment. He was the last actor, and boy did he look... uninspiring. Still, he had to give the benefit of the doubt. After all, some of his roles still needed to be filled.

"So your name is Cheesy huh? Well show me what you've got. You can't be cheesier than you already are at the moment." Theatre spoke with a slightly condescending tone, not expecting much from this stallion...

"Yeah, I don't think I could handle choir. I'll stick to band and orchestra." Singing really wasn't her thing anyway. She much preferred composing. "Well, I do have something for clarinet and piano, if you'd like to try it out." She had been spending a lot of time working on the piece in the last few days...

----------------

Cheesy just stood their a moment. The director was writing him off already. Perhaps this was his chance to get out of this. "I don't even know how to sing anyway! If I'm terrible, there's no way he'll let me in."

"Uh, yeah. Well, I'm gonna sing the best song ever!" Cheesy dug through his mind, trying to think of the least impressive, worst song he could possibly sing. Then it hit him. There was this really stupid song that he remembered his little cousin listening to. It was in his  not so humble opinion horrible. Luckily he had heard it enough times to remember enough words to give a convincingly terrible performance.

Sterling was impressed when she had something ready for clarinet and piano. It was the perfect chance to finally link up with two different instruments, leaving him fairly excited. Sterling replied with a nod and a beaming smile,

"Sure! That would be perfect! Let's try that out ok?" Sterling then took the sheet music for the piano and began to sightread it just to see what the piece was like...

-------------------

The song was terrible. The singer was terrible. Still, this stallion looked like the funny sort. He was so bad he would be a perfect comedian! He knew it was within this stallion! He was the perfect Billus! Low-class, rebellious, and especially nervous! It was perfect! After the audition, Theatre replied with a smile,

"Cheesy. That was hilariously horrible. I know the perfect role for you! Luther Billus! He's the perfect comedian, just like you! I think it'll go great with you! First rehearsal is next week at 6:00 pm! Be there or be square!"

Now to find the perfect Emile and Nellie... Maybe he wasn't looking hard enough... it was a huge university after all... maybe he would try the practice rooms... Hmm...

Blue Note handed him the piano part. She wondered if sharing this piece with him was a good idea. "No going back now..." It was the romantic music she had imagined in her fantasy. It was a slower number, meant to accent a romantic evening. It was the quintessential date music.

---------

Cheesy hung his head in shame. He actually had a role in the musical. He was actually going to be in the musical. There was nothing left to do, except figure out the best way to hide this. "At least no pony important isOh Celestia, Ruby is here!" She could decimate his reputation by waving a hoof. It was already too late; she was making eye contact with him!

Ruby thought it was strange that Cheesy would want to be in a musical. He had no understanding of art. She didn't really care what he did though. He was of no real importance to her. The real importance was in finding out which pony would play Nellie and stand in her spotlight. Whoever she was, she should be prepared for some competition.

Sterling took a good look at the piece. He practiced with it for a moment before motioning for Blue Note to play it. His first thoughts were one of wonder and intrigue. This piece was particularly romantic... why was it so romantic? The leading tones that resolved, the warm chords that were introduced, and the warm, comfy feeling were all there. They were the signs of a mare... in love... It left him reeling... The piece must have been composed some time after their night together... did the kiss really mean something deeper for her... Sterling could only sigh happily as he prepared himself to play with Blue Note. Maybe... she really wanted love from him. But other signs said otherwise. Sterling couldn't tell. The ambiguity was beginning to get to his head...

The tune reminded him of the opening song of South Pacific, "Dites-Moi". Maybe he could sing it someday just as a cute song for Blue Note. After all, he had the South Pacific music with him. He could try that after this was done. It was sounding great, and Sterling was wondering if he could use it as a reply for Blue Note's romantic piece to see how she felt... Nevertheless, Sterling was back to his music, playing it as romantically as he could...

-----------------------------------

(Time for me to try first person... hehehehe)

This university is a wonderful place, filled with many ponies bursting with rumour, drama, and romance. In fact, I was an alumni here, and I know too well of all these things. Now, the only problem is that I still have yet to find the ponies who would take my star roles for this musical! It is such a shame that such a large university cannot breed such fine ponies for these unique roles! We have a musical production this winter, and I'm fast running out of time!

I walked out of the dark auditorium halls. Thank goodness we're not using these for the musical. It looks too bland to be a musical set! We're using the Lincoln Arts Performing Centre, the breeding ground of the musical star! Something deep in me said I should go over to the music halls to find my stars. After all, that's where all the singers would go for practicing. Maybe I could find a couple singing together, and they would be the perfect Nellie and Emile! If only luck would have it that way... Oh well, I'll still give it a go! Maybe luck will have it that way. We'll see...

(OOC: Sorry I was MIA yesterday. The internet at my house is out until a technician can look at it.)

Blue Note wondered if the piece was too much after the two were done playing it. "Hm... I think it might need a few revisions," she said, quickly levitating his part back to her. "It was just something that's been floating around in my head." She felt awkward for  suggesting they play it. It had just seemed like the perfect choice, since it was for piano and clarinet. "I just hope he didn't take it the wrong way."

(That's terrible. Any idea how long it's out?)

Sterling looked at Blue Note with a weird look. It was already sounding wonderful. Most of the revisions were very minor. Just a few chord changes and everything would already be set. Sterling didn't want much to change; he loved the piece the way it was...

"Oh Blue Note. It sounds wonderful as is. Of course, you can change a few chords here and there, but you portrayed warmth and delicacy so beautifully here. It's almost child-like." Sterling commented, careful not to insinuate his feelings so early. He then continued,

"You know... there WAS one other piece I want to sing. Here. Have a look see. It's called "Dites-Moi", from South Pacific. You can play the piano part and sing with me if you want. It's a very child-like and cute song, just like your composition."

Sterling then took out the South Pacific sheet music and levitated it to Blue Note with his crimson horn. He walked to the center stage and nodded for Blue Note to begin play...

----------------------------------------

I had just walked into the practice rooms. The same as always. Except... there was a new Steinhay and Sons in the room. It looked so beautiful, and it sounded wonderful as well. I peeked into the practice rooms and noticed two ponies... a stallion and a mare... and they were singing from South Pacific... I was ecstatic! They sounded so perfect... so confident... and so lovely... They looked like the perfect couple too! It was perfect! However, I knew I couldn't just storm into the practice rooms while they were singing, so I waited patiently outside, listening to the innocent yet lovely number that was "Dites-Moi"...
