A quick doodle

Hey guys! So tonight I was doing a little bit of doodling and decided I wanted to try a new shading technique. Its sort of like, half cross hatching, if that makes sense. I'v seen in done is sketches like this: http://macmon33.deviantart.com/art/random-sketches-386334297

 

I'v always thought it looked cool, and wanted to test it out on this doodle here. Something just looks off about the shading though. How do I make it look like the shading in those sketches there? What am I doing wrong here? Any advice or tips would be very much appreciated! (And dont worry, I know, she looks a bit chubby here, its just a doodle though   And I'm sorry if I messed something up on this post. This is only my second post, and my first post with added images) Thanks!
