“Thank you, thank you very much” Balloon smiled, the crowd of ponies that he was addressing were cheering him with great energy “Thank you for voting me as your leader”

Balloon motioned for the crowd to quieten down.

“I’m aware that our situation is dire. That much is obvious” he rolled his eyes, a few of the crowd chuckled “But as with all problems in life, we make do with what we’ve got, right?”

Behind the red pony are recently built shacks surrounding the crash site.

 

“Too be honest with you... Poor choice of words for a politician, let me start that again!” He laughed “Too be quite frank, I don’t think we’re in a bad situation. No pony died during the crash that we know of. We’ve got plenty of food to last us months. And some of us are already working on building farms. The river at the bottom of this hill is a blessing!”

The crowd happily talk amongst themselves.

 

“Now, I might not be the most professional pony here. Heck, I worked as a comedian for the past 20 years” he rolled his eyes “But I am arguably the most caring pony you’d ever meet”

The crowd let out a few cheers.

“Thanks guys. Anyways, I’ll be walking around the place, seeing how every pony is doing. If you happened to stumble on a problem, just come find me and I’ll do what I can to help” Balloon grins “If your looking for some work to do, Security Officer Everett will be giving out jobs. You can find him in one of the shacks”

 

He starts to make his way of stage.

“I wish you luck everyone. I’ll be around making more humorous speeches later” he winks at a nearby mare, she faints

Fire sharp quickly trotted over to Balloon. She needed to talk to him before he went away to do something else and this could become a problem if it didn't get sorted out quickly.

 

"Hey, Mr Balloon. I do have a problem. The river at the hill may not be the safest thing. I checked it out and it looks al-right from the surface and the plants do have some activity but we've only been here for a day and we need to test the water before it causes some serious problems. I've been in enough scenarios were something may have looked right but really wasn't."

Balloon smiled at the approaching mare

 

"That's some good thinking Ms Sharp, luckily we've been drinking from our own water supply so far" He pointed towards a Yellow stallion "Tell Security Officer Everett that I gave you permission to check out the river. He'll give you the necessary equipment to carry out the task"

after listening to the speech of his newfound leader, Repsol quickly trotted over to the shack of the securtity officer. unfortunately, when he arrived there was allready a line of ponies forming by the front door. 

after looking at his options again, he decided to just get in line and wait. he wouldn't get far without a job anyways.

"this is gonna be just perfect.." Repsol sighed under his breath

Fire looked a bit startled at Balloon knowing her name, but she guessed he would've known at least some of them since he was their leader. Fire nodded and a quite thanks left her lips as she trotted over to the massive line in front of the Security stallion.

Fire walked over to the line and ended up behind an orange stallion. With litterally nothing else to do she thought she couls start up a conversation.

"So... what you waiting in line for?"

Repsol was kinda startled by a voice coming up behind him. as he turned to the source, he spotted a unicorn mare looking at him.

"me? oh uhhm. just seeing if there's a job for me to do around here. i'm not gonna be a big help just standing around."

he looked over her once then spoke up again.

"what about you?"

"I'm concerned about our new water source, I know that we've been using it for growing the crops and all that but we really have no idea if it's actually safe to use or not. So I have to ask for some equipment to test it... If you have no job to do, I could need some help with carrying the equipment down the hill, and some help testing it."

Repsol perked up upon hearing the job offer. "oh yeah, that would be great."

he looked back at the shack again, a critical look forming on his face. "you sure they have that kind of equipment there tough? i mean, it doesn't look very promising right now."  he said as he turned back to the mare.

"Next please?" Everett called out

 

The yellow stallion was sat at a desk, scribbling in a notebook. He saw two ponies up ahead in the line that were chatting. He waited for a minute before calling out again.

 

"Next please!" He said in a more stern tone, hoping to grab their attention

"I do hope that they have the equipment, but I can make do with the more simpler tools and I know a couple of tricks that we can do. Though in our situation I think the likely hood of good, proper equipment is probably low."

 

The stallion at the front was calling out to them and Fire walked towards the desk. She gathered her confidence and spoke.

 

Hey there, I'm Fire sharp. I have a slight problem with the new water source at the bottom of the hill and I was wondering if me and my friend here could test it out, to see if there's anything wrong and could get us somewhere dire."

 

Fire realised that she hadn't introduced herself to the new pony and felt really embarrassed at that.

 

"I've got permission from Balloon to use what equipment we have to test that it's al-right."

Repsol looked over at the direction the voice came from. he trotted over to the desk with the mare he met and sat decided it was best to just let her do the word. she was the expert afer all..right?

hmm, i havn't even introduced myself yet. that's...awkward.

Everett raised an eyebrow at the two. He scribbled in his notebook again.

 

"Very well, I'll just make note of where you two are going" He said with a lack of energy "As for equipment, I don't know if we have anything that could help off the top of my mind. But Doctor Hearth, she's over in the shack with a red cross on it, she might have something. Go ask her"

 

He ripped a page out of the notebook and handed it to the duo. It had the title 'Check River' written on it as well as his signature.

"Just hand that back to me when your done. That way I can keep track of things"

Fire Sharp took the paper with her magic and nodded to the yellow stallion. She really didn't want to keep walking around and asking people for stuff but it had to be done in this kind of society.

 "Thanks."

She turned around, away from the desk and the orange stallion followed her.

 

"So, I'm Fire Sharp, what's your name?"

as repsol trotted after the mare, he gave the yellow stallion behind the desk a small "thanks" as goodbye. after some more trotting the mare suddenly spoke up again. "nice to meet you, Fire Sharp. my name's Repsol Rave, but everypony just calls me Repsol." he stuck his hoof out in greeting, his muzzle sporting a friendly smile.

"so yeah, just call me Repsol."

Fire shakes his hoof and gave him one of her friendly, greeting smiles as he gave her and then got back to the task of looking for the next shack.

 

"So Repsol, you good at any sciency stuff, I only know a few things and tricks that we could do to check the water but if we do have the equipment we'll need to be able to read it somehow."

"i know more about mechanics than i know about sciency stuff actually." he tapped his chin with his hoof in thought.

"but i do know a few tricks to test if that water is clean. like, we could take a cup of the water and span a little cloth over it, through condensation the water will get in the cloth. then we could squeeze the water out of the cloth and see what stuff stays behind in the cup.

but that's just an idea tough."

A smile escaped Fire's mouth and a smile was left on her lips.

 

"I know that party trick, but that would take some time and I would like to get it over with quite quickly. My Father was a scientist so I have some knowledge about testing the water. Though we'll need some basic stuff like a couple of chemicals or maybe even food coluring with some flasks. I wouldn't even know if we have flasks though, they may not have survived the crash."

 

Fire again felt just a tad bit embarressed about rambling along but she was properly concerned about the water.

Repsol grinned at the mare, she really did know her stuff with this it seemed.

"well, we should be able to find them in that shack over there if there are any." Repsol said, pointing a hoof in the direction of the shack with the big red cross on it.

"but yeah, it would be very close to a miracle if any flasks survived all this."

Repsol pointed towards the shack they were looking for and Fire started to head in that direction. She wondered why she didn't see it before but she was busy with introducing herself.

 

The two walked together until they got to the hut with the red cross. Fire called into the hut to see if the doctor was in.

"Dr. Hearth? Are you in?"

Three ponies with medical jackets were in the tent. They were busy trying to get some machinery working.

Dr. Hearth, a white unicorn with pink hair, heard her name called. She stopped what she was doing, exited the hut and approached the duo.

 

"Uhh... Hello" She said shyly "Some pony called for me?"

Fire pointed back the way Repsol and her came.

"I was wondering if I could get some equipment for something. I'm concerned for the safety of our new water supply and me and my friend here need some equipment just to check. You wouldn't happen to have anything of the sort would you?"

"Oh, we do have equipment for checking water" Hearth said "But it broke during the crash landing, we're trying to fix it now"

 

She frowned "I'm terribly sorry about that. However, I can come with you if you want. I know how to check for clean water... if you don't mind me being around of course" She thought she was being rude by trying to go along with the two ponies, a small blush warmed her cheeks

Repsol looked around the little shack. there where two ponies working on a piece of machinery.

"hey miss heart. i'm sorry if i'm being rude or anyhting but i know a thing or two about mechanics. do you mind if i take a look at that machine over there?" he pointed a hoof in the direction of the machine.

"Me and Repsol figured that it would've broke during the crash, do you maybe have any flasks or chemicals that we could use instead. And I think that more the merrier on this little trip down to the river would be better."

 Fire gave the doctor a warming smile with her request and invitation, distracting her a little bit from Repsol's offer so that she wasn't overwhelmed.
