Sterling had just awoken from his slumber. He had just moved from Manehattan and was feeling very tired from the sudden move he and his family had to make. He wasn't sure why they had to move so suddenly. Everything was going so smoothly in Manehattan, and his parents were so happy being sports journalists! He remembered the day his parents suddenly told him to pack his belongings and move to Baltimare. He tried to ask why they had to move and the fact he would miss all of his nerdy friends, but they didn't give him an answer. They just told him to pack up and get ready to go within the new few weeks. At Sterling was able to say his goodbyes, but it wasn't much compensation.

 

Sterling was in a larger house than the apartment they had to live while in Manehattan. It was certainly much more comfy and it was certainly a bright sunny day outside in Baltimare, but something... still wasn't right. He could feel it. His parents didn't seem as happy as they were before... But he had to shrug it off. School was going to start soon, and when Sterling saw his clock, he quickly got up, noticing that it was 8:00 am... He had to get ready for school that started in an hour! 

 

Sterling quickly took his daily bath, daily breakfast of cabbage salad and quickly gathered his belongings before he waved goodbye to his parents. They gave him a happy smile as Sterling walked out of his home, and just like that, Sterling was on his way to school on a bright late summer day...

Corona woke up early that morning, it was the first day of the new school year. Corona wasn't terribly enthused with starting at a new school, her past experience had been bad before and she wasn't giving high hopes. Having just moved to Baltimare from Cloudsdale a week before school started. Corona got into the shower and slowly got a very relaxing and hot shower, afterwards brushing and drying off. She headed downstairs seeing her mother Star Dancer and her father Feather Note already in the dining room. Star gave Corona her toast and jam along with some orange juice which Corona quickly ate.

 

Their house was a nice average sized cottage that could easily house a small family of three. The best selling point of the whole house was it's back yard. It was a beautiful and rather large back yard that would make having parties easy. Corona finished packing her saddlebags and tossed them onto her back. Opening the front door Corona took off into the sky and headed straight towards school well on time and making it there with 10 minutes to spare.

Sterling walked with excitement and nerves to start his school-day. He wasn't sure how the day was going to proceed. He was always poked at because of his looks and his autism. For some odd reason, the other fillies and colts called him retarded and other mean things just because he was different. He was excited to start fresh, but nervous that the other ponies here would be the same as the ones he encountered long ago, the ones who continually teased him...

 

Sterling arrived to Hoofstomp High with a few minutes to spare, and he was so excited about stepping into school that he didn't notice a banana peel right in front of him. He stepped on the peel, slipped across the hallway, and landed head first onto the ground. He could hear the other ponies beginning to laugh at him for being so clumsy... Well... so much for a good start to school, as Sterling gave out a deep sigh and a groan as he trotted to his first class, algebra, rubbing his head to soften the pain he felt...

Corona was pulling her things out of her locker when she heard somepony holler before go sliding past her and hitting the ground. Corona giggled slightly, not at the fact that he'd been so clumsy but the fact that he didn't seem to care too much. Corona walked into her fist class and it was the same class as the pony who'd just slid down the hall. Corona took her seat next to the maroon stallion and saw that he was rubbing his head. Reaching into her saddlebag Corona pulled out a cold pack for her lunch and held it out to him. "Here this might make you feel a little better. I thought you were really cool, not many ponies would just get up and walk that off with so many ponies laughing. I know I couldn't, by the way my names Corona."

As Sterling continued to rub his head, he was thinking about what a horrible day it was going to be... starting as a new pony, and instantly starting off by being clumsy. Great. Ponies were already going to begin remembering him as a klutz... and it would be a notion really hard to remove at this point...

 

Suddenly, a grey pony with a colourful mane sat by Sterling. She then offered him a cold pack, to which Sterling nervously took. Realizing that she was a mare, he knew how deceitful many of them were, and he was worried that the cold pack was going to be a prank. He slowly took the cold pack towards himself, felt it around with his hooves to make sure it wasn't a fake. He then placed it onto his head, which comforted him greatly.

 

Afterwards, the grey mare introduced herself. Her name was Corona. He thought it was a nice name. When he heard Corona's voice, he thought it was really friendly. Sure other mares were just as friendly that turned out to be jerks in the end, but Corona seemed... different. He replied with a soft and nervous voice,

 

"Umm... thanks. N-N-Nopony's ever told me that after I slipped. My... my name's Sterling. Sterling Crimson. Pleased to meet you." Feeling a new sense of confidence slowly build, Sterling nervously extended his hoof to signal what was hopefully the beginning of a deep friendship...

Corona smiled seeing Sterling place the cold pack on his head. Corona had wondered why he was so cautious with it at first and could only conclude that he'd had some trouble like her in the past with school. Corona let out a little giggle when she heard Sterling talk to her and extended his hoof. Corona was quite surprised that somepony would want to be friends with her. She'd had friends back at her old schools but they turned out to be liars and ended up hurting her.

 

Corona looked at the hoof waiting a response from her. She wasn't sure about things but Sterling seemed to be genuine in his response and actions. Plus he was a little cute in Corona's eyes and it kinda seemed like they would need each other to make it through this school year. Corona extended her hoof and touched Sterling's giving him a shake. "It's nice to meet you too Sterling." Corona smiled, she couldn't escape the feeling that this was a friendship that was going to last.

Sterling noticed Corona's delayed response to shaking her hoof. Maybe she too went through some trouble with stallions... like how he went through trouble with mares in his life. Sterling proceeded to shake his hoof with Corona, happy that he had made his first friend so quickly... especially after what just transpired earlier. He could hear other ponies giggling happily as they prepared for algebra. Most of the ponies didn't seem to notice him and Corona, and that Sterling didn't mind at all. 

 

With that, Sterling took out his algebra textbook before he asked Corona with intrigue,

 

"So Corona, what's your schedule like? After Algebra, I have Biology and English before Lunch. I then have Music before the class day is over." After asking, Sterling hoped that Corona possibly shared the same schedule as him so that they could be able to chat some more... because she seemed like a really nice and cute mare...

Corona rummaged through her saddlebag pulling out various things, one of those was a book titled "How To Murder Your Friends With Great Food" before pulling out her class list. "Hmmm well after this it looks like we've got the same schedule except for the end. I have cooking for my final class." Corona crumpled up her paper and tossed it back into her bag, it was then that she heard another student gasp upon seeing the book title. The book now having a few papers on it showing only "How To Murder Your Friends" on it. Corona blushed and hurriedly put the book back into her saddlebag. "I'm not looking forward to Algebra, it's my hardest class and Biology isn't much easier for me."

Sterling looked at Corona with a shocked look. They really had the same schedules?! Other than the last class?! While Sterling's body showed shock, he really wanted to show excitement. His head was reeling since they would have so many chances to be with each other throughout the day. Sterling didn't notice the book that Corona accidentally showed when she crumpled up her paper, but he did hear Corona talk about the difficulties of algebra and biology.

 

"Don't worry about those subjects Corona! I'm great at both topics! In fact, I want to be a doctor when I grow up, and I have to know all this biology stuff anyway! So you can be my first student then!" Sterling giggled happily, hoping that what he said would cheer her up as the math teacher walked in...

Corona heard Sterling's comment about being good at math and biology, Corona then shuffled her hooves a little. "Well that makes my goal a little less glamorous. I'm working to become one of the wonderbolts and I'll do anything to show them that I've got what it takes." Corona giggled at Sterling's next comment and thought it was quite cute of him to make that offer. "That's really sweet Sterling. I've never been a student of a student before." Corona gave a cheeky smile.

 

"All right everypony settle down and let's get started on today's work. I'll be your teacher for this semester Mr. Casio." The teacher was a tall green stallion with a short dark green mane and tail. He was wearing a plaid vest over a white dress shirt making some of the students giggle.

Sterling giggled at what Corona said back to him. Sure she didn't like math or biology as much as he did, but at least she wanted to be his student. It was hopefully for him another step in the right direction in the right direction in their friendship...

 

Sterling looked at his math teacher and he began to wonder why he was wearing a dress instead of the usual suit... It was certainly abnormal, and he remembered his parents telling him about ponies like him, but he had no idea that he would have to be taught by one... He just stared at Mr. Casio with a weird look wondering about his dress...

Corona just looked at their teacher baffled at what she saw trying terribly to hold in her laughter. The other students weren't doing so well and started busting out laughing. It was then that Corona saw a smile appear on his face. He bit the vest and with a loud tear he tore off the dress and vest reviling a tiki button up shirt. "Ah that's much better. Well now that I've gotten everyponies attention and lightened the mood in here please turn to page 41 and we'll start our lesson." Corona opened her book and followed along as they went through their lesson for the day.

Sterling gave a sigh of relief when the teacher merely dismissed the cries of laughter heard from the whole class. Sterling was finding it hard to focus on his homework because something like Mr. Casio wasn't something he saw everyday. Why did he want to wear... that to class? Sterling began to take down notes as Mr. Casio began to teach, but he continued to look at Mr. Casio with a weird look and with intrigue...

Corona worked along with the rest of the students having a small bit of trouble with some of the problems but once Mr. Casio stopped by to give her a hand she was able to continue. The class went by like normal with Mr. Casio giving them a small page of problems to work on for the next morning. The bell rang for the end of class, Corona put her books back into her saddlebag and headed back to her locker. Corona made it back to her locker and saw something hanging on her locker door, she quickly tore the paper off and headed to Biology quickly taking a seat and hiding herself behind her wings.

Sterling worked hard on the math problems that he was assigned for both class and homework. Sterling's talent and work rate allowed him to zoom through all of the math problems with ease. Once math class was over, Sterling quickly packed his belongings and walked to his locker which was just to the right of the math classroom. He placed his math textbook into his assigned locker, knowing that he wouldn't need it again.

 

Sterling then got up and trotted to his next class, albeit with a lot of teasing directed at him. It was for the earlier incident where he slipped on a banana peel, and it hurt. Sterling then responded angrily to the ponies,

 

"Well it'd be more appropriate to call you all klutzes for not taking out the trash!" Sterling's words meant nothing to the ponies teasing as they teased all the louder. Sterling let out a loud grunt before he moved back towards the biology class. He was glad to have entered first to the class because he didn't want to hear anymore of the teasing.

Corona could see more students piling into the classroom and that's when she saw Sterling coming. Quickly she whipped away the tears that were in her eyes. Regaining her composure, Corona smiled when she saw Sterling take a seat next to her at the same Biology table. "Hey there stranger long time no see. It seems like ages since we saw each other." Corona giggled, she could tell that Sterling was a little frustrated over something. She wanted to make him smile anyway that she could.

Sterling was still feeling disgruntled as he walked into the classroom. Why did he have to be so clumsy to start the school day? Why did ponies have to take note of every little mistake he did? Just as he was about to sit close to the front, he noticed Corona calling out to him. He quickly looked upwards and rushed to sit by her at the back for biology class. Sterling giggled at what Corona said. It really did feel like an eternity since they saw each other. Sterling smiled and replied,

 

"Yeah it did... I dunno why, but I sure like being with you! I can't wait until biology starts! Learning about the natural world is just... really cool!" It was hard for Sterling to contain his excitement. Biology was his favourite class, and the other students began to take notice, giggling among themselves at how much of a nerd Sterling was. Luckily, Sterling didn't hear them as he continued to giggle happily at the thought of learning biology.

Corona giggled at seeing how excited Sterling was getting about being in Biology, but she thought it was really cute and it did make her smile. "I'm not much into biology. To me it's just a bunch of weird goopey stuff that comes out to something more complicated. Now sports are more my thing." Corona pulled out her sketchpad and started to draw waiting for the teacher to show up for the start of class.

Sterling looked at Corona taking out her sketch pad as the biology teacher walked into class. Her name was Ms. Green and she looked just as kind as Mr. Casio. Just... with normal apparel. Sterling turned towards the teacher before looking back at Corona as she began to draw. Sterling looked at it with intrigue and remained frozen in that position, admiring whatever she was drawing. Sterling couldn't draw even if it was to save his life. So seeing Corona draw so smoothly and artistically left him stunned...

Corona continued drawing until she saw the teacher come into the room to start class. Corona put away her pencils revealing what looked to be the start of a very famous pony. The body was slender with beautiful wings that angled almost at 90 with a black splotch on her flank. Corona then shut her sketch pad and tucked it into her saddlebag for safe keeping until the next time she would get a chance to draw. Corona had noticed Sterling watching her as she drew. "Wow I didn't know that my drawing was that good." Corona giggled blushing a little with embarrassment.

Sterling noticed Corona blushing when she noticed that Sterling was looking at her with admiration as she draw. He quickly put himself back to his seat when Corona looked at him. At least she was giggling. It made Sterling feel slightly better about looking over her back creepily.

 

"Sorry about that. I was just in awe of your drawing skills. I'm a terrible artist. I'm an awesome pianist though!" Sterling bounced back with a beam in his face. It sure looked like Corona was going to be a very close buddy to him after all...

Corona smiled at the way Sterling was acting when he saw her drawing and his compliment made her even happier. "Thank you Sterling but I'm not that great of an artist. I mean it's not even my special talent. I'm more impressed by you Sterling. You're a pianist and you're big into biology and math." Corona chuckled. "I wish I was as smart as you are Sterling." Corona listened as the teacher started her lesson for the day.

(Sorry for the late reply! I was embroiled in a rehearsal for a Christmas program!)

 

Sterling chuckled when Corona felt giddy about the compliment she received from him. Sterling didn't care whether Corona was an artist of not. She was surely a better drawer than he ever would be. And he showed that in his reply,

 

"Corona... I'm just as impressed by you because you're still pretty skilled with drawing even though your talents are elsewhere. We're both the same in the sense that we have multiple talents." Sterling then pondered about Corona's special talent, so he asked with a whisper just as the biology teacher walked in and began class,

 

"Corona... what IS your special talent then?"

Corona smiled hearing Sterling's compliment listening as Ms. Green talked about the lesson letting them know that they would be working to make potions today. Corona let Sterling's question sit for a bit while they started working on their group potion. Corona poured a little too much of one liquid in causing a small blast and sending smoke in her face making her cough. "As for my special talent I could tell you but what fun would that be. Watch the sky tonight when the moon is high, Princess Luna should be having a full moon tonight." Corona gave a mischievous smile before going back to work.

 

(It's cool I understand things like that come first so no rush )

Sterling looked at Corona with concern when the potion blew up on her face when she tried to concoct one. He then chuckled lightly before Corona replied to his question about her special talent. He could see that Corona was leaving him hanging about her special talent, and he couldn't ask her anymore questions since class already started.

 

As the class went on, the teacher talked about the uses of the potions that they were using and how they affected the well-being of its drinker. He was intrigued with all the potions and he wrote about them eagerly. Sterling learned of potions that could kill, potions that could cure ailments, and potions that could even transform things. It was things like this that left him wondering how these potions actually worked. Was there something inherently scientific about them? He could only ponder as the class went on...
