Official Leaving/Returning Thread?

There's been a couple "leaving" threads on the forum that I've noticed, which usually means a lot of drama that doesn't always need to be quite so public. There's nothing really wrong with people talking about personal issues or why they are leaving, but having so many similar threads is overkill and crowds the forum.

On another forum I used to frequent, there was an official leaving/returning thread for just such a reason. If someone was going to leave the site for an extended period of time, they would post in that thread, and then leave shortly after. And if they ever decided to return, they would announce their return in the same thread.

So that's my suggestion. Other forums have stricter rules that specify no one is supposed to ever talk about leaving the forum, but I feel that is beyond overkill. But its up to the mods to decide if any change at all is necessary; there's only been about three leaving-type topics that I've seen thus far, so it might not be a big enough deal to bother with.

People don't leave all that often, and when they do, most of them do not bother announcing it to the community in any way. It might seem a bit dramatic when you start a thread just to announce that you're leaving, but if you're an established member of the community, I think you deserve a few hours of attention to make everyone aware that you won't be visiting anymore. I feel a mega-thread for this purpose would feel impersonal by comparison, and be left unused much of the time, anyway. Those who have a lot to say before they leave will likely start a "Support" thread in Everfree Forest about it, anyway.
