Fhaolan 4,484 Posted April 4, 2014 I was under the impression that ethnic Cossacks disliked people ... hold on, I remember the word... ryazhenye? Pretending to be Cossack. It was a separate culture from the northern Rus, as I understood it. Link to comment

We don't know much about Khazars :/ The only reason why we know they existed was when they went to war against the Arabs and made an alliance with the Byzantine Empire... Link to comment

I was meaning more that there is currently a group of 'ethnic' Cossacks that are distinct from other Slavic ethnicities in Russia, and the few I've met were extremely disdainful of those who lay claim to Cossack culture without actually being born to that group. Of course, my info may be woefully out-of-date now. Link to comment

I just checked out of curiosity, and supposedly there are somewhere around 65-70 thousand ethnic Cossacks in Russia according to the Russian Census. Whether these really are ethnic Cossacks, or people just claiming to be Cossack, I have no idea. Link to comment
