I am a big fan of the English band Gorillaz. Now, I know many people have not heard of Gorillaz, so I shall a give brief synopsis.
Two people Damon Albarn, frontman of English band Blur and Jamie Hewlett, creator and artist of the comic series "Tank Girl" were watching MTV one day, and surprise surprise, it was terrible. So, to try to give their own spin on things, Jamie and Damon made a band called Gorillaz with an interesting twist.
The band consisted of fictional, animated members. None of the actual members ever appeared in music videos, or live performances, it was always the animated characters. Whether it was on a Big screen or with holograms, the cartoon characters were always seen. Never Damon. If there were guest stars, they would be the only non- animated thing on stage.
Now, all of these characters have very interesting backstories, that I'm not getting into, because this is just a top 10 list of my favorite songs, and no one here gives a crap about the story. If you DO, however, then it is all over the internet.
Now, without further ado, here are my top 10 favorite Gorillaz songs.
10: Dirty Harry.
Dirty Harry is a well-known Gorillaz songs, and was one of the first made when Gorillaz reached its...preachy period. However, the preachy period is actually one of Gorillaz' better points. And Dirt Harry is evidence of that.
Dirty Harry is a song that is Anti-war, to be more specific it is about the war in Iraq...possibly. A lot of Gorillaz songs are open to interpretation. And that is what I and many others think it's about. The lyrics are good, the beat's catchy, and that chorus is the best. The only bad thing... The rapping section is a bit weak. But other than that it is VERY good.
9: Bill Murray

Now, before you ask, a lot of Gorillaz songs are given titles because they sound cool. Which is understandable, I can't think of anything to say to describe...this. Anyway, this is a lot of fun to listen to. The meaning of this song? I don't know, but damn is it good! The beat is amazing, and it sounds a lot like...Rainbow Factory. But this came first. And the vocals are enough to send shivers down anyone's spine.
8: Every Planet we Reach is Dead.
This song...listen to that beat. listen to that voice. Listen to those lyrics. This song has people very split on the meaning. Some people believe it's about losing your soul, your humanity, and finding it again by making things right, and fixing your problem, while others believe it is about being in love, but not being loved back. it all depends on the context you take the lyrics in. What I do know, is that it's a pleasure to listen to.
7: O Green World.
This song is agreed by everyone to be about the environment. Some people believe it is about commercialism taking over the world, while and many others think it's about technology taking over. However, Commercialism would make sense, since Gorillaz has always been against doing music just for the money. However, the song itself is probably one of more ominous of the songs. That creepy...chanting I guess you could call it at the end, is pretty unnerving and that's a great feeling for a song to give me.
6: Re-Hash
Re-hash's meaning is a lot more clear. Or it is to me. I see it as a song about musicians who never grow. They stick to one genre, one form of music one instrument. They never branch out and experiment. It even talks about companies who encourage that behavior, because that style sells, and again it talks about people doing it just for money with the line "It's the money or stop." Heavy handed? Maybe. But it makes up for that with amazing music and singing.
5: 19-2000
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IUjtHf76wM
19-2000 was made when the new millennium came around. 2000. To celebrate, Gorillaz came out with a catchy song...with a somber meaning. It's about not rushing through life, and instead taking moments to sit back, and remember your past.
"The world is spinning too fast, I'm buying lead Nike shoes. To keep myself tethered to the days I've tried to lose."
The song uses an analogy to compare memories to shoes. And the the line "Get the cool shoeshine." Is comparing remembering your past, to getting your shoes shined. They're still old, but you still take care and pay attention to them. Don't..ask what the giant moose in the music video's about, though.
4:Tomorrow comes today.
There's a music video for this song, but it's an OLD one, and the animation was hideous,so, no thank you.
The music's great, the vocals give a great feeling of being lost, and tense. And the meaning...you kinda have to think about to get what it's trying to say.
In my opinion I believe it is about how fast technology has advanced. Cameras on phones, digital cameras, all of that is surrounding you. You never truly know if you're being watched, or as the song puts it,
"The digital won't let me go."
3: Dare.
Dare actually has an interesting story behind it's title. The original title was actually "There" but the guest singer's thick accent made it sound like "Dare" So, they changed the title, and we got a really awesome song with a rather...trippy video. The guest singer is good, it focuses on one of my favorite Gorillaz members, Noodle, and the music is amazing.
The meaning...eh... Some people believe it's just about having a good time and partying...while others believe it's about....masturbation.
Yeah..uh...next!
2: Clint Eastwood.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoQYw49saqc
Clint Eastwood is one of the best, and it pained me to put this at number 2. But, let's get down to it. The vocals, are some of the best. The rapping is NOT painful to listen to, and the animation in the video, is perfect. And that Goddamn guitar...I get goosebumps listening to it.
So, the meaning? I don't have a clue, but I'll try. I think it's about focusing on minor things that don't really matter instead of the big picture, and instead focus on clothes, shoes, Maybe even music. Or, as Del puts it in the song, "The hype shit!"
"You don't see me now because you don't see with your eyes, you perceive with your mind."
1: Feel Good Inc.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw8PpYBiDsc
Feel Good Inc. is one of the most popular songs ever. It's what made them extremely popular in America, and who can blame it? This is great!
So, we've got 2D rapping, that's good! And then our guests come. De La Soul! I've never listened to them, but this is making want to. They're awesome, and the rapping along with the imagery really compliments everything about this.
The meaning is extremely well done. It's about an album company called "Feel Good, Inc." That only cares about profit, and making customers, "Feel good." However, 2D believes that that shouldn't be the only purpose of music, and that music should make you feel an emotion! Not just make you happy. With a planned rebellion, 2D wonders how to do this. De La Soul considers a more violent approach, attacking them head on, and believes 2D has the power to stop them, as seen in this line.
"With your sound you kill the Inc."
However, 2D believes that things should be done more calm and peaceful instead. As you'll notice, 2D's sections are a lot more calm and quiet, while De La Soul is loud and in your face.
And those are my top 10 favorite Gorillaz songs. My favorite band, and I hope you enjoyed reading this.
