Rant # 1 - Human Ponies

blog-0261683001353883986.jpgI would not be impressed if you already knew that I would rant about this, because if you visited my latest art threads you would know that I am very mad about this situation.

Ok, when people draw ponies in human form, what do you think that are these traits that makes them more human to you? To me, having human eyes, nose, mouth, ears, hair, body (without a tail), legs, arms and mainly fingers, it's a good start but it's not enough.

What am I going with this? well, in the past days I decided to draw my first drawings of humanized ponies because they are so popular on the forums and people seems to love them. I drew Rarity to be more specific and I was really excited for the feedback and basically I got punished for portraying my views in how I see a human Rarity. My style is, let's say, a little bit more realistic than many other popular drawings of human ponies out there.

I got destroyed in the comments and when I see other artworks of humanized ponies on here that are shit, yes I said it, they are shit compared to my drawings and they still get excelent feedback because they are drawn in the typical cute, cartoony anime style that it is so popular in the fandom. That situation made me sick! Call me butthurt, envous, jealous, whatever, I am all of those and I don't care. But I don't think that giving me "criticism", which consist of finding the minimal mistake in my drawings because deep inside they don't like it is not going to help me in any way.

Then when I draw ponies, and upload them on here, almost no one gives me critique, even though I know the artwork has flaws, so OBVIOUSLY we have a problem of preference here.

To me a human pony, is a human version of the MLP character, not a furry animal with boobs (the only animal with boobs that I've accepted is Lola Bunny, she was dem sexy XD), not an anime character. I'm talking about a real person (or at least drew by some sort of realistic influence), afected by our real world.

I tend to not enjoy the humanizing, but I thought your drawings were bucking excellent.

They looked really, really good in my opinion.

I don't like the furry animals with breasts either....either a full Human or a full Pony I like.

Some people just can't stop pushing their own standards to others, you shouldn't put too much worth on their words :x

TESTIFY!

You know I back you on this 100%

I myself can enjoy a sexy lady,

and I don't find cartoon ponies attractive. So when you turn Rarity's sass into a beautiful woman.

I approve, I approve a lot.

A pretty understandable rant. Anime-style drawings are the popular thing - bandwagoners, artists, and other fans like to flock around anything that's remotely cute/sexy enough with its stamp and revel in how simple yet appealing its design can be. Not like the complexities of your recent drawing of Rarity, of course.

I appreciate the anime characters, don't get me wrong, I love them... and I like to see some human ponies, but I also like other kind of drawings, of the mane6 in a more realistic scenario.

haha Thanks mama Shank! ;)

No, it's not the forum against you. It's the fanboys and the baleful critics against you as an artist.

If they can only give you hateful messages on how their preferences is the best, while unable to hand out constructive criticisms, why should you care? :P

I understand and I'm OK with that, but why bash on other styles, fine if you don't like the style don't comment!

but still, I can say who is fanboy and who's not, but I was all by myself...and you are right, hiding what you really feel with critisism is not good

I don't think these forums are the best place for critiques anyways. Not sure what made this piece make people actually say something, but people normally like to be nice so people will usually either hear nice words, or nothing at all. I guess I tried to change that a bit only to find that it gets rather mixed results as it's pretty hard to tell how much critiquing somebody wants. I could tear art to pieces as I learn more and more about what makes art to be great, but I usually hold back a bit and only focus on what's most important.

I remember when you said that you were a fan of my works. If it means anything, I've been on the receiving end of getting an a ton amount of critical attention which everyone was too nice or just not knowledgeable enough to give earlier. Look at the description in this deviation and you can tell that I definitely also had a bit of critiquing: http://fav.me/d5gmjhg

Heh. Look at me and this thread which doesn't get any critical attention:

http://mlpforums.com/topic/37832-could-use-input-for-a-new-pixelling-style-of-mine/

...Prob because I was looking in the WRONG place to look. I could probably search up for an art site dedicated to giving and receiving critiques for the sake of improvement, but I was mainly interested in opinions the anatomical style used. I guess people were too nice.

We could all have our own reasons for drawing one particular style. We all have our own preferences. I for one like styles that sit between realism I find dull and animu that I find hardly believable. I think we also have to remember that our audience also have their own preference - they have their own sense of aesthetics.

While people do seem to have their own reasons for wanting to draw one particular way, it's probably fair to say that there may also be reasons why people like particular styles over another. Some styles are more serious, others more whimsical, and so on.

Heck, I also stupefied myself when I made a little something cute for my sis as I know that a cute art style will work the best. Here's the exact deviation: http://pix3m.deviantart.com/art/Birthday-Gift-Flutterdash-Icon-326344739

Then, I watched it turn out to be one of my more popular works and amazed myself with the fave spam I get on dA. It basically overshadowed my other individual works that the same amount of effort put into it.

I guess the biggest lesson we can learn from here is just to know what people expect if we wanna make the most out of our audience. We can draw for ourselves ans satisfy ourselves, but it seems that things are different if we're dealing with an audience.

@@Pix3M, but I wasn't seeking for critiques, and I'm aware that this is not the place to seek for REALLY usefull critiques, though in here, we have AMAZING artists.

I don't mind critiques in my art threads, but people took the situation to "critique" just to find a reason to bash on my artworks, because they don't like the style. Which I don't get, because it's supposed to be a HUMAN.

or I don't know, if for being Motion Spark, people ALREADY have high standards for me, I couldn't tell.

Yeah, there's a definite preference for anime-style over realistic style. I personally love the style. Still, your picture (I'm assuming it's Rarity in a bikini) is pretty popular. I'll be perfectly honest and say that it doesn't really appeal to my tastes (mostly because I'm not into racy images), but it is certainly a well-drawn piece that should be commended.
