Review #1. Mega Man.

Quill The Pony.

This is my first review of any game. So it may not be of any quality. So please, bear with me. Anyways, this is my review of the original Mega Man on the timeless NES. Now, the game wasn't a runaway success like its two sequels, Mega Man 2 & 3, however, it was fairly successful, just barely enough to warrant a sequel. It was originally released in 1987 in the U.S. Anyways, enough about the history of this magnificent game. On to the review. Well, what can I say? It's a great game but not the best in the series. While there are great aspects about it, there are also flaws. There were multiple aspects of the game that either made it or didn't make it into the sequels. A few aspects that were only in the original game that didn't make into the sequels are a scare system (That does nothing), items re spawn when you leave the screen and you can pause the game by hitting select. Some of the aspects that weren't in this game made it into Mega Man 2 and onwards. Such elements are Energy Tanks , Passwords, and 8 robot masters as this game has 6. That means you have to beat the game in one go. This may not be hard for Mega Man pros such as myself, however, this game is amongst the most difficult of the series. Up there with Mega Man 9, Mega Man X6 and Mega Man and Bass. That doesn't mean it's unbeatable though. It simply means Mega Man noobs shouldn't play it. The game has decent controls, now, the series has been renounced for its tight controls. But the first two games controls aren't as good as 3 and onward. Mega Man does slide quite a bit when you stop pressing the left or right D-Pad. Nothing too bad, but enough to throw off noobs. But, it shines through most NES games at the time.

Control:3/5

I know graphics doesn't make a game any better or worse. However, looking at them now, they don't look too spectacular, however, at the time, they were pretty decent, not the best looking game, but far from the worst. Most of the backgrounds are simply plain backdrops. Usually a light blue. Mega Man on the other hand, looks amazing for the NES with a whopping 5 different colors. That is a lot for early NES and NES in general. The boss and enemy sprites look pretty good for its time too.

Graphics: 3-3.5/5

The animation for any video game is even less important than its graphics. Mega Man has 3 frames of animation. That takes it above and beyond most games at its time.

Animation: 4.5-5/5

The music in the game, though not as memorable as Mega Man 2 or 3, is still okay. Cut man's theme is probably my favorite.

Music: 3/5

Now, Mega Man isn't known for its plot (Teehee. Plot) Anyways, the plot is not mentioned in the game at all. That doesn't matter as it doesn't effect gameplay. The story is as follows. There are two scientists in this age of robots. Their names are Dr.Light and Dr.Wily. They made 8 robots. Rock, Roll, Bomb man, Cut man, Guts man, Elec man, Fire man and Ice man. Dr.Wily gets mad at his colleague Dr.Light because he gets all the attention while no one acknowledges Dr.Wily. So naturally he gets angry and reprograms the latter 6 robots I mentioned. Then Rock, having a strong sense of justice, volunteers to be turned into a super fighting robot. Then Mega Man was born.

Plot:3.5/5

Over all, a great NES game that everyone should have in their collection. While it's not the best in the series. (In fact, it's my second least favorite. Only above MM4.) But still, it's an excellent game. I highly recommend you get this game.

Well. That's my first ever game review. I hope you enjoyed reading it. Please remember, it's my opinion and you don't have to agree with me. Also, can you guys tell me where I need improvement. I won't take offense. In fact, I encourage you share your criticism with me so I can improve the quality of my reviews. Up next is my review of Mega Man 3, as I don't have Mega Man 2. I know, it's blasphemous but whatever. Until Next time, goodbye.

I always felt that the original Megaman has aged poorly in both difficulty and design throughout it's lifetime. The First Wily stage in particular is still a nightmare to get to and the difficulty felt more cheap than genuine and I STILL Can't beat it(damn Yellow Devil).

Personally I feel that the remake Powered Up was everything the original was supposed to be

Mega Man was awesome.

Battle Network and Starforce ftw.

Yes. Starforce all the way! I haven't really played Battle Network but Starforce is one of my favorite branches of the Megaman series trailing only behind Megaman Zero.

Anyway, good job on your first review, Quille. Sorry it took me so long to read it, I was at work when I saw your topic about it.

Some suggestions:

Try to be a tad more objective by explaining a few more technical aspects to what you are explaining about. You did good with the NES and the colors in the game but you fell short on the music part. You say it's "not as memorable but it's okay" which is about as vague as can be. Many people read reviews to get information about a game and whether they want to get it. Even if this is a review for a very old game it doesn't change the fact that people will read it out of curiosity if they've never played the game. Go on to explain things like what type of music it is, what instruments are used (or it's trying to sound like at least, in the case of 8-bit music like Megaman's)

It's perfectly okay to be subjective, tell what your favorite parts of a game are and such, but be aware that you telling someone that it's your favorite part tells them nothing about what that part actually consists of.

And here's a bit of advice I got from someone else: Take out scoring. In most cases scoring is more or less an arbitrary number and many reviewers will actually say one thing but give a totally different score than they are trying to portray. It's hard to put opinions, feelings and views into a number. You'll do better just explaining things and perhaps ending on a "i'd recommend this to x person"

Definitely did a good job of it though. One thing I've always believed is that a reviewers love for a game should always shine through and you did that pretty well. (I don't believe it's fair to review games you hate. While loving a game is also biased it doesn't cloud your view a game as much as unbridled hatred does)

Alright. For my review of Mega Man 3 I'll try going into far more depth than I did here. Thanks for the feedback.

Good man!

Just don't feel like you HAVE to be super descriptive. It's just a pointer. You did really good with this review so even if you kept it like this you'd probably be okay anyway.
