Rewatch: Friendship is Magic Part 1
No better way to kick this new blog series off with a re-watch review on FiM's very first episode, am I right? Ahem, I'm not good at introductions so I'll just dive in....My Little Pony Friendship is Magic ep. 1: Friendship is Magic Part 1. A really bad episode review/followup by yours truly.
~
Can I just say, oh man, what a nostalgia BOMB this episode is. I honestly can't believe 2010 was ten years ago...has it really been that long? Anywho...it all starts with a book. The Book. What would you call this book? The Book of FIM? Book of Pony? Not sure but, this is where the epic journey all begins. A flip of a few pages and BOOM the brony fandom was born! Okay maybe not quite like that but you get the idea.
So, we open this book and we get this lovely illustration of Equestria. I love it. The rainbows really tie it all together, don't you think?
I mean for real, that illustration is so well done I can almost smell the fresh air I would be inhaling if I was standing there. ANYWAY moving on from that...
Ah yes the regal sisters! This also tells us that Tia's mane was pink way back when....interesting. Here I was thinking all the fan art of young Celestia with pink hair was just a fan thing. No apparently it's a canon thing. Nice.
Evil horse alert!! Mayday mayday! Nightmare Moon hath arrived!
For real though that's some good art. The dark pink/maroon colored background really is a nice touch....okay, I need to stop being Miss Illustration Critic now. I hear ya. Let's move this train along and skip right to....everyone's favorite nerd! The one, the only, Purple Smart!
...aka Twilight Twinkle! .....Sparkle! I mean Sparkle.
Just look at her, so young. So full of potential. So...antisocial, and without wings. But, we all still love her this way don't we. Now I feel like I should mention here that while Trixie is my favorite unicorn, unicorn Twily is a close second. She's adorkable, has a cool color scheme, and all-around just super duper like-able.
Ah yes, these girls. Out of these three Lemon Hearts has always been a favorite of mine. Not sure why to be honest with you I guess her color scheme is appealing and later on in Season 5 she's shown to have a really cute voice. Just sayin.
Tsk tsk Twilight, you should really get out more. If I had someone invite me to a party like that I'd be all over it! You can't pass an opportunity like that up! And think about Moondancer here! Do it for Moondancer! You silly purple book horse! Dammit.
........
That's an ouch.
And here we have another blow to poor Moondancer (If you don't know what I'm talking about refer yourself to Season 5 episode 12 newbies).
Now would you look at this. Notice how different unicorn magic looked back then. It was also pretty loud. *sparkly glimmery sound effects intensify*
Just gonna leave this here because it's too funny:
Ahem. Twilight looks super cute in this shot. Not sure why.
Now, can I just point something out. Just imagine having a window this big, and the sun beating down through it like that. I mean doesn't it get scorching hot in that library? Yikes.
I'm just gonna move things along to the when Twily meets the rest of the mane 6. Starting with this wild pink ball of energy we all know as Pinkie Pie. What a great first hello (not really but hey it's better than no introduction at all).
We get more of Pinkie later. Next up we are introduced to our favorite country girl, Element of Honesty, and Rainbow Dash's girlfriend, Applejack! My favorite character ever besides Rainbow Dash, I love everything about this pony. She's hardworking, down to earth, family oriented, sassy, has a competitive streak that makes for an epic dynamic with RD, and, and.....okay, I'll stop there before I spend an hour listing off all the reasons I love and appreciate Applejack.
We are then introduced to three other very important members of the Apple family. This big hunk of a...stallion, the strong and dependable (and honestly too quiet for my taste) Big Macintosh.
The sweet and adorable, playful little Apple Bloom. This young-un is my favorite out of the CMC, and most relatable to myself (or at least how I was when I was younger haha). The bow in her mane makes her all the more cute!
Finally, Granny Smith. Super old has to be at least like 200 years old considering.
Okay okay okay moving on to a very VERY important scene here....enter Rainbow Dash! My spirit animal, Best Pony of all the Best Ponies, most relatable character in the series. I love this girl and I have loved her since I first got into pony so many years ago. She was my first favorite character and has been ever since. Sadly Dash is also one of the most hated characters, never been able to understand that. Sure she has flaws, but just like anyone else. And come on I mean really folks....you can't deny how awesome her mane is. Yes, even when covered in mud!
For those of you who don't think RD is cute, behold the following screenshots and tell me if you still think she's not cute!
Alright I promise I'll move on now. The meeting with Rarity. This is the part where I....*yawns* WHOOPS I mean...well it's not that I think Rarity is a bad character, she just never caught my interest as much as others.
I can't say the same for Spike though holy moly. He fell for her and he fell hard.
I'm just going to leave this here as well....for you to take out of context like I did:
We are then introduced to Fluttershy. Again, a character who never got much interest from me but still a good character all the same. I will agree Flutters is cute, but also overrated not gonna lie here.
And of course we get better scenes of meeting with Pinkie Pie.
Now would you look here. I'm very disappointed in Twilight for purposefully missing out on what sounds like a killer party downstairs, especially since Spike comes bursting in the door with a lampshade on his head. Summer Sun Celebration must be like the pony equivalent of New Years I'm guessing.
I've always loved this shot, when Twily looks up at the moon and it reflects in her eyes. Just very aesthetically pleasing and dreamy-looking.
Alrighty so Imma just skip to the part where evil moonbutt horse aka Nightmare Moon makes her appearance. Anyone but me notice how much she laughs? Like, wow. MWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA damn girl. She is so majestic looking though I'll give her that, dark and evil and majestic. The stuff pretty nightmares are made of.
Obligatory first AppleDash scene. From here on out Applejack is seen grabbing onto RD's tail on a regular basis, I swear man she's obsessed. Or maybe Dash's hair really tastes like Skittles. Either way.....
The epeisode closes out with Nightmare Moon, again, LAUGHING. What did I tell ya? She must be pretty damn happy. I mean she just escaped the moon after being trapped there for a thousand years, I guess I can't blame her for laughing so much. I would be too.
The swirling cloud of stars and lightning was kinda cool.
Well well, that will conclude my very bad episode followup/review of MLP FIM Season 1 ep. 1, Friendship is Magic, Part 1. Go ahead and comment or whatever you like below, with your thoughts and what not. This took me a lot longer to write up than I had planned, after a busy work weekend I couldn't find much time. Part 2 to this episode will be coming....soon. Whenever I can get to it (I promise it won't be that long though).
