Tone Indicator List

So, with the digital era evolving quickly, there are so many things that can lead to misunderstandings and discomfort when trying to communicate with one another. I am not sure how popular these are, but using tone indicators can be useful to properly communicate.

This is just my first post for online etiquette. It is not required here and simply offered as an option to assist with the "flavor" of text.

"fake" is "Look at this real-life unicorn. /f" That one stood out since some of my best friends ARE unicorns!

Usually people are mentioning that they are feeling more comfortable if you use tone tags to talk them.

I have seen several mentions of tone tags in the Internet but really used them in conversation only once, so I consider them pretty rare.

What is this?

It helps to communicate the "tone" of your sentence.

For example:

AHHHHHH THERE'S A GIANT CAKE IN MY ROOM EATING MY HOUSE /jk

(this tells it is just a joke and not someone actually believing it)

"omg, check out this REAL LIFE conspiracy! /f"
("f" for "fake" to show it's not serious)

"oh my gawwwwd.... Strawberry chocolate milk! MY FAVORITE!!" /s
("s" for sarcasm, so please do not send me packages of strawberry milk) D:
... jk

Etc etc. ;)

Yes, I rarely see it as well. But I have noticed a lot of confusion and conflicts from exchanges. I know people personally so I understand the context. But I've seen, even in old time, moderators warn someone over a joke. LOL Back in the day. Worry not. Modern Moderators take the time to care and know the userbase here. ^_^

I will ALWAYS endorse stuff like this! :pinkie:

It's not always necessary in most situations, no. But SO many people forget that tone and intent do not translate on cold, hard, digital text messages. How you said it, the tone you intended, does not translate to the way others read it. So any clue you can give people is ALWAYS helpful. If you're joking, make it obvious that you're joking. If you're not being serious, make sure others know you're not being serious. Etc. Because if you don't make it clear, people won't know.

the only ones of these I've seen are /j

I want "s1/2" to be one - so I rawr about a pol thing, but don't take the tone as 100% as it seems but also don't take it 0%, just half

for instance

Quote

"Trump blah blah"

"Nuu Trump yay yay /srs"

"naw mare, I was 1/2! I wish I had used a tone indicator! /1"

/1 would mean 100%

Yes! This is a very real problem on the internet, misinterpretations of what someone is saying happens frequently because the lack of tone and nonverbal communication! Facial expressions especially! This is why emojis and gifs come in handy too!

Thanks for posting this!
