My Season 3 Review

Harmonic Revelations

Everybody has been doing one of these. So I took a gulp of air and said to myself "Let's do this!". I figuratively commanded the very world to cease and allow me to thoughtfully commentate on the entire season. So I did just that, and it's right here, in it's entirety. I have a general review summary plus a by-episode version for you picky readers.

So, let's get right to it, I suppose i'll start with the by-episode version, for convenience on both my part and yours, so bear with me and just deal with my less-than-adequate and possibly sarcastic and cynical commentary begin! I may eventually back track and review seasons 1 and 2 as well, so stay tuned!

Episodes 1 + 2: The Crystal Empire Parts 1 and 2

This episode had a lot to offer. I suppose for starters, I can always say that a new villain is good. Right from the get-go we are promised an amazing. Which is great, right? It should be. The Failure Success song sums up these episodes, because it's a half good and half not good type of thing. These episodes delivered in the field of comedy, I did laugh quite a few times. What it did not accomplish was drama. It tried to take itself seriously, but it ended up forfeiting all of it's seriousness.

I suppose Sombra was an okay idea for a villain. A good idea. In some ways, that idea never even reached fruition, since he has such short screen time that you might assume he was just a cameo as opposed to what the episodes were about. He was disappointing, to say the least of it. I was expecting something amazing, I got way less than I thought I would from that ending. And Cadence didn't help the seriousness factor either with her epic TOSS.

Overall Rating: 6/10

Episode 3: Too Many Pinkie Pies

Yay, a Pinkie Pie episode. That wasn't a sarcastic yay either, I believe Pinkie Pie episodes are underdone, so it goes without saying I was excited for this one. So, I sat back and watched it. First thing I noticed was that the set up made it believable and a relatable problem, not being able to be with all of your friends at once. It's a problem that most of us go through at least once. So they took a non-believable approach to a believable problem, not something that common, but not something bad either.

I also found the rhyme that Pinkie Pie remembers that told her about the reflection pool to be cute, to say the least about it. Also, am I the only one who was impressed by the lighting effects that were used in the cave with the pool itself? I think this episode clearly shows some of the improvement between the first season and third season, demonstrating the improvements in animation style. I don't really have much more to say about this episode, it was funny, but it's plot wasn't in depth enough to form a valid evaluation of the story. What I'm saying is that it was a simple episode.

Overall Score: 8.5/10

Episode 4: One Bad Apple

I didn't enjoy this one too terribly much. I don't know what it was about it that made me so annoyed. I guess the whole bullying thing was a bit of a personal subject for me, since I grew up as a kind of outcast in my own right. So I guess that has something to do with my dislike of it, since it portrays bullies in a positive light (At least in my view). I also find Bab's accent annoying, I've never liked New York Accents.

The other thing I disliked about it was that it's songs weren't very good. Bad Seed was probably my least favorite song out of Season 3, and there are reasons for that. I guess the one redeemable thing about this is that it gave the Cutie Mark Crusaders more screen time, something they could always use.

It was a meh episode.

Overall score: 5/10

Episode 5: Magic Duel

When I first heard about this episode I was like "A Trixie episode? Man the hatches, Firebolt is going to be happy about this!" and well, would you look at that. It played out like I expected it to, it was a fun episode more than anything. It dealt with serious issues and did seem geared more towards the brony community considering the negative themes it dealt with. I liked it, because personally, I like Trixie. She is a good character that I can relate to.

If I had do name something I did not like about this episode, it would be that I dislike Snips and Snails because generally they are annoying characters.

Overall Score: 8/10

(I'm skipping to the finale, mostly because I don't have much to say about the other episodes. I liked Keep Calm and Flutter on, but I don't have much to say about episodes other than the Finale)

Episode 13: Magical Mystery Cure

This episode was either just another episode, a bad idea on Hasbro's part, or the beginning of the end times, it all depended on who you were talking to about it. However, when it was released, you either loved it, liked it, disliked it and sucked it up, or turned into Chris Crocker and went completely apeshit about it. Either way, I liked the episode. In fact, it was my FAVORITE episode of this season.

Where to start when talking about this amazing episode? How about the fact that the BEST pony got a song. If you don't know who I think the best pony is, you're either apathetic about it, reading the wrong blog, or horribly, horribly drunk. Either way, she did get one, and a rather great one at that. She was like LALALLALALALALALA and I was like LALALALALA right along with her. That happened, yes, I was like LALALLALALALA for the entire song and it was amazing.

Also, the 3D effects were quite amazing! I especially was impressed by the scene with Twilight at the window. It was impressive! Also, I laughed a lot of times through the episode. This episode succeeded where The Crystal Empire failed, in that this episode managed to be both funny and dramatic.

Twilicorn was a good thing, I like how she looks, and I like the entire aspect of it. I don't get why people are in such a panic over it, calm down.

Overall Score: 10/10

GENERAL OVERVIEW TIME!!!

Alright, so if there are some points I'd like to make about Season 3, it would be these:

  • Spike episodes are a BIG no-no
  • Spike EPISODES ARE A VERY BIG NO!
  • Applejack is no longer a background pony
  • Best Pony got a song (WOOHOO, Celestia FTW)
  • I like Peanut Butter

So yeah, Season 3 was okay, I guess everything but the Spike episodes were amazing.

I like Spike's episodes...

Haha... Just kidding. You forgot how best mane 6 needed more attention. Rarity needs *much* more attention.

Don't discredit Applejack like that.
