The definition of being "normal"
It has been another long time without much activity on my part on the forums... I really gotta get back to normal. Anyway, how's it going, beautiful people?~
---
Recently, I've been thinking to myself a lot about this subject due to something that happened a few weeks ago while I was playing an online game, using my dandy Pinkie Pie avatar. As usual, a player tried to get on my nerves with the good ol' "gay brony" argument, only this time, I answered.
I failed to take a screenshot of the chat box at the time, but it went something like this:
Guy: The dude's got a pony pic, but whatever...
Me: ...What's wrong with my pic?
Guy: It's a pony.
Me: [sarcasm] Well, you've got an anime girl pic, but whatever...
Guy: ?
Me: See? Doesn't feel good, does it?
Guy: At least mine is normal.
This moment reminded me of how much I hate when the word "normal" is used in this context of judging the others. I honestly don't understand how one can have the right to say if someone is "normal" or not based on something so silly such as a certain passion towards a TV show, or even based on anything else for that matter. It's just stupid.
What does it mean to be "normal" for a teenager like me anyway? It most likely means that I'm forced to like cars, sports, pop culture, InsertGenericTeenagerPassionHere, and all of the mainstream stuff in order to be accepted by my teenager buddies and by the society as a whole... WHY!? I didn't want to be afraid of saying that I like My Little Pony, but I am afraid, because I know I will be cruelly judged by the others if I do, because apparently it's something not considered normal!!
At the same time though, I really don't mind being called weird since I would much more hate being called normal. I despise when this word is used to describe someone because It's just so wrong. Being normal means that you've fallen victim of the mainstream media just like most people. It means that you like and dislike things never based on your own opinion, but on the majority's opinion.
Our society has built over the years this oh-so-dumb rule that decides what is normal and what is weird depending on your age and sex. It's true that we've been breaking those taboos little by little, such as "blue is a boy's color and pink is a girl's color", but we still have very much to learn about accepting the other's tastes and choices.
I don't know if I will live to see the day when people are free to enjoy whatever they want without going through such prejudice...
