  2. Here's the link: http://www.newsarama.com/19870-princeless-creator-jeremy-whitley-is-friends-forever-with-my-little-pony-at-idw.html Also, I would like to personally recommend these comics if you haven't checked them out. They're great. For those who don't like links, here's the interview: PRINCELESS Creator Jeremy Whitley is FRIENDS FOREVER with MY LITTLE PONY at IDW by Zack Smith, Newsarama Contributor Date: 20 December 2013 Time: 04:30 PM ET Jeremy Whitley knows a thing or two about all-ages comics as the writer/creator of the Eisner-nominated fantasy series Princeless from Action Lab Entertainment. Now, he’s taking on another beloved all-ages property with the second issue of My Little Pony: Friends Forever from IDW. In Whitley’s story, the Cutie Mark Crusaders – the young ponies still searching for the unique skills that will give them their cutie marks – find a new way to seek their talent with some magical help from Discord, the John “Q from Star Trek” de Lancie-voiced trickster. Horror is likely to follow. We spoke with Whitley about his story, MLP fandom, his other projects, and more. Newsarama: Jeremy, how did this story come about? Jeremy Whitley: It was kind of roundabout. I had been trying to get some work at IDW off and on for a while, but my timing was always a little bit off. Then, this year at Denver Comic-Con I met Tony Fleecs, who was working on the Pony books and it turned out was a fan of my creator-owned book Princeless at Action Lab. Tony asked me if I'd ever thought about working on My Little Pony and of course my answer was “yes.” He put in a good word for me, and as it turned out, they were just starting to put together plans for the new series. I pitched some ideas and found a few that were winners. Nrama: What's fun about writing these Crusaders, along with Discord? Whitley: Discord is fun because he is a creature of pure chaos. When he's around, anything can happen and usually does. Almost nothing is off the table with him. As for the Cutie Mark Crusaders, they make a fun natural fit, because they're always looking to plug themselves into new situations. They are looking to experience everything and with Discord, that can actually happen. Nrama: Surely, the Cutie Mark Crusaders must inevitably fail in their attempt to earn their hind-defining branding in this tale, as their goals are unlikely to be achieved in a tie-in book. What then are the great challenges in crafting a tale that cannot end in the desired triumph? Whitley: Well, that's true of pretty much every Cutie Mark Crusaders story, isn't it? If they go their cutie marks, they wouldn't be the Cutie Mark Crusaders any more. I'm of the same school as Katie Cook on this question – I kinda hope they never get their cutie marks. The thing is, the story is not about achieving their goal, but how the trial of it changes them and how they change the world and characters around them. This may be my experience as a father of a two year old speaking, but watching kids in your life grow often teaches you as much about yourself as they learn about themselves. Also, kids rarely actually get what they want, but they're always ready for the next thing. Nrama: What's it been like working with IDW/Hasbro on this project? Whitley: It's been amazing and, dare I say, easy. My editor, Bobby, knows the brand really well and has a great feeling for what Hasbro wants and doesn't want. We did some early editing on the pitch and script level and the final product sailed through approval from Hasbro. I couldn't even think of anything to complain about if I wanted to. Nrama: And tell us about your artist Tony Fleeces – what does he bring to this project? Whitley: Tony's got it all. He's got skill. He's got enthusiasm. Heck, he brought me into this and then asked to work with me. Anybody who's seen his work knows I'd be a fool to pass up a chance like that. And you'd be hard pressed to find an artist more on top of his pony game than Tony. The man knows his stuff. He's not a bad looker either. Nrama: Why do you feel My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has made such a major impression in popular culture the last few years? Whitley: I think, against all odds, it's what the culture wanted and needed. It started as a way to relaunch a toy line, but what it's become is something so much greater. It's a show that both adults and kids can enjoy. It has something for everyone. It's positive without being dumbed down. But the real great thing about it is that it's a series that meets young girls where they are and speaks an important message through the very existence of its characters. The Mane 6, as they're known, have girls of every type from sporty to bookish to fashionable to hard working. It gives the message that there is no right or wrong way to be a girl and that it's more important to be yourself and that when you do that, friends will find you. And beyond that, you can be friends with all sorts of people, whether they're just like you or not. Nrama: Please, for the love of God, explain the “Bronies” to me. I went out last summer with a “Pegasister” and I saw some fan art that...that...(breaks down)...I can't unsee! I mean, it's unnatural! These are grown men! Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to my Adventure Time art collection. Whitley: I think it's important to separate the perception of “Bronies” from the actual bronies. These are guys who like a cartoon which is, ostensibly, made for children. A lot of us, and I would argue the more mature ones of us, are all right with liking things that are made for kids. For instance, there's this weird little British sci-fi show about an alien who travels through time and space in a phone booth with his buddies and solves mysteries. I don't know if you're familiar with it, but people are pretty into that show. You take away the argument that it's for kids and the only issue left is that the characters are pink and purple and (some) Bronies can grow a beard. Personally, I'm against the idea of gendered entertainment and I think people of any age should be able to like what they like regardless of what colors it comes in. Now, the fan art is a different issue. Any fandom has a certain ten percent of fans who are outspoken, eccentric, and often express their love for a thing in troubling ways. Rule 34 is very real. VERY REAL. Don't Google it. So, if you can't enjoy a thing just because there is disturbing images of it out there, we're all out of luck. Nrama: Also, it's been bothering me for years how the ponies have been able to dress themselves and construct complex machinery without opposable thumbs. Admittedly, there is a subculture of telekinetic unicorns in this society, but what of this rest? This line of thinking has also ruined Cars for me. Whitley: Two things. My one learning experience when working on this script was that the machinery can't be too complex. My plan for a Days of Thunder reference got scrapped by the non-existence of cars in Equestria. The other thing is Velociraptors. Think of all the trouble they caused without opposable thumbs. You can ask Robert Muldoon what happens when you underestimate Velociraptors...no wait, you can't! Nrama: Do tell us of the plans for the new edition of Princeless and what is coming on up with that series. Whitley: The brand spanking new January Previews (for March releases) has a preview for our beautiful new collected edition of Volume 1. You get all four issues of the first series, at full size, with a gorgeous new cover by M. Goodwin. It would make the perfect Christmas gift! Unfortunately it's coming out in March, so you'll have to buy it for someone for Easter. Not long behind that, you'll be seeing info about the new volume! Princeless Book 3: The Pirate Princess will be hitting stores in the spring with art by the amazing Soojin Paek and the continuation of last year’s epic Free Comic Book Day story! It is going to be a great time! Nrama: What else is coming up for you? Whitley: Well, I have another issue of My Little Pony: Friends Forever in the pipeline as well as several more pony pitches in the early stages. I also have pitches in progress for a big fantasy story with one of my Princeless Short Stories contributors, Jessi Sheron and I'm working on my first actual superhero story with my frequent collaborator Jason Strutz. I'm also working on a spy book, a book about luchadores, and I have another pitch in at Oni that I'm waiting to hear back on. Right now, I'm ready for anything, it's just a question of which companies want to publish my books! Nrama: Anything else you'd like to talk about that we haven't discussed yet? Whitley: Yeah, where on Earth is Iron Fist? That's one of my favorite characters and he doesn't have a book coming out right now. And now with Fearless Defenders being wrapped up, Misty Knight is off the shelf too. If Marvel is just waiting for somebody to write a Danny and Misty book, I'm available for that. I'd really like to see those two make a comeback. Or did you mean about stuff I'm doing? Oh, no, that about covers it for now. But seriously, I'm gonna need for that book to happen. Check out Whitley’s My Little Pony: Friends Forever story in February from IDW.
  3. I didn't dislike the idea of Alicorn Twilight, I just disliked how the episode where she became an Alicorn went down. The pacing was off. And some things didn't make sense. Regardless, I felt it was a very strong pair of episodes, and I think seeing her get used to her wings and princess duties will be good.
  4. If it improves my hearing, that would be pretty awesome. I mean who wouldn't want dramatically better hearing? Assuming they would be better, of course!
  5. This is my first MLP fanfiction. Hope you like it! Feedback is always appreciated, negative or positive. "Atom Lily" By: Christopher Goss It was a beautiful day in the Everfree Forest. The sunlight danced on the leaves, celebrating in the early morning dew that collected upon them. Finally, the leaf gave way to the weight of the collected dew and it raced off the edge of the leaf and downward through the air to finally land on the flank of a mare standing just below. The mare giggled, and looked up at the tree. She placed a hoof on the rough brown trunk and closed her eyes. A soft green light illuminated both her body and the tree. She could see within the tree on a microscopic level and could see small issues plaguing the tree. But as the light illuminated the tree, she prompted damaged cells to regenerate or rejuvenate themselves. "There you go, Mister Tree," she whispered, patting the trunk with her hoof. In the distance, the young mare could hear the sound of a rushing waterfall. She was deep within the Everfree Forest, and quite far away from the hustle and bustle of Ponyville. Excited, the young mare cantered off in the direction of the waterfall. She zigged and zagged through the thick flora that decorated the forest floor. Every once in awhile she would pass a small forest animal. Like a bird or a rabbit. She did not pester them in her haste to make it to the waterfall. Finally she passed through a particularly thick clump of bushes and slowly walked into a clearing. The roar of the water was heaviest here, and she could see that this was where the waterfall ended up. The water washed from a high cliff and down into a pool of water that then rushed away in a small babbling brook. "Wow, it's beautiful." And beautiful it was. Because a small rainbow formed over the rainbow. It was quite like magic. Slowly, she walked over to the edge of the small pool of water and looked within. She could see a distorted image of herself painted on the surface of the water. She was a soft shade of pink with a dash of violet mane amd bushy tail. Her name was Lilium, an Earth Pony. This was how she often spent her days- discovering all of the natural magic that made up the Everfree Forest. It was a special little haven for the adult mare who had spent most of her days alone. Lilium lowered her snout to the water and began lapping up some of the water. It was then that the cry of pain lanced through her ears like lightning. Her head raised up swiftly, and she looked around in alarm. Her ears twitched, but the mare could not discern where the sound was coming from. The voice pleaded, "help me....help me....please.....I don't...have much time....please, help me...." Lilium cried, "where are you? I don't know where you are! How can I help you?" The voice, fainter this time, pleaded, "help.....I'm....follow....the scent...." Lilium groaned, but she raced off, her snout high in the air as she breathed in the familiar scents of the Everfree Forest. But mingling with the familiar scents was one that she hadn't smelled before. Her frantic pace caused her to barrel through plants, and this caused her to recieve several scratches, but she ignored it for the time being. The scent was getting stronger and stronger. Finally, she slowed down, eyes widening as she saw what lay fifty paces ahead. A large tree had fallen. The branches that the tree had once raised so high and proudly were splintered and broken, beaten and battered. The trunk of the tree was scorched black as if something fiery had crashed into it. But the most unsettling part of the image was the small creature laying on the fallen tree. Lilium couldn't quite tell what it was. It was a soft shade of green and looked rather viny, as if its flesh were comprised of hundreds of vines. The creature had wickedly long fangs and protuberant scarlet eyes with jet black irises. As she got closer, she began to realize the creature wasn't sitting on the fallen tree, it was connected! The viny flesh seem to extend and flow naturally into the hulking trunk of the tree where it was scorched black. She could hear the pitiful being breathing in painful raggged breaths as if it was laboring to even do that. In all her years of living in Equestria, Lilium had never seen anything quite like it. That being said, Lilium could tell that the creature was dying a slow, painful death. As if afraid of what the creature might do, her hooves slowed her approach and she hesitated. The fangs caused her fear. The creature blinked, it's chest rising and falling sharply. "Do....do not fear me...." The creature raised a viny hand. The hand ended in weird wiggling extensions that she had never seen before. They sort of resembled the phalanges of an ape. "What....what happened to you? And....why are you attached to this fallen tree?" "I was-" The creature began to cough violently. A purple liquid oozed from the corner of its mouth. The coughing subsided. "Come closer....let me....show..." The creature couldn't finish the sentence as another sharp coughing fit cut it off. Lilium took a deep breath and approached the creature. She stopped about a hoof or two away, and then hesitantly lowered her head. She felt the creature place a viny hand on her head. She gasped as a sudden flood of images filled her mind. Lilium watched as the creature seemed to be born in some sort of plant. Lilium soon realized that the creature had been born within this very tree. She observed it growing bigger and bigger until dug through to get out of the large tree. But something had gone wrong. Before the creature emerged from the interior of the tree, something struck the tree. There was a flash. Then....nothing. Lilium deduced that it must have been lightning that had caused the scorch mark and that it had also been that same bolt of lightning that had likely caused the tree to fall. There had of course been a storm the night before. But the images hadn't stopped there. She saw the creature emerge fully from the fallen trunk and position itself as it was now. It had already gotten weak and and sickly. The lightning had obviously disrupted some part of the process of it escaping the tree, and thus explained why the creature had yet to fully wrench away from what connected it to the tree. There the images died. Lilium found herself standing again in the Everfree Forest. The birds trilled and the bugs added a chorus to the medley. "....I can help....I think," Lilium whispered. She placed a hoof upon the viny forehead of the creature and closed her eyes. She could see the composition of the creature on a celluar level. And it was then that she spotted that something on a cellular level was eating the creature from within. She supposed this happened because of the weakness of the creature. A soft green light shrouded the mare, the creature, and the tree. Lilium systematically hunted and slaughtered the invasive cells and also regenerated the cells that had been lost by transforming the attacking invasive cells. She could feel strength flowing back within the body of the creature. Lilium's breath soon became pants as she expended burned through her own energy to help the creature. Finally, when her work was done, Lilium collapsed onto her back. The creature slowly sat up. Lilium saw that what connected the creature's back to the tree was a thick green chord that had been slightly severed. It was then that it struck Lilium that this creature must have been composed of plant cells. That was the only way she could have helped the creature. It was a crazy thought. "So, what is your name?" The plant creature asked her. Lilium said, "my name is Lilium, but you can call me Lily." The creature nodded, satisfied. It then reached behind it and grabbed the chord attached to its back. The chord immediately began wiggling and soon it seemed to simply pop off the back of the creature, not showing any sign it had ever been attached. Where the chord had been attached to the creature was a small circular indent, but much like the rest of the creature, it was viny there. It also showed no other signs of having been attached to the chord. Lilium, having collected her breath, got to her feet. "Well...I should get going." "Wait!" The creature slowly stood up on legs that were made of loose veins. But they worked together to form two solid legs for walking on. "My name is Exavania. Thank you for helping me. Are you....some sort of plant princess?" Lilium laughed, "Of course not. I'm a simple filly living my life helping plants. Nothing more, nothing less." Exavania seemed to ponder this. "Very well, then. But I hope to meet you again one day. I feel there is something special about you. Your affinity with plants is far from normal for even an Earth Pony." "Is it? I hadn't really thought about it." But it wasn't as if she often talked to other ponies. She mostly kept to herself as she explored the Everfree Forest. "Maybe I should go and...talk to somepony about it." Exavania nodded, "I feel that would be a good idea. In the meantime, I shall go find the Forest Mother. Thank you once again for your help Lily." "The Forest Mother?" Exavania simply stated, "she is the reason for my existence. The existence of all forests. I could take you to meet her...." Lilium thought about the offer, but she wasn't quite sure she wanted that much excitement. "No, I do believe I'm going to go to Ponyville for now and try to meet other ponies. I think it's about time I began to mingle with more of my kind to see if there's anything I can learn about myself." "Very well, Lily. I look forward to seeing you once again." Exavania bowed and began walking away. Lily trotted off in the other direction. She was confident. It was time she stopped living alone. It was time to go to Ponyville! -End
  6. Moderate to the max! That was definitely an easy one. I saw it popping up everywhere. Mostly on kotaku, so I decided to check it out. Funny enough, this just recently happened with Doctor Who, which I began watching because I saw it everywhere as well.
  7. I enjoyed the movie quite a lot, and would recommend it. I really hope they do a spinoff series, to be honest. But I can understand how some may not like it.
  8. Burnout I guess. I've played video games like a fiend essentially since I could hold a controller. True, I got massively hooked on Persona 4 and Skyrim, but that rarely happens anymore. Most times I start a game, get bored, and quit them. I've started playing Wii Sports a lot recently, however.
  9. I'd rather a spinoff episodic series, personally. And instead of highlighting the similarities like EG mostly did, highlight the differences to the pony versions. And instead of having Twilight be the main character, have Sunset Shimmer be the main character and her struggles to change after the end of EG. And maybe you see a slow, but steady, change throughout the series.
  10. And guess who is doing it? AKIRA HIMEKAWA! Akira Himekawa is actually two people, Honda and Nagano. But why is this such awesome news? Akira Himekawa is the one (two?) who did Legend of Zelda serialization based on the video games. As someone who already collects the comics, I hope this manga also makes it here. Also, sorry if this is old news! And for more information, here you go: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2013-07-14/zelda-akira-himekawa-to-draw-my-little-pony-manga
  11. My favoriute is the Ask A Ninja ninja. His videos are pretty hilarious. Check it out these videos are pretty hilarious and funny.
  12. These are two instrumentals I made and I was hoping to get some feedback (positive or negative both appreciated). "Bring It Back" "Zim Zam Zango"
  13. Yep, huge Sonic fan. I have been since Sonic the Hedgehog 2. And my wallet has Sonic on it! That being said, Sonic is my favorite character. Sonic Adventure 2 is probably my favorite game. I've never really thought about shipping. But I think the interactions of Rainbow Dash and Sonic would be pretty priceless. As for shorts, no idea.
