I’ve been told that Dune Part 2 is really good, so I took a look at Dune Part 1 to get up to speed on the story. Unfortunately it really sucks, just like the original 1984 version; over-long and boring. But this is the oddity: Dune Part 1 did poorly at the box office but Dune Part 2 is a huge hit. I’m not sure what to read into that but I’ll get caught up on the sequel when I can.

As a huge fan of the book I thought part 1 was great but Part 2 added a bunch of unnecessary crap to make it appeal more to a mainstream audience. Now I'm wondering if I was just really excited about a big budget Dune and want to read the book again.

The 1984 movie was a fun 80s movie but it made a ton of changes to the story too.

  2. I read something that had some of that recently. Basically the Aesir are more developed in mythology. The Titans are only known for being defeated by the Olympians and being gone or imprisoned so we don't think much of them. In the story one titan makes a comeback with an army and they have a ton of old school primal power.

According to MyAnimeList I've seen 150 anime in their entirety but that includes movies.

Looking through it more than sixty of those don't count. Some are movies, some are seasons or OVAs that are counted separately for some annoying reason.

You know, I never fully understood this mindset.  If signs and text are meant to be understood by the audience, why is changing them so bad? I'd understand if the words are very artistic and the editors are having a hard time matching the art style. At that point, you are messing with the art. But if it's otherwise plain text, it seems kind of redundant to give these things subtitles since you're translating the text regardless. I'm not saying one school of thought is always correct; I would just like to be a fly on the wall when these translation choices are made to see if there is a pattern or not. Have you ever seen subtitles when there's a book or a bunch of text messages on-screen? It's madness! The subs have a hard time keeping up. Can't say editing the visuals is a perfect solution, but in some cases, it might provide for a smoother experience for the audience at least.

Also, I wouldn't be too worried about hundreds of versions floating around. We live in the age of the internet. People are bound to catalogue even the smallest of differences. As long as the changes don't go into censorship territory or anything just as bad, sticking to your local version should be fine enough. The only time you'd ever want to get a variation is if it matters to you. I want to get the Japanese version of Zootopia just because of that tanuki reporter. :derp:

I just say if they start making changes they're gonna take it farther and farther. I say keep the translation as separate from the actual movie as possible so you know it's not part of the original.

Movies are visual and they really shouldn't include text messages or pages and pages of text. If it's absolutely necessary they just have to throw up a wall of captions.

And I think the age of the internet muddies things like that more than anything.

  5. I don't think changing things from the original is a good thing. Then there are going to be a hundred versions floating around and people will forget which is the original. Captions are good enough if you can't understand something in another language.

The second one is fine. Just captions and the second picture is probably from a fan caption. Anime fans know what baka means.

Is that one for MLP real? I thought it was always the pictures.

  6. I've never had Chick-fil-a but everybody I know who's been there says it's nothing special and way overpriced. Of course what isn't overpriced these days?

    They're small for a reason :orly: .

Lol, to be fair they may just be new or not well known yet.

  7. What do you say? Why do you say it? What do you think it accomplishes?

I don't say anything. I say let people deal with their bodily functions in peace.

Saying "bless you" or "gesundheit" is a phatic expression(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phatic_expression), something people say for no reason. They hear a sneeze and that just explodes out of their mouth practically like a sneeze itself. To me it's just super annoying especially when you have a sneezing fit and they have to say it after each sneeze.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) This is a new series on Netflix and the trailers looked promising. Sadly the show itself is fairly generic, highly predictable and the acting is mostly flat. The special effects are great but there’s nothing new to that; there isn’t anything we haven’t seen a zillion times. Studios seem to think they can bypass the writing stage altogether and just dazzle the audience into a receptive stupor with CG effects, but this is living proof that good entertainment doesn’t work that way. In all fairness though, I just started this series and haven’t seen enough episodes to give it a really good review. But that’s what I think so far. I’m not a follower of the original Airbender and I thought the much-lambasted 2010 movie was great (I think I’m alone in that opinion), but this show hasn’t impressed me so far.

Haven't seen it yet but that's pretty much what I'm expecting. The anime will never be surpassed.

On the other hand I love One Piece. The anime's great but the live action is just tighter and takes out some of the silliest elements.
