  1. It's close! Time to start packing stuff! And getting my car fixed so I actually make it there!
  2. Over the past four years BUCK Events has supported a variety of charities, raising over £23,000 in total so far! This year we were contacted by Get-Well Gamers, a non-profit organisation that takes donated video games and consoles to hospitals across the United Kingdom. Video games are an effective and proven pain management tool and provide much-needed entertainment for young people during long hospital stays. They are currently linked up with over 45 hospitals across the UK! GWG will be attending BUCK to bring some of their consoles to our video games room for the attendees to enjoy, and we’ll be raising funds through our charity auction and other related donations to support them. If you’ve got any old consoles or games you want to donate directly, you can get in touch through their website, or donate them in person at BUCK. Or if you have some rare, unusual, or just plain cool merchandise or memorabilia you want to add to the charity auction, bring it to the front desk on the day, and the proceeds will also help out! Each year we’ve broken our previous record, so let’s see if we can keep that drive going for 2016 this April! To learn more about Get-Well Gamers, check out their website for more information, and if you haven’t already secured your ticket to BUCK 2016, head on over to our tickets page and be sure to attend the charity auction yourself! It’s only a few weeks to go now! BUCK Towers, out!
  3. BUCK Announces OMNI as final addition for SSC 2016 Slightly belated update - BUT UPDATE! One of the earliest and biggest producers in the fandom, OMNI began his career in 2011 riding the crest of the dubstep wave as it built, progressing each year into different flavours and styles of EDM and the latest developments as electronic music as they rose up with some of the biggest EDM tracks to hit the scene including Clouds and Dragon Greed. Now producing hard-hitting EDM professionally with tracks like Drowning and his remix of “This is How I Roll” by Savant, on top of being on the performance circuit, he brings what could be his last con performance to BUCK 2016’s Summer Sun Celebration. This performance will be a double-act, with two exclusive CDs that will be revisiting the old and exploring the new- and he’ll also be bringing other exclusive merch for you to show your support! Be sure to check the BUCK website for scheduled events featuring OMNI, and make sure you’ve got tickets for the Summer Sun Celebration 2016 to bear witness to the most anticipated year of the event! As always, you can get the latest gossip on our social accounts at Facebook and Twitter, so smash those Like and Share buttons to spread the word! BUCK Towers, out.
  4. Mega thanks to CaptainHoers, MoonSugarPony, and InLucidReverie for making this epic video possible! Check the YouTube page for full credits, lyrics, and more! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDHkAQVjVjA
  5. The End of a Chapter Hey everyone, this is an open letter to deliver some news we’ve been mulling over for some time now. It’s with a heavy heart that BUCK Events has declared that BUCK 2016 will be the last brony/cartoon convention that we run. Once BUCK 2016 is all wrapped up in April, we’ll all be turning to other projects. Instead of scaling BUCK down and fading away, we’re going all-out. We’ve got big plans, we’ve got a show-stopping musician we’re about to announce. This is not abandon ship, this is “Get over here because it’s your last chance!” Now I’ve given the short of it, here’s the long of it – BUCK has been running since 2012. It started as a large-gathering that turned into a small convention in Manchester. The fandom was ascending, and there was massive demand. In 2013 we returned with the intent of running something bigger and better to satisfy this demand, and although it was hard work, we managed the transition up to the 1000-1200 attendee bracket. We also launched the Summer Sun Celebration, a concert that went toe to toe with other similar events much bigger than ourselves. Changing up to a larger venue, we quickly discovered that UK venues just aren’t used to dealing with US-style conventions. All the time the costs were high, expecting us to have big name sponsors and a few hundred exhibitors each paying a high price for their table – but as a convention, not an expo, we are effectively a private party, and the attendees pay our funding to run it. This business model is extremely volatile. We constantly wondered if we should scale back, cut the tech budgets, ditch the glitz and glam. But the thing that makes BUCK special is that it’s a blow-out event. You can go to a small convention and have a good time, hear some good music – but at BUCK, we want stuff you haven’t seen. We want a concert that matches the kind of environment you see on DVDs of platinum-selling bands where everything is off the hook. And we delivered that. I asked people who go to other events what they thought, and always the answer was; “Oh no, BUCK is massive, it’s a whole different thing…” And since that’s what you’ve wanted that’s exactly what we’ve always aimed for. But it’s expensive, time-consuming, and exhausting. In 2014, we ran our most successful event yet. It went almost without a hitch, and we all said; “This is it, we’ve got the recipe, now we just tweak the measurements and we’ll have this nailed…” It had been hard work, but we felt sure that the experience was now going to pay off, and the next event would be a breeze. But the staff were exhausted, with most of us having been living and breathing BUCK for two years solid, and also many who had also been heavily involved in BUCK 2012 and were on their third year. We called a one-year hiatus to gather our strength, and check that the market was still ripe for another big-convention. And it’s now that we find ourselves in 2016. Despite having the longest planning period of any BUCK, once again the work is exhausting. Despite having a tried and tested recipe, we are constantly faced with unexpected problems: people complacent that they don’t have to support us, or saying that it’ll be no different to 2014; and an on-going struggle to gain commitment from everyone involved. It feels like we’re doing this for the first time, again, when we should be doing it in our sleep. We feel that this has been reflected in ticket sales and the pool of community guests we look for – and this leads us to one conclusion, that the market for an event like BUCK isn’t there anymore. We could make it smaller. We could cut the budgets. There are many things we could do – but all of them will leave us with something that isn’t BUCK, and that’s not something we’re interested in doing. So with that load off of my chest, let me now clarify some things – We’ve been working our little rumps off on BUCK 2016, and despite all of the above, we’ve lined up an amazing event. We’re still finalising plans that make us say to each other “Oh hell yes, this is going to be amazing!” There’s an array of all new panels, new musicians and guests, new workshops and interactive events. We’re a community event at heart and we’re supporting you the community, with community events. But it seems this is as far as the community is willing to go. This isn’t the end of BUCK Events as a company. We’ve got other events on the back burners that are now coming to a boil, which we’ll be sharing later on this year – but they’re non-pony. We need to look at other areas that are more sustainable, and don’t require our staff to effectively work two day-jobs at the same time. As well as these non-pony events, we’re also not ruling out smaller events like BUCK LDN, which was a massive success that proved to us that the medium-sized meetup is very much alive and well. So what should you take away from this? This is your last chance to experience BUCK. It’s also our last chance to run it. So we’re going to make it a bloody good one. We’re going out with a bang. We’re going to quit on a high note: a tone that says “You should’ve been there… I’m not sure there’ll ever be anything quite like it again.” Graham / Nethesem BUCK Chairman
  6. Yea Peter New's cool... He's always up for a laugh and has a really genuine interest in the fandom. We nearly had him in 2013 as well, but complications with agents got in the way - when the opportunity came back up this month, we were in the right position to get it sorted
  7. Community Workshop Applications OPEN Hey you! Have you got an idea for an event at BUCK 2016? We’re looking for people who do arts, crafts, media, music, or other socially creative stuff and want to share their skills, methods, and work with the community. At BUCK we hate Q&A panels, while a few questions and answers from the audience are great, most of the general questions on subjects we know have been covered many different times at many events. So last year we asked our guests not to simply step on stage and wait for a good question, but to give the audience something to ask questions about. We had Dave Polsky speak about his writing method and inspirations, and he gave a stirring speech about ideas the audience had never considered before. We had G. M. Berrow do the same, and people were thrilled to hear entirely different ideas, and they could compare on contrast different methods to see what worked for them. We also had Heather Breckel demonstrate her digital colouring methods live on stage, showing people how to get started, what tools were needed, and how basic line-art is brought to life through flats, shading, and lighting. So step up and tell us what you have to show to the community! Chosen applicants will be given a designated time slot in one of our workshop rooms to use as they see fit! Send in your ideas using This Google Form, and we’ll be sorting through them as fast as possible!

  9. Hello everyone! It looks like people are a little concerned about accommodation options around our new venue, so we've put together this useful post to help you out. Although there are 3 Premier Inns (3*) and a Travelodge (2*) on the Trafford Park site, these aren't the only options! First of all, you can play with our interactive map at https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zwKySZNdM2X8.k8OKbWeF5csM which shows nearby accommodation options and those around the Manchester area. Use your mouse scroll-button to zoom in and out, or click and drag to move around. Select an icon for information about it; or use the menu on the left to show a menu of Convention Locations, Places to Visit and Accommodation options that you can select. We have added some transport options below, but for a wider range of information, please visit our Transportation Info thread. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BY CAR It's important to remember that the venue has FREE parking, so if you can drive, or can share a car with friends who are also going to stay at the same accommodation, then this gives you some easy accommodation options in the nearby suburbs. EXAMPLES If you have a car, or can get a lift with friends who are staying at the same accommodation, why not look at some places a little further afield, but only a quick blast up the motorway, a couple of junctions. Just beyond the Venue: Towards Barton-upon-Irwell is the 1* Rockhouse Hotel. It's local pub accommodation, very much not fancy, but cheap as chips. First come, first served I expect since it only has a few rooms. Heading North: M60 Junction 12 with the M602 takes you along towards Manchester. Come off at M602 Junction 2 for Ellesmere Park and Salford. There a number of small privately owned hotels and guest houses: the 4* Ascott Hotel, the 3* Ivy Mount Guest House, the 3* Weaste Hotel, the 3* Trivelles Hotel and the 2* Beaucliffe Hotel. Worsley at M60 Junction 13 has the 3* Novotel Manchester West and the 4* Marriott Worsley Park. M60 Junction 14 with the A580 leads towards Pendlebury which has the 3* Isis Hotel & Restaurant, and the 3* Premier Inn Swinton (both off the A666 to Clifton), and the 3* Hello Hotel (Swinton Park, off the Worsley Rd). Heading South and East: M60 Junction 8 A6144 to Carrington, there is the 3* Premier Inn Sale. M60 Junction 7 South into Sale there are a number of small privately owned hotels and guest houses: the 4* Belforte House Hotel, the 3* Lennox Lea apartments and rooms and the 1* Amblehurst Hotel (all three of which are also within walking distance of the Sale Metrolink station); as well as the 4* Brooklands Lodge, 4* Cornerstones Guest House, and the 4* Eskdale Lodge. M60 Junction 7 North into Stretford there is the 3* Thistlewood Hotel, the 2* Greatstone Hotel a little further along the A56 continuing on to Old Trafford and you'll come across the 4* Old Trafford Lodge (at the cricket oval), 3* Hotel Football (outside the gates of Man Utd), 3* Premier Inn Old Trafford, 3* Trafford Hall Hotel, and the 2* Chesters Hotel On the edge of the City: Try out the 3* Campanile Hotel, on Regent Rd, just off the A57(M) Manchester inner ring-road; or perhaps the 3* Stay Inn on A6042 Trinity Way, near the junction with the A6041 Blackfriars Rd. There is also the 4* Ainscow and the Salford Arms Pub, both near Salford Central Station (which are also near Trinity Way, but which could be walked to from the station). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PUBLIC TRANSPORT You can use either the DaySaver Travelcard (£5.20 off peak for bus; £6.70 off peak for bus and tram, £8.60 for rail, bus and tram) or the Wayfarer Ticket (£12 per day). The Travelcard can cover the rail network, metro and the buses. http://www.systemonetravelcards.co.uk/ Click here for a bus map of the Greater Manchester area Click here for a Rail map of the Greater Manchester area Click here for a Metrolink services map The Wayfarer covers the rail network, metro and the buses. Metrolink service map Click here for Wayfarer Bus Area Map Click here for Wayfarer Train Area Map BY BUS Lots of the accommodation options are within reach of a bus directly from the venue. The buses run every 15-20 minutes and run super-early and super-late. So you can attend the whole convention without having to worry about missing the last bus back. The 250 Bus is the last bus from Trafford (near the venue) to Piccadilly Gardens in central Manchester. The last bus on weekdays and Saturday is 00:10. This means that you can get back into the city after the Summer Sun Celebration which finishes at 00:00. After the convention finishes at 22:00 on the Sunday, the last bus is the 250 Bus at 22:33. So don't worry! You can book a hotel beyond the immediate environs of the venue, and still get back afterwards. BY METRO While the metro doesn't go to the Trafford Centre directly, it can let you link up with the bus service so that you can widen your accommodation options out across the city. EXAMPLES Here are some examples of places you could stay, and how to get there and back: YHA youth hostel at Potato Wharf Beds start at £12.00 a night, and can be cheaper if booked as a whole room for a group. Uber Taxi Quote: between Phoenix Way (venue) and Potato Wharf (YHA) - £9-12 each way. Public Transport option (bus): To the venue: Walk to Deansgate Station*. 10. Need to get to BUCK? Here are some tips and hints on travel information. Check out our useful map showing all the local accommodation as well as facilities and attractions. LOCAL We are very much aware that accommodation in the immediate area of the convention is limited to 3 Premier Inns and a Travel Lodge (walking distance). As such a number of people will be likely searching for alternative city-centre accommodation options and will need to use local transport options. CARS Head to the M60, Junction 9 or 10, and follow the signs for EventCity, Barton Square or Legoland. The best postcode for SatNav is M17 8AS. Junction 9 is usually less congested than junction 10. Please remember that parking is FREE this year at the venue, and we have thousands of spaces available. If you can find free/reasonably priced parking at or near your accommodation, then car-sharing between the accommodation and the venue is likely the cheapest way to get back and forth. 11. Here be the general trash posting thread for BUCK 2016! IT'S IN APRIL. THAT'S REAL SOON. GET HYPE. WHO'S GOING?! Here's a couple of photos from 2014 to give those of you who are unfamiliar with us an idea on what kind of stuff we run. We have a Summer Sun Celebration. This is a five hour music concert on festival-grade equipment. Regarded by many of our performers as one of the best music events on the brony convention calendar. It's epic. Our Charity Auction We get loads of REALLY COOL STUFF. Like, really cool. There's a lot of Cosplay And it's all stunning. The cosplay show is one of our biggest events. And Discussion Panels We don't like Q&A. It's been done to death. What we like is getting the fandom greats (both the well known and the massively underrated) together and getting them to talk about how they work their magic, and how you can do the same. Not just another 'what DAW do u use?' session. And of course... All The Merch, Ever.
  12. Merry Christmas from BUCK Events! Tis the season to be jolly, tralalalala lalalala. The stuff we’ve planned: we’re off our trolley! Yes, we’re here to expend our annual quota of mandatory merriment! Since it’s also the season for giving, now is the time to give the gift of BUCK ‘16. A ticket to best horse con makes a spectacular present as the anticipation only gets better as we near April. We’ve even got special Christmassy tickets. Buy a ticket before Jan 1st 2016, and we’ll throw in our own Christmas present: our 2016 SSC poster (RRP £10) entirely FREE, which you can collect at the convention on the day. This preview is still a WIP, we’ve got more names to add, but we’re not quite ready to share them! In case you haven’t seen all of our updates, BUCK is BACK for April 2016 with our best party ever. We’ve got a weekend of workshops, panels, fun and games lined up that span every interest you could want, from art to cupcake decorating, collectible card games to the ever-popular retro video game tournament. We’ve got the legendary Summer Sun Celebration on Saturday night, featuring five hours of music including Rock, Metal, K-Pop and EDM – plus we’ll be keeping our games rooms open throughout the evening so you can crash out on the consoles during your breaks. On top of all of that, we also see the return of our Charity Auction (here’s to breaking another academy record, we raised £12,500 last year); and an all new Cosplay Competition, featuring proper categories! Over Christmas we’ll be planning all this and more, so stay tuned for announcements on the panels and workshops, the community guests that will be hosting them, and more VIPs to show you their craft. As always, you can keep up to date with BUCK via our website, facebook, twitter, and even sometimes our tumblr! BUCK Towers, out!
  13. Cor, yea that IS easy! We originally wanted to run earlier in the year, but everyone else had the same idea. But due to exams and all the rest of it, it seems that August is much more convenient for people in general!
  14. Hello everyone! Nethesem here from the BUCK Convention in Manchester, UK – thank you to Artemis for allowing me to post this, I thought I’d tell you a bit about our convention! Engage wall of information text dump! What is BUCK? BUCK is one of the biggest My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic conventions in Europe, with an attendance of over a thousand people from across the world – 36 different countries in fact! We are a double-event. We open Friday night with The Summer Sun Celebration, a four hour concert hosted by some of the best fandom musicians, with live performances on a festival-sized sound system. We’ve got a whole range of music–from Rock to DnB, Rap Dubstep and more. Saturday and Sunday is the convention proper, filled with discussion panels, workshops, and demonstrations designed not only to show off the fandom’s creativity, but to inspire you to get creative yourself! Our events cover many aspects of the community, including Music and Art, Cosplay and Charity Auctions, Games and Crafts, and the social extravaganza of a thousand like-minded fans in one building! Who will be there? We’re building a whole list of guests from a range of backgrounds, all of them bringing their expertise to our events. Hosting their own workshops will be G. M. Berrow, author of the MLP Chapter Books – Heather Breckel, who is responsible for colouring the Friendship is Magic IDW Comic Book series – and Dave Polsky, episode writer. Our performers for the Summer Sun Celebration on Friday night will include: Prince Whateverer, with a full band behind him AcousticBrony, also performing as a full band! Mic the Microphone General Mumble Icky Lavender Harmony Addictia The Living Tombstone HMage And because we had so many amazing musicians offering their talents, we lined up another two music events for Saturday and Sunday – The Lunar Eclipse, with another mixed line up – and our all new Cadence Stage, a grass-roots event designed to give the lesser known musicians a shot on the big stage! We’ve also got a range of artists in the field of digital art, cosplay, animation, video games, and creative writing, all of whom will be sharing their finest work to date. Where is it? BUCK takes place at the Manchester Central Convention Complex, in Manchester, UK. It’s an enormous complex of big airy rooms around a huge converted railway station, complete with stunning victorian architecture. Surrounding the venue is the charismatic and diverse city centre of Manchester, with galleries, restaurants, bars, and many other attractions to suit any background. When will it be held? The Summer Sun Celebration is Friday 22nd of August, from 7pm until around Midnight. Tickets cost £20, and include the entire evening and access to the vendor hall. Not too shabby for nine headline acts! The Convention is Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of August, opening 10am to 10pm. Tickets start from £45 for a day ticket (available at the end of June), with weekend tickets starting at £80. Tickets available online at www.buckcon.org/tickets With Mardi Gras happening over the same weekend, the entire city will be alive non-stop, so even after we close out doors for the night, the party continues all around town! How do I get there? BUCK is accessible via Train, Coach, Road, and by Air – whatever your transport method of choice is, it’s easy to get to Manchester! Head over to our website at www.buckcon.org to see all the sweet juicy details, the full guest list, the latest news, and the best way to keep up with our on-going announcements! Why choose BUCK? There’s a lot of MLP related conventions on the calendar… like, a lot… so why BUCK? Three years and over thirty independant conventions later, the Brony Convention formula is wearing thin. So we thought we’d mix it up a bit. Forget Q&A panels. Forget a school-hall shin-dig. We went all out on The Summer Sun Celebration last year, and it turned heads. So we’re making it even bigger. We found no one really had many good questions at Q&A panels, that hadn’t been answered at ten other conventions. So we got rid of them and we’re letting our guests show you what they do first hand, and how they do it. We saw that our attendees are interested more than just My Little Pony, so we’ve brought in attractions for all manner of creativity – all of them designed to help creatives and non-creatives alike involved in the fun! It’s time for a convention that’s more than just vendor tables and people sitting behind microphones! BUCK Towers, out!
