    What you all (including the OP) have described is more spin off than an actual generational step up. Usually a new generation follows the complete closure of the previous generation, a hiatus of several years, and a re-boot. Considering how Hasbro has handled generational step ups / re-boots with other shows based on their toys (more about that later) like Transformers and GI Joe, it could go anywhere. The ponies would be drawn in a different art style, and they might try out a different type of animation, like 3D-CGI.

     

    The reason Hasbro discontinues a toy line is when sales of that toy aren't selling as well as they once did, the trend in design has changed, and consumers are buying toys from their competition. When they discontinue a line, it usually takes a couple of years to clear off the remaining inventory. Then a re-design of the toys. And then a re-boot of the commercials ...um I mean cartoon show, to reflect the re designed toy.

     

    It's all about the toys. And it always has been, since before they had TV shows advertising them. Since were talking about Hasbro, I'll use GI Joe as an example. When I was real young (under five) GI Joe was a tvelve inch figure (same size as Mattel's Barbie) and was sold as a soldier. This was after WWII, and soldiers were seen as brave hero's. By the late sixties and early seventies, the US was in Vietnam and it wasn't going well. We were seeing graphic images of dead and wounded soldiers every night on TV, and as a result sales of soldier related toys were declining. When I was around eight Hasbro had re booted its GI Joe franchise. This is the "kung fu grip" generation. They were five and a half inches tall, which was the same size as most of the superhero action figures on the market at the time, their clothes were still cloth that could be changed. And most importantly, he was no longer a soldier. Instead they marketed him as an action hero. The next re design was because of Star Wars. Kenner sold the Star Wars figures that were three and a half inches tall, and their outfits were molded plastic, and they sold both the hero's and the villains. Guess what Hasbro did with GI Joe? Three and a half inch figures, more friends, they created C.O.B.R.A. etc. The way kids played with toys had shifted with Star Wars toys, and Hasbro followed the paradime.

     

    I wrote all that to give an example of how (and why) Hasbro goes about generational transition. Since MLP is in Hasbro's "girl" toy line, they will keep it leaning that way for future generations. However how they define girl toys is changing, see Hasbro's Nerf Rebelle line of girl toys.

    So the next gen of MLP likely won't resemble FIM at all, But being that this is the most successful generation they will look at and consider what makes this generation so popular, and incorporate elements of that into future generations.

    Ideas for Villains

    A giant robot dinosaur. It was built by an insane scientist who thought that a real dinosaur attack was imminent. So he builds the robot dinosaur to protect everypony from the real dinosaur (that only exists in his twisted mind). On the first test run the robot dinosaur steps on, and crushes the device that controls the robot and the scientist. This leaves the giant robot dinosaur rampaging out of control leaving a path of destruction in its wake. Also, now would be a good time to mention that it shoots fire out of its mouth, because what the hell is the point of building a giant robot dinosaur if it dose'nt shoot fire? How will the mane six stop it? Giant robot dinosaurs don't give a crap about friendship! This villain is too much for the mane six to handle. It would seem that they have finally met their match. But just when it looks like all is lost...

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    DJ Pon3 shows up with a bass cannon. The wubs hit the robot dinosaur, and the vibration causes all the screws and bolts to loosen and fall out. The robot dinosaur begins to fall apart. Pieces crashing to the ground as it walks until it collapses on the ground in a pile of scrap metal. Then Vinyl is dubbed the "Princess of Bass" and becomes an alicorn.

    I haven't lived there for about fifteen years, so I can't give you advice on places to go or areas to avoid, it has changed so much. Obviously you'll want to hit up Empire State Building. Other than just going up to the top, they used to have a really cool interactive ride/movie thing I would say is worth the few extra dollars. Statue of Liberty is a must see. A Broadway show, even if theater isn't really your thing. A lot of TV shows are taped there, usually you need to get tickets beforehand (this is one of the few free things to do!) If that interests you an online search should do. In case I haven't mentioned it yet, bring plenty of money. NYC is very expensive! One of the "touristy" things I highly recommend is a circle line boat tour that basically cruises around the island. It takes about four hours, but totally worth it. There are also a lot of museums, I recommend Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and the Guggenheim. Also you might want to check out some of the art galleries.

    Now for some advice that dose'nt involve where to go. Don't rent a car! The public transportation system will get you where you need to go much more effectively. The subways are pretty easy to use and are the cheapest, and most efficient way to get around. Stay away from people dressed as superheros and cartoon characters in Times Square, most of them are scam artists, and they can be aggressive. For the most part Manhattan is layer out in a numbered grid, so it's really easy to find places if you know the address. If you only take one piece of advice I offer it's this: STREETS GO EAST/WEST AVENUES GO NORTH/SOUTH. AVENUES ARE NUMBERED ONE ON THE EAST THROUGH TWELVE ON THE WEST. STREET ADDRESSES COROSPOND TO THE AVE.(ie 725 23rd street would be near seventh Ave on twenty-third st) STREETS ARE NUMBERED FROM THE LOWEST NUMBER IN THE SOUTH AND GET LARGER AS YOU GO MORTH. (ie if you are at sixty-eigth street and you need to be at seventy-second street, you would need to go four blocks north). Disclaimer: the grid system is less reliable south of around eighth street. If you take a cab, knowing the directions and telling the driver the route to take will keep the fare down. They love to take tourists on expensive rides if you don't know better. People may try to hand you fliers or advertisement of some sort, refuse to take it! Too long to explain the scam (if they even still use that one) but even if it isn't a scam you still have to carry a stupid piece of paper around til you can find a garbage can. A free publication called the Village Voice is a great resource for finding things to do (concerts, off broadway plays, art galleries, movies etc.

    October is a great time of year to visit one of the greatest cities. I hope this helps, and have a great trip!

    I've never understood why, when people travel, the hosts try to make the destination as much like the travelers home as possible. When I go somewhere new, I want to enjoy THEIR culture and people, not more of my own.

    Why are Megan McCarthy and MA Larson the only ones who write Twilight stories?

    So ever since Season 3, and given the recent announcement Larson is going to be writing Amending Fences, I've noticed a trend in the episodes that have Twilight as the main lead (ie, all her normal SoL episodes as well as the two-parters), they've all been written by either M.A. Larson or Megan McCarthy outside of Season 1.  Now while I don't mind, I do find it rather odd that all the other characters get multiple writers to interpret their characters, strengths and what have you, yet not Twilight.  Yes there have been other writers to help co-write, but the only times that I recall a Twilight story not written by these two were the first three episodes (written by Lauren with help by AKR on Ticket Master) and Feeling Pinkie Keen (written by Dave Polsky and a...polarizing episode to say the least) I'm just curious as to why this is happening, and what are your thoughts on the matter.

     

    I think that Mitch and Meg are the only two that Hasbro trusts to write Twi the way they envision her. I realize that the fandom sees it differently,but at least to Hasbro, Twilight Sparkle is the flagship character of the franchise.

    And also, I searched several times to see if anyone had posted a topic like this, but I didn't find anything each time, and I'm sorry if there is something like this already out there, I have a hard time with this forums search engine.

    I know there is a topic like this. I remember seeing it like a year or so ago, and when I joined this year I was trying to find it to post in it, but I couldn't find it either. (The search engine isn't too good)

    So I'm glad you re booted the topic. So I was watching the Star Trek episode "Q Who" after a mlp mare-a-thon and made the obvious relationship of Q and Discord. But then this happened, I realised that a lot of the characters from Star Trek have pony counterparts. There is Captain Celistia ( or Princess Picard), Twilight Riker (or Commander Sparkle) Capt. Celistias number ome student. FlutterTroi, RainbowWorf (always quick to jump into a confrontation), JordiJack (works hard to keep the USS Sweet Apple Enterprise running), I have Beverly Crusher as Luna, and Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg s character) as Zecora she always has some good advice. Wesley is so Spike. Laxwana is Rarity. Data I have as kinda the CMC, Sweetie Bell because of Sweetie Bot (which dose'nt really count) or Apple Bloom because of the connection with Jordi. I relate Data to the CMC because his quest to be/understand human reminds me of the CMCs quest for cutie marks. The Borg are changelings. Only one I can't figure out is Pinkie. It worked so good for that episode that I started seeing those characters in other episodes. It works for a surprising number of episodes, although I admit not all of them. When it works I refer to it as "My little Star Trek: Spaceship is Magic"

    Well we know that there will be another fourty-three episodes (the rest of this season and season six) so if they contract for another two seasons, presuming that they are twenty-six episodes each, then that would be ninty-five episodes. So, the two hundredth episode would be the fifth episode of season nine. Assuming that there would be one season per year, the theoretical two hundredth episode would happen in 2019.
