  1. @Blitz Boom (Reply is a little shorter for now because mobile isn't being cooperative) They'd all start with the visuals of seeing foal playing, unaware of the other group's presence. This was a good place to start, and the siblings were very happy with the way are going right now. Without any distractions, they could watch events unfold in peace, and Horn was thoroughly focused on the movements and actions of these foreign and unknown creatures. In a way, they appeared to be just like the longma; they take care of their young and teach them the ways of the world. These ponies' appearances were still rather odd, but there were a few similarities that they didn't look too unfamiliar. This place... A school.... It looked like a good place to learn new things while the teachers, or what were possibly them, looked after the students' safety. Hearing about Omen's past experience with being turned away didn't sound right, but the woodworker was starting to understand why the siblings may have gravitated to her. "You were turned away because you didn't belong, even when you wanted to learn? I am sorry to hear that. I do not know if the other longma would turn you away like how you described your experience at that school, but if you want to learn anything that I could teach, please let me know. You seem so nice, and it does not sound right to turn away anyone who wants to learn." "Maybe I can tell you more about woodworking? I cannot say a lot because only those with the desire to become a woodworker and carver should be taught the skills needed for those tasks. However, I can say that learning was hard, and I failed many times before I found success. My patience, creativity, and resolve were always tested until I proved myself capable. If you like, can you tell me more about those other materials you mentioned? I would like to know more about them, even if I may not use them in my lifetime." It looks like Horu is building a positive rapport with Omen, an outcome that the siblings see as leading to a new friend for both of them. Back then, it felt like a pipe dream where they'd still find themselves in an uneasy tolerance with the villagers. Now, there might be some hope that Omen could find herself surrounded by friends among the longma. Even Lin was starting to have second thoughts on her previous stance on the longma being incapable of change. It may be too soon to say if that is the case, but there was a sign pointing to a positive outcome brewing at this moment. While the woodworker remained entranced by the sights shown to him through the gate, Sen walked up to the Ki'nathar, somewhat concerned or alerted to the mention of Mother. He'd walk up to the side facing away from Horu and whispered in Omen's ear, attempting make himself less noticeable. For now, it seemed to be working. "Omen, you mentioned Mother? I could hear her a little, but is she all right? Or did you pick up on her presence just now and there's nothing to worry about?"
  2. @Blitz Boom “Oh, thank goodness! Ah- I… mean… that’s good to know. The stories the others are coming up with can be rather scary, but maybe I can sleep a little easier now that you are telling me otherwise. They sound like they’re making you more terrifying than you really are, but right now, you are much nicer. I don’t know if I, or the other longma, are ready to see your kind, but your Mother sounds like she’s taught you well.” He’d try not to mention the eating fire and rocks part, if only because Omen’s rather calm demeanor right now might end up changing into something more explosive if he brought up her weirder aspects. Even then, Sen and Lin didn’t butt in, as Horu and Omen were carrying a conversation rather well. Maybe if this kept up, there might be hope that they could rally support from the villagers, or it could be a sign that the meeting with the elders could turn out better than expected. Still, something about what the woodworker mentioned got Sen thinking. If these are just the start of the tall tales, just what else have the longma been saying about them? There were stories about outsiders told around the fire, especially those told to the young ones, about why outsiders were resented. Some say they are opportunistic and ruthless liars who saw the longma as lesser beings, while others mention them being more on the cannibalistic side; one could only wonder what new tales are being spun now that an outsider is walking among them and what that says about the siblings. “I do that, among other things, as part of my tasks as a woodworker. I sometimes help build homes, but making wood carvings is what I do first. It’s tough, especially if you want to make very exact designs. Being slow and precise with stone tools is what we are trained to do, but it doesn’t always come out looking perfect. So, yes. It is hard, but that’s putting it lightly. Hm… maybe those tools are what you brought, Lin?” “That’s right. Those are tools specifically made for carving.” “Maybe I could try them out if they are like the ones I am still using. But let’s get back to that other thing you mentioned, about seeing what a pony looks like. I’d like to have a quick look, but not right here. There’s a spot further back inside the workshop where you won’t attract attention.” Horu gestured Omen and the siblings to follow him around the back. Normally, he wouldn’t let anyone there, as there wasn’t much to see aside from spare equipment and unused wood panels, but there was just enough space for them to do what they needed to do. Seeing the space looking like the small room Sen uses at the family’s hut was familiar, though, without any windows, the only source of light they have is a small lit tinderbox. The inside was much more cramped with little room to move, which looked even smaller within the dimly lit space. Omen being open to doing this and explaining things to him made the longma feel a little more comfortable with the oddities that are unfolding before him. The distinction between a Ki’Nathar and a pony was still lost on him, but that may just be a result of seeing the former shaped like the latter. That and having a master’s involvement didn’t make sense. “I am ready, Omen. Please show me a pony.”
  3. @Blitz Boom There was a certain kind of fun in seeing how others reacted to Omen’s voice being perceived in one’s mind instead of normal communication. Lin and Sen had already gotten used to it, but others like Horu were taken aback by it, the kind of response expected from those unfamiliar with her unique way of talking. It felt like a kind of odd scratching behind one’s mind at first, seeing someone speak without moving their mouth, their voice emanating and vocalizing within one’s head instead of coming through their ears, yet the latter seemed to be just as true, if only because they were accustomed to it. The longma craftworker, already scared out of his wits, had to stay put and calm himself to avoid yelling. As much as he wanted to do so, Omen’s words had a kind of sincerity or naïveté in them, the kind that could be attributed to the young despite already mentioning how she was much older than she appeared. That, and the compliments she gave on the village were rather unexpected but welcome. He gave himself a moment to stop and take some deep breaths, slowing down his breathing while dropping his tools on the workbench next to him, but a minute had gone by without anyone saying anything until the conversation resumed. “You… you think so? Th… thank you. I… did want to yell, but you don’t look like you want to take me away to some d…dark place to uh… eat me or something.” “That doesn’t sound like Omen at all. Is your imagination getting out of control?” “No, no. It’s just that there were stories going around the village when you first came. Do you know how the exiles are believed to never find life again once they leave the forest? Some of the other villagers say that of you and your sister; you were brought back to life and charmed by the outsider… I mean, Omen… to return to the village so she could devour us or take us away. There is also another story that says you and your brother are not really yourselves, that someone or something is wearing your bodies like skin. I don’t really believe that but seeing you now, Lin, that one may be some truth to-“ “Enough! Whatever you have heard or are told, I’m still me and Omen won’t harm you.” There was no denying what was present before the craftworker despite the stories, but that wouldn’t stop rumors and tall tales from spreading. If word about the events concerning Solasan and Legion’s attempted takeover spread far beyond this village, then there’d be even weirder tales to come once they head off to answer to the other elders. However, Lin, though somewhat incensed at the notion of being called unnatural indirectly, still found it rather amusing to a degree. As for Horu, there was much to be said about what Omen mentioned, namely her being made during the old times and pony villages. That was a curious prospect that got the craftworker thinking about matters beyond the village. “Omen, if you don’t mind me asking about what you said, what is a pony? Is that what you are?”
  4. @Blitz Boom Sen and Lin smiled and nodded, feeling fuzzy inside after what Omen said. Knowing that they were doing something right while acting as their friend’s guide was rewarding. They may not find themselves in the role of teachers officially, but it was always good knowing they are doing what they can to help. This was especially true for Lin, who was previously given suggestions on the possibility of her becoming a teacher. It wasn’t the kind of future she had in mind for herself, the affirmation others had for this kind of role may be something she should seriously consider. “That’s right. You’re learning your way around, and I’d say it seems like you’re getting a hang of things faster as well. What we can teach you may be limited, but we’ll do our best to help. We’re also learning from you, which means we are learning together in some ways. Oh, and about Ghilan wanting to earn your trust, he wants to show it through his actions; words aren’t enough for him, and so he wants to prove it to you.” “Come, let’s head out and settle what we must do. We’ll start with giving the tools to the artisans because I am fairly certain they’re wondering why I’m taking too long.” There are three sets of tools, all corresponding to three different artisans and woodworkers. Fortunately, they tended to peddle their services and goods wherever they lived, only allocating a part of their abodes for workplaces. This was all small-scale relative to the kinds of stores found in Equestria, but workshops tended to be run by one or two longma at most, but anything involving guard training or resource-gathering was relegated to specific venues. It would take about less than five minutes of travel from the siblings’ family home, and it seemed all of the recipients are present, as the woodworkers tended to live fairly close to one another for the other villagers’ convenience. The first to be visited was a rather young longma, short in stature and cautious about his work. “Hello? Horu? It’s Lin; we brought you something as part of that exchange we talked about before.” “Oh, yes, though I am still questioning if what you brought will help me in any way. And… O-oh! I see you’ve also brought the um… the outsider. If you don’t mind, please don’t touch anything around here because I prefer to have this mess. S-So, I h-hope those ornate wood carvings were to your liking?” “They were great, and I got a set of woodworking tools that could help you. While we’re at it, could you at least refer to ‘the outsider’ by her name? It’s Omen, and she isn’t going to hurt you.” “Y… yes, of course… Well met, uh… Omen. I take it that you are getting familiar with our village?” The longma inspected the tools presented to him, but he wasn’t too sure about how to actually use them. It was a fairly good idea utility-wise, but getting acquainted with tools he has no idea of would likely deter him from actually putting those to good use. Still, there were at least some good intentions behind the gift, but their usefulness has yet to be seen. As for meeting with Omen and seeing her this close, it was rather unsettling. The shadowy appearance, wispy hair, and piercing eyes didn’t exactly look reassuring. He had to contain himself to avoid causing a disturbance despite how disturbed he was already.
  5. @Blitz Boom This was likely what got to Elder Ghilan, the most straightforward idea that Omen presented that it got the elder to reconsider how he was thinking about the matter. Frankly, it was a good way of putting things into perspective for him, and the siblings certainly had a much better understanding of their friend. Lin definitely found herself impressed as she smiled and nodded at the Ki’Nathar’s assertion. However, what the elder said is just as important when dealing with others, especially when someone’s capable of hiding ill intentions behind a good facade. Still, it seems Omen is now the one dishing out some uplifting words to the elder. The siblings found themselves someone pretty special to them, and he deemed it an honor that he was being showered with what could be a positive outlook. He greatly appreciated the offer of help extended to him, and so he’d try to live up to the trust placed on him by the Ki’nathar. “Then we will help each other out, Omen. There’s no arguing that you have placed your trust in me, and so I should show you that your trust isn’t misplaced.” He bowed to everyone in the hut before taking his leave, turning to the hunter to discuss the new developments that have cropped up during his private discussion. Now, it was the siblings’ turn to attend to their own matters, delivering the tools and settling some old grievances. “I’m sure he wants you to trust him, but I think he wants to earn your trust. After all, Ghilan told us why he agrees with listening to outside perspectives to help improve the longma and wanting to go to you and Rosa for ideas. Think of it like this: remember when we first met him? I recall hating him on sight just because he was an elder no different from Solasan, an uncaring opportunist. Not trusting him at first was understandable, but I let my distrust blind me to how he understands and wants to help. That changed when he helped us take down the previous elder, and it showed me that he wasn’t bad.” “Being openly trusting can make us easy to fool, just as being openly distrusting can make us see the worst in others, both without knowing enough. I’m sure he wants us to find balance in that and have a healthy amount of doubt.” Lin picked up the tools she intended to bring along to the artisans in the village and prepared to head out, while Sen was willing to join her to begin sorting out his own matters. There was plenty to do for now, and it would be good to start soon while the afternoon sun still shone through the trees. They were both certain that there was more to discuss, mostly their plans for the upcoming days or to just clear things up. “What we mentioned might still confuse you, Omen, so how about we take a walk? Maybe give some thought to what Elder Ghilan said and we’ll do what we can to help you make sense of it. By the way, what you mentioned earlier about trusting until shown otherwise... Did someone teach you that, or was that something you picked up on your own during your time in Equestria? We were occupied with telling you about our thought process but didn't consider if that was also how you thought things through.”
  6. @Blitz Boom Ghilan shook his head, though not in disbelief. To some degree, he expected an answer like this, but the implications behind it were something that could prove dangerous for Omen. Knowing Sen and Lin, they were always looking out for her, but there are times when Omen would be on her own, and making sound decisions based on self-assessments and knowledge was something to be nurtured in everyone. Looks like the siblings would need to consider this when helping their Ki’Nathar friend. “You may want to reconsider what you said about placing your trust in anyone, myself included. Not everyone will follow others for the right reasons whether it’s because they lack information or they didn’t think it through. If I secretly meant to harm you or take advantage of you by playing up an image of someone good and kind-hearted, you would be another victim. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t trust anyone, but if you place your trust in someone, make sure you are informed and you do it for the right reasons.” “The same goes for you, Sen and Lin, and it is likewise true for blind distrust. Know what or who you follow and know when to abandon that trust.” The siblings nodded in agreement, finding his advice sound. Sen, especially, felt poignant about it, remembering the harsh first interactions he had with the elder a long time ago. Having been on the receiving end of trust and distrust has left the elder in a spot that left him knowledgeable but pressured. Even now, he felt like had to earn the trust of his fellow longma, and if the future permits it, those beyond the forest. Omen trusting him too easily wasn’t reassuring, but he’d take on the matter as gently as he could to help her develop a sense of discernment, becoming conscious of matters that require serious thought. “You’re right about me wanting to make things stable first before moving on to change, but the rest isn’t simple. As much as I want things to change, what form that would take and how I would do it are unknown, and that will leave many doubtful of my goals. Let me tell you this now: what I want is for the longma to understand that our ways aren’t perfect and be open to the perspectives of other creatures so we can improve and change ourselves. That’s why I came to you and Rosa. So I can learn and do for the other longma what you did for me. Rosa briefly taught me about Equestria, its creatures, and some of the more horrible aspects of the world outside this forest, but knowing those will be of great help when they come up.” It sort of felt like Ghilan may need to delve into the more unsightly practices of other creatures in Equestria, especially those that would take advantage of the longma’s naïveté. If other creatures knew of them, they’d be easy pickings, but just as there were bad elements, there were good things to remember. Building alliances and positive ties with other creatures could help them better defend themselves, learn from them, and even advance without losing sight of their uniqueness. Still, despite what he's learned from his friends, especially Omen, there was positivity in her words that reassured him of what he was doing. The “strange one with the golden eyes“ caught his interest, but it may not be important for now, and so he avoided bringing it up. He’d continue further, but it seemed their discussion would have to wait for another time, as a village hunter peered through the front entrance to the hut and signaled him. The elder knew what that meant, and his other duties couldn’t be delayed further. “It seems I am needed elsewhere. Thank you for taking this time to discuss about what is to come with me, but if you need anything more, just let me know. Oh, and don’t forget what I said about trust, and seriously consider it. Take care, everyone, and I will see you soon.”
  7. @Blitz Boom “I think it’s best if we visited Mother sometime soon so we could get her thoughts on the matter. This is a big moment, and anything that can give us a better chance of success is something we should seriously consider.” “That, and it’ll be good to let her know about how we’re doing. Giving her peace of mind is just as important.” The siblings nodded both at Omen’s response to Ghilan and at each other’s suggestions. Hesitancy and doubts aside, there was always something about speaking with confidants that gave the longma siblings strength. Whether it be with Rosa or Mother, whom the siblings enjoyed company with, they always had wisdom or knowledge to impart that had a not insignificant effect on them. It wasn’t quite like making conversation over tea or dinner but a moment when they can bare themselves and speak about difficult matters without judgment, which was the kind of thing they felt they needed. “Heh, heh… Well, thank you for your confidence in me, Omen, but be honest. Would you trust an elder whose only success so far is getting things back to normal with nothing new after it? Very little’s changed in the village, and while some villagers don’t mind you being here, it’ll be different elsewhere. Still, your words are true; those who spend time learning new things may be in a better position to lead.” “Wouldn’t you say you are learning? About Equestria or other creatures beyond ourselves? And wouldn’t that make you a good option for elder if you had a chance?” Ghilan didn’t expect to find himself on the receiving end of the questioning now, but Omen, Sen, and Lin had a point about learning and experience. Their travels and experiences already gave them an edge on this matter, and all they need now is an opportunity to share what they know. He’d overlook the part where having something to show for their knowledge and demonstrate that knowledge’s applicability is just as important, but they might already have something that could do that. There was a hint of wisdom in their words that gave the young elder confidence, and he had to steel his resolve just like his friends before him. Perhaps there was a chance for them to succeed. However, not all questions had easy answers. He had some idea of what he could say, but that sense of certainty wasn’t on his side. “Some thought that their roles couldn’t be abandoned or have the skills to lead like village healer Arenaria. Others didn’t believe that anything would change and left, willingly exiling themselves in the hopes of finding a better life. Then, there are those who thought a better understanding of ourselves was where we should start. Are you all aware of the longma’s history? About why we chose isolation and the events that led to that choice? Some of us believe that the story doesn’t add up, and they left to find the truth. Wouldn’t you say there is some merit to their reasons? If you were in their place, Omen, would you agree with them?” Those reasons resonated with the siblings, at least to varying degrees. Arenaria’s role as a healer was too important to give up, especially if it meant abandoning those who needed her skills. The second was true for Uddo and his partner, who found a better life in Canterlot and was unwilling to go back. However, the last one was something that piqued Lin’s interest. Some longma aren’t entirely convinced of the historical accounts that led to their isolationism, and they’re off looking for answers. Maybe there was something worth pursuing at home after all. At the same time, Ghilan wanted to see how Omen could articulate her responses. If they were all poised to speak before the elders, he’d like to see how they’d fare in a controlled setting. After all, there was a chance they’d all be going into a debate to argue each other’s ideas.
  8. @Blitz Boom “Oh… I didn’t realize what things were like for you before meeting Sen and Lin. I am glad that you have found companionship with them and that you are able to learn together. The knowledge of Equestria’s creatures is a good place to start, and information on them would help sate the other elders’ curiosities. However, it would be best to consult with your mother on what information could be considered dangerous to your kind if it were known or if you talking about your kind, in general, should be avoided. Someone who knows more than me is better suited to help you in that matter.” “Otherwise, anything you might know about other creatures, how they lead their kind, and how they treat others beyond themselves are worth mentioning.” This line of questioning is starting to get more complicated, with the siblings and Ghilan now feeling the pressure subconsciously. They could have any number of references from which they could start, but only the council of elders knew what questions they’d bring up. Only so much can be made in preparation, and everything else relies on how well they can answer. The elder was happy to see that Omen was getting the gist of where their conversation is going. It seemed like they were in agreement with their approach to convincing the elders and showing them that not everything outside the forest is someone out to harm them. And for those that pose dangers, being prepared and knowledgeable was already a better prospect than knowing nothing. What worried the Ghilan was what the elders would do with that knowledge, but only time will tell what actually becomes of it. The main goal is to help them understand and convince them that it is worth taking a chance on the outside, and Omen had that understanding. The same could be said for Sen, but Lin wasn’t entirely convinced of the outcome. She would go along with it, as she had no reason to oppose what her brother wanted. After all, if they succeeded, the results would still be a good one, and she may find purpose within this new future they are creating. However, it was apparent that there was more to speak of and clear up. Even now, the siblings held their tongues, hoping to learn more about what got Ghilan scared of his own future. Still, he couldn’t imagine rebelling against the order he knew all his life, and he had to believe that the other elders weren’t completely unreasonable. The irony wasn’t lost on him, especially knowing the circumstances leading up to him choosing to ignore an elder before. “Elders are chosen for their wisdom and knowledge, which come from a lifetime of experiences, to guide and lead their charges lest they fall to confusion and ruin. As you can guess, age has something to do with it and is part of who gets chosen. Compared to the other elders, I am a child who grabbed power because no one else was holding it; you can clearly see I am about as young as Sen and Lin. There were others like myself who weren’t charmed by the previous elder all those years ago, but we weren’t convinced that we could do better in his place. Regardless, someone had to step up, even if only temporarily, to keep us together and rebuild. If I have to step down and place my trust in someone else to lead us, that may be what’s best.” “Others? You mean... why didn't you say there were others before?” “Because they aren’t around anymore or have left for places I do not know.” Ghilan paused and took this moment to regain his composure, knowing well that he just opened himself up to more questions, including this untold part of his story. “Back to your question, Omen. There were others, but their goals and futures lay elsewhere, and I had to respect that.”
  9. @Blitz Boom It sounded like Omen was getting a good grasp of the situation, and Ghilan and the siblings were glad this is the case. Given the situation they found themselves in, having a foothold was already a good start. Sen, still unsure of the line of questioning they’d all undergo, had mustered some confidence, if not in himself, then at least in the company he was in right now. They weren’t in this alone, and though it felt like they were outnumbered by the many who are unconvinced by the notion of giving the outside world a chance, he could turn to those who offered their support now. “Let’s say you are asked to tell the elders something that could put your realm, Mother, or fellow unformed siblings in danger. As much as we would like to believe that the elders, or anyone, couldn’t do much to them, we should try to keep them safe. Likewise, anything that could put you in danger based on how you respond is a question that doesn’t need an answer. It might be hard to grasp right now, but let’s hope that you won’t be asked such questions.” “Now, for the kinds of answers that could help, they might start with what it’s like living in Equestria or what kinds of creatures are there. Maybe you could also mention if other creatures are aware of the longma and what they might know. Sadly, we don’t know exactly how we’ll be questioned, but it helps to have some idea of what the elders might ask. It is as Sen mentioned; you won’t be questioned alone, and we’ll help you however we can.” Though it seemed like they were getting somewhere, Ghilan likely should have anticipated more from the grilling he was getting from Omen, especially on the matters of the other elders asking about the outside world and the likelihood of them also targeting him for whatever reason. She was asking some tough questions, and admittedly, they were pretty good. Bringing them up now was a ripe opportunity to get things cleared up, yet these two questions in particular were difficult to think about, let alone answer. However, the elder already offered to help the Ki’Nathar, so he’d oblige. In a way, having an answer right now means he’d also get a chance to examine himself and how he fits in this matter, maybe even understand the other elders’ thought processes. “You raised some good questions, so I’ll do my best to answer. The other elders are likely curious, even if they just want to protect themselves and others who are like-minded. Understand that they grew up knowing nothing about the outside; it’s reasonable for them to want to look out for their villages, and that means they would be concerned about what we have to say. Now for your other question… what you said crossed my mind a few times.” Ghilan paused, knowing he would have to come to terms with the possibility that his past may be catching up to him. It seemed like a good idea back then. A village without an elder was just asking for trouble, and without anyone stepping up, he had to do something. Being in the midst of a crisis that no one was taking seriously was what pushed him to make that choice. Now, the consequences would be coming for him, and he could only hope for an outcome that doesn’t put the most number of longma in a bad spot. Sen and Lin looked toward him with concern, unsure what to make of this sudden change in tone and only expecting the worst. “I will be there to answer their questions like you, but it’ll involve more reasons than just talking about the world outside. You know I am a lot younger than the last elder. This fact already places a lot of suspicion on me, making it look like I grabbed power when the village didn’t have a proper elder. If they aren’t convinced of my reasons, then you won't be calling me Elder Ghilan for long.”
  10. @Blitz Boom “Normally, it would be good for us to be there and explain things to them. The problem is what might happen if we mess this up. We didn’t think it would happen so soon, so just need to be sure of what they’ll ask and how we’ll answer. However, we won’t know what exactly will happen if things do go bad, especially if it doesn’t put us in immediate danger. Let’s see how that plays out before we do anything.” Ghilan was glad to hear about the siblings’ more cautious approach to this matter and the patience needed to guide Omen through this line of questioning. Perhaps it may not be them he has to worry about, but the long-term repercussions of him assuming his role as elder outside of normal processes. He may have stepped up when the village needed one, but some will see that act as a usurpation, something deeply frowned upon by those who hold fast to tradition. Knowing the council, this was pretty much their stance. This was the moment to plan their days ahead before they head off into an uncertain future. Sen knew he had to make some stops and have some much-needed conversations, while Lin would have some of her own immediate tasks. Their grandfather would also need to be informed of this development, and it was already bad enough that the siblings were away from home often enough that they were neglecting their remaining relative. It seemed like arrangements need to be made. “We should let Rosa know, though us transporting him from Old Canterlot would need to wait. We don’t know how long we’ll be traveling or when we’ll start, so it’s best for us to just tell him about what will happen. Until the questioning happens, he could help us prepare better.” The latter questions were something that Ghilan could help with, as right now, he was the most knowledgeable on the elders’ line of thinking, even if that didn’t really amount to much. He wanted this endeavor to succeed as much as the siblings, and he’d do whatever he could to assist to give themselves better odds. “Knowing you’ll all be a security risk, expect guards to be watching your every move. Anything they could perceive as a threat will cause them to act swiftly, likely fight you or worse. As for the meeting, showing respect, speaking only when spoken to, and being honest are good places to start. Any information from your travels that can help the elders understand you will be of great value. We’ll be standing before them to explain ourselves, but I’ll make sure you aren’t going to speak alone. Oh, and not every question needs an answer, especially if you are asked to tell the elders something you cannot say.” “Don’t worry about answering questions about our history or how our arguments relate to the longma. We’ll handle those for you. On the off chance you have to answer that kind of question, I remember something Rosa said. Other creatures know of the longma now, so even if we keep to ourselves, we won’t be able to call for help against anything that will mean us harm because of isolation. You won’t be the only one answering questions, so if you need us to step in and help, just let us know.” Ghilan was willing to set some time aside to help Omen get better acquainted with the longma if she asked for some time for explanations. Though there was still some to prepare before leaving, momentary diversions from his own routines to help the Ki’Nathar and the siblings will take precedence, though there’s always time on the paths when traveling. The near-empty forest outposts should give them some extra time during their temporary stops to clear things up as they go along.
  11. @Blitz Boom “That’s good to hear, Omen, and I believe the same is true for you, Sen and Lin. I understand if Rosa can’t join you because it means taking time away from his life to be here. Well then, I hope the news I bring won’t get your spirits down. A messenger came recently and informed me that the council of elders wishes to convene. There will be much to discuss, and I’m certain that the unfortunate events surrounding the previous elder and us will be part of it.” Elder Ghilan gestured everyone to the hut’s common room and sit, as this would be a heavy subject for himself and the siblings. What transpired when Legion and the former elder Solasan were active was one thing, but the repercussions of having a vacated position, not to mention letting an outsider into the village, will definitely be a hot topic. A lot has changed in a short amount of time, and changes like these wouldn’t look favorably to the longma at large. After all, it did appear as if the village where the group lived had gone rogue. “Were you told more? Have the other elders said anything else about what’s happened?” “No, but I can imagine what they are thinking. Between myself suddenly assuming the role of an elder and you two letting Omen into the village, they will want answers. In two days’ time, we'll be leaving to answer their summons; attend to whatever matters you’ll need to do because there’s no telling what will come once we leave the village.” The siblings felt their hearts skip a beat for a moment. As much as they talked about this day coming, they wished they had more time to prepare. Two days may seem sufficient, but the mental preparations needed to collect their thoughts and articulate them were not something easily done. It wasn’t like speaking up for Rosa in the hearing, because anything they say now could affect more lives. A wrong word here could probably see them exiled for good, and that may be the least of their worries. Perhaps this may be the time to set their lingering affairs in order and follow up on Ghilan’s suggestion to do whatever needs to be done now. The way he said it may not have been intended to be ominous, but it certainly felt like it. Deep down, Sen and Lin were paralyzed by how sudden this all was, especially the former. They were left speechless for a while until Ghilan chimed in once more. “Do you have any questions while I’m still here? I’ll do what I can to ease your worries and answer as best I could.” “Is there anything we can do to make sure Omen is safe? She may be able to walk around without getting hurt here, but I doubt the same could be true once we reach... wherever it is we’re going.” “No, not without making things look like I’m playing favorites. We’re walking a tricky path now, so anything that stands out will be enough to leave an impression on others. It may be best to leave that to you; after all, who will she trust more? Some random guard I assign to her or you two? I trust this a sensible arrangement, Omen?”
  12. @Blitz Boom Sen smiled and nodded, content that he reached an understanding with Omen on Scarcity. He wouldn’t decide to suddenly act suspicious of her all of a sudden, but he meant what he said about being careful. As much as they have benefited from having a positive rapport with the mare, staying on her good side doesn’t invalidate being observant of her methods and behavior on the chance that it’ll tip them off to something that’ll give them pause. That may be all they could do, but every little bit helps. As for Lin, she’d stay put in Omen’s room for a moment to see Shrimp being happy, giving her some time to rethink her stance about this old hut and what it meant for her as a home. As much as she had resentment for the longma, this place, in particular, was still just as much a home, and there were still some folks around who she doesn’t dislike. It only felt that way based on how many longma she considered as her friends. It was easy to forget that not everyone was an enemy in her eyes, and perhaps seeing the village might get her head cleared. “I just need a moment to check on the hut, but I won’t be long. I’ll join you right now unless you want me to stick around here and watch Shrimp for a bit. I noticed he’s not with you.” “I’m not going to stop you if you want to come and have a look around the village with me, Omen. Maybe a few folks might say hi or chat you up. And about what you said… I just have some bad memories of this place when I had to run from home, but seeing this place again, I can’t deny that things weren’t all bad. I had father, mother, and Sen; my memories with them are still pure, and I don't think anything could change that. Sorry if this is confusing you, but I feel complicated about this place; I’m probably as confused as you right now.” Sen didn’t mind staying around for a while to wait things out, though being able to say hello to some of the folks in the village wouldn’t hurt. He still remembered a conversation he had with Rosa about meeting a certain old friend and hopefully patch things up with him. There was a lot to say, and talking things out now rather than later or never sounded like the best course of action. How that conversation will turn out is what scares him the most, but it’s one of those things that must be done because the alternative was letting things continue to stagnate. However, that would have to wait, as someone was just by their home’s entrance. “Hello? I heard voices in here, and I… Oh, you’re all here. That’s good because I need to inform you all about what’s happening, and I’d rather keep this private. I take you are all doing well?” Fortunately, the visitor was a familiar one. Elder Ghilan was just passing by when he overheard some familiar voices, but judging by the elder’s seriousness, they'd have to keep the pleasantries short. It sounded like this was important. As for Lin, passing on the tools to the artisans who’d be receiving them and seeing how the village was doing would have to wait.
  13. @Blitz Boom “There is something to be said about seeing the good in others, but maybe we shouldn’t forget that there is more to Scarcity than what we can see. All I’m saying is that we should be careful.” Sen didn’t see the need to create an argument here about Scarcity and the merits of being careful or too trustworthy. Mother may have seen some potential with the mare, and it isn’t unreasonable for that to be the case, but knowing so little about her means they should at least exercise caution. Having already had several positive interactions with her definitely says something about the mare, but it may just be a way to maintain the image she carefully cultivated for herself. If that is on display, one can only imagine what the ugly side would look like. For now, he was content to stay on the mare’s good side, even if his reasons boiled down to being able to sleep better knowing he didn’t anger someone who wielded a lot of influence. Likewise, it would make the longma appear rather hypocritical if he argued his point right now. He admittedly was in a similar position back when the group first met Rosa, and having positive experiences with him definitely clouded his perspectives on the thestral. Sen was naive, and though he may have made a lasting friendship with Rosa, he could see that he might have been played for a fool if things went differently. “I need to be specific to get this to work right. A scent likely wouldn’t work for me, but a thought might just do the trick, just like you said about your sister. Let’s do it, then. It’s about time we headed back to the forest for a while so we can get our tasks sorted.” Lin calmed herself for a few seconds before opening another gate before her. Focusing on specific imagery from the hut following Omen’s suggestion, she recalled the new room and the objects within it, along with the emotions that she felt that day. That was a good day, having released her pent-up grief and experiencing the hope that she could start over. A moment like that was fleeting, but there was good in those thoughts despite the negative ones she associated with her family home. Upon setting foot on the other side, everything was just as she left them. A bedroll on the ground, a small desk, and the little box that served as Shrimp’s personal space… things that reminded her all of this was Omen’s part of their home for as long as she would have it. “You’re right, Omen. Thinking about this place specifically was the right call; I think I’m starting to have a better understanding of how this power works. Do you want to rest for a while? Maybe have some time alone? I’ll be out for a while to give these tools and see what’s been happening in the village, but I won’t be far.” Likewise, Sen would step through and quietly walk outside, where he'd stay put in front of a private room. Something held him back from entering, but he was content to stay outside and wait things out, though he'd only act this way to maintain an air of solemnity and respect. He didn't ask the others to join him, though, as this felt more like a private matter to him. After what had transpired from the previous days in Canterlot’s old town, dragging Lin into this didn't seem right. Her mind was made up on some matters, and this one seemingly fell under that, leaving him content to do this matter alone.
  14. @Blitz Boom “It wouldn’t hurt to try asking if she knows more about it. Knowing what Scarcity is capable of, having a way to do such a thing makes her dangerous if we cross her. That unpredictability is her advantage, especially more so because we barely know much about her. I guess I’m starting to understand why the fear of the unknown is a thing.” Sen sat by the fire pit once everyone made their way through Lin’s gate and found himself pondering on this matter. Scarcity is powerful and well-connected, a kind of ally that is worth having on their side simply because it means they wouldn’t be a target. The longma knows how it would feel like to be hunted, and being within Scarcity’s crosshairs poses a kind of danger and paranoia that is on a whole other level. Looking over one’s shoulders would barely describe that feeling. No matter how the situation was framed, it was sure to set his heart racing. However, it wasn’t just him who had the gears in their head turning, as Lin sat by the cave’s furthest interior wall to figure out what exactly went wrong. She did her usual process, minus the part that involved deep thinking. Focus on a place, then open a gate. Perhaps it was the first part of the process that went wrong, as she wasn’t thinking too much on a destination beyond what she thought “home” was for her. “Not focusing on how it works? I suppose it makes sense that when you do something enough times, you don’t tend to think about it anymore. It’s sort of like breathing? We do it so much that we just don’t think about it, and it just happens. Maybe it works on a different level mentally? Hmm… it sounds like having a variety of uses for this power and mixing them into a fighting style could be interesting.” “I wouldn’t know where to begin with answering your last question, though. Maybe it’s because it’s the last place we visited that could be considered home? Or it might be because I don’t see the old family hut as my home anymore. That place may have been fixed up, but old and painful memories are still there. Those don’t go away because they are always there to remind you of them…” She may not have been there physically, but when Sen recounted the events of that fateful night, it made Lin sick to her stomach. Her eyes watered at the thought of Sen being ripped away from mother and father, then being forced to run away to save himself. She wasn’t there physically, but she could imagine herself being there, living through the emotions her brother felt. Even now, she could still see it playing out in reality, with the phantoms enacting every painful moment. It wasn’t something that could be forgotten, but that memory is driving Sen to go back home. It may spur him to action, but the same memory only seems intent to drive Lin away. “Let me try this again, and I’ll follow your instructions… Focus on where to go, but don’t think about how it works…” The longma opened another gate in a small, focused area, once more with the exit being their home. It was as good a time to try this process again, though she hoped the result would turn out different. The result may just prove a hypothesis of gates acting through one’s subconscious right. Unfortunately, the path through the gate brought Lin back to where she started, and Sen didn't even need to step through the new gate. “Here again? Either I am not being specific enough on a location or I really see this place as my home. When you open gates, do you focus on a specific place where a gate will open? Let’s say I wanted to go to the guest room in Rosa’s house. Do I need to think about that room specifically to open a gate there or do I just think of Rosa’s house in general? I think opening an exit point requires me to be specific, otherwise this power might working off something like an inner thought.”
  15. @Blitz Boom “That sounds good, though even if you can pick up on his scent, we would only need to follow him just enough to know he’s safe. No need to further complicate things with him because who knows what others will do to stop us from finding him just as easily.” “Sounds like that little gem Hammond had, the one that could hide his scent. All the more reason we should be even more careful.” Lin saw how such a tool worked, and that insight should give them some pause. Even if only Scarcity had one of those and gave it to Hammond for testing, that was enough for her to surmise that others may be able to either learn how it works or create more of them. The latter would probably be more likely, and if she were to guess at one thing that could describe Rosa’s new employers, they might just be the resourceful type. There’d be countermeasures in place if the group did this often enough to warrant action. If they were to go after the group for interfering, they’d better be ready to answer. For now, any spies following them may not have a reason to do so, but too much interference could be cause for a response. “Thanks. Maybe one of these days, I can set some time aside to really study the limits of this power to open gates.” For now, the siblings opted to stay where they were, but hearing Mother’s voice gave them a sense of comfort and familiarity. This place may be a dark realm, but there was a kind of gentleness within it that was always so reassuring. It got Sen thinking for a bit, and it felt like it was high time for them to say hello to Mother after not seeing her for some time. However, it may be worth holding it off for a bit, as Lin still had to see what was on the other side of the gate she opened. “Hey, before we do anything, why don’t we also set aside some time to see Mother? After bringing up changing the longma with uncle and Rosa, I’ve got some things I want to get off my chest and ease some worries.” “Of course, but let me finish this quick test before we do anything else. After all, I’m sure we can tell the others of what we went through, and there’s also that book Kiba gave for Omen. I’m kind of curious about the what it has and if it’ll be interesting to the other children.” Lin opted to go first into her gate, though the other side wasn’t exactly the kind of result she expected. There was no vocal response, but when Sen stepped in and came out the other side, they were back at the cave outside Canterlot. After all, this was their home, but the result calls into question what Lin thought about when she opened this path, or if Omen’s suggestion operated on a subconscious level, opening a path to what she deemed as “home.” “Well… it’s home…” Lin started as she scratched her head. “I guess this means it worked, right Omen? I mean, I didn’t think too hard about this one unless I misunderstood what you meant by thinking less about how gates worked.”
  16. @Blitz Boom Sen stood around for a moment, not quite as fazed by the odd realm he found himself in, as his sister stepped in to join the group. This was about what he expected with using Omen’s gates as opposed to Lin’s, but hearing the whispers and the dotted eyes peering in from the shadows was calming, in a way. For now, they’d be resuming their experiments, though the result of Omen’s latest trial didn’t quite give the results he hoped to see. There was the sight of the workshop, but not where he hoped the gate’s exit point would be. Tools and planks of wood meant they’d be crossing over and straight into the workshop. Only when he heard the rest of Omen’s explanation would the rest of his ideas fall apart and send him back to square one. “I think I understand. It takes time for a scent to linger, and objects often close to someone is what makes the scent stay longer. We’ll need to rethink how we’ll go about this, and if we can’t think of anything, we may need to just stop by Rosa’s home to check up on him. As said, we have to trust that he can take care of himself, so we will go to the place we will likely find him.” Lin paused for a moment to internalize Omen’s reply, though some of it was a little bit contradictory according to how the longma understood her powers. Thinking less to make the task easier? Maybe it was true if it meant one’s abilities sounding like it was second nature to them. That was reasonably true for someone like Omen if she remembers Mother’s suggestion, but it might not work that way for herself, as someone who came to her powers differently. Still, it was worth a try if it meant gaining a better understanding of her powers. The longma took a deep breath and tried to empty her mind of other distractions, then thoughts of her going to a specific location. Home wasn’t quite the best place to use as a benchmark, as she could subconsciously think of it, but that may have been what Omen said. Waiting until she wanted to go somewhere and then leaving didn’t sound like it would work, but then… “What the? Did… Did I just do that?!” The longma stepped back, feeling a gate open before her. “I didn’t think it would work, but I just followed your instructions and now there’s this!” “If you opened a gate like this, does that mean it goes straight home?” “I hope so, but we need to step through it to be sure. If this is what I think it means, then I know there’s a lot more to learn about my abilities. Looks like you’ll have to teach me more of this, Omen.”
  17. @Blitz Boom “I guess the number of places I can go to are tied to my memory? As long as I can remember a location, it might be possible to go to it. There may be some limitations, like if a place still exists the way it did back when I first saw it, but I haven’t tried opening a gate to a place that doesn’t exist. Might be something for me to try. The same goes for my memory; I don’t know its limits, so it could be a few things or maybe a very large number.” Lin knew about her powers from practice, but once the act of opening gates became normal, she hasn’t found herself wanting to learn more about her abilities. There are likely limitations to what she could do, and it may be prudent for her to try everything that comes to mind before she stumbles upon a situation that will likely render her powers obsolete or unusable at the wrong time. One thing was for sure, the Wellspring she visited long ago was not one of those places she could reach anymore. Despite having some memories of her time there, the place itself was one she could never reach again. That was about the extent of what she knew, and everything else related to Omen’s question was more theoretical to the longma. Until she had a definite answer, all she can provide are guesses. It might not be what Omen hoped to hear, but that was all Lin had to give for now. “Hmm…. It looks like as long as a place has a scent, it could be reached even if the one being tracked isn’t around.” Sen slowly stepped through Omen’s gate and looked around, hopefully using what they could learn right now to identify what kind of test they could do to hopefully find a way to keep tabs on Rosa. This might be a good start, and the longma was getting some ideas on what they could do for a follow-up test. If scents can linger, then maybe Omen could trail someone’s movements without being right next to whoever she’s tracking. This wasn’t exactly a good time for a quick rest, but Sen was willing to wait in case the others wanted to take a breather. However, lingering in a place that wasn’t theirs is not a good habit, especially as they are now uninvited and didn’t have express permission to use the room. When they were ready to resume, the longma had another test in mind. “How about we try opening to a place like uncle’s workshop, but try picking up his scent outside the place instead of wherever he is right now?” “Sen, what is this about?” “If I am right, and this works, it means Omen’s gates don’t have to open right next to whoever she wants to reach. As long as she can pick up someone’s scent, she could follow them. I want to test this out with a safe place so we won’t get into to too much trouble. How about it, Omen? Does that make sense to you?”
  18. @Blitz Boom The siblings bowed to their friend, and they held their tongue this time to stop themselves from dragging things too long. They said their farewells, and they would leave things here for now. It didn’t seem to mind them that, even with the possibility of others spectating them, it was just their group for now and a reminder that they will meet again. Parting with the assurance that Rosa could handle himself was somewhat comforting, but it wouldn’t be enough to completely dissuade the siblings from trying find a way to check in on him. For now, moving into the desolate plateau was their move, and they’d be able to discuss things in private. With no one else around, at least seemingly, they could plan ahead and determine how to proceed on their own. “I doubt my nose is powerful enough to pick up someone’s scent. Food and other strong smells like fire are given, but something that is unique to someone… I can’t pick up on them. Places can be reached because I have a memory of them, so I just think of a place I want to go to, and it will be there on the other side of the gate.” “As for your question, I guess we should put our trust in Rosa. He is much more capable than us in matters inside and outside of battle, but there may be things that could overwhelm him. I remember that time we crossed that swamp back then, a place that showed us our deepest fears. We could have crossed it faster, but I slowed us down, and we were affected by its power. A place like that… something that could mess with our heads… it could be trouble for Rosa, but I doubt there are many more like them. Either way, this is all just to make sure he’s doing well.” Lin remembered that dreadful place. The trees seemed normal in one moment, then there’d be things all over them the next. A macabre sight, but it was only fortunate that in her fear, she found their way out. The same may not be true if they aren’t lucky the next time. With regards to Omen’s question, they could only guess, but there might be a workaround, at least for now. Omen likely would need to have someone else with her to judge a situation and see if intervention was necessary. Likewise, they might have to get in some practice on opening gates stealthily, at least to let them see events play out without having to step in or near anyone. Lin didn’t say anything more on the matter, and it was fortunate that Sen interjected. For now, the trip home could wait a little bit longer if it meant they could all come to a better understanding of each other's abilities. “Maybe we could spare some time to do a bit of testing. You say you can track beings by going to places that have someone’s scent. That might be a good place to start. Would you know if a scent could stick on something no matter how long ago it first had it? Like the guest room at Rosa’s home; if I only used it once and never went back, would that room still have my scent after several days or weeks?”
  19. @Blitz Boom Kiba, and Uddo by extension, found Rosa getting more and more interesting whenever they met, and as much as they wished they could chat, there was more work to be done. Perhaps the thestral could be a legal advocate, but that might just be wishful thinking on the older longma's part. For now, they had to part ways; their work would have to keep them busy until they gathered together once more. Likewise, the siblings would have to accept this and establish a new routine for their daily lives, something that could be tricky for them. “Flow wild and free... I just don’t like saying goodbyes. Knowing how things go in my life, that feeling of something else coming along to make things worse gets me worried. But you are right, we will meet again soon. Please stay safe.” “This will be a goodbye for now, and we will see each other again. Take care.” Sen and Lin bowed to their friend and waited until he was out of sight. They wished they could see him off in a better way, but they may just be overreacting at this point. There was no more to say, and when they were ready, the turned to the exit and left, though not before Omen could ask them something that may put their minds at ease. Sadly, the answer they would default to feels like a violation of that trust they had in the thestral. He is capable, probably more so that Sen in a fight and definitely more than both siblings in matters outside of combat. However, they’d reserve their response until after they left, preferably some place where their exchange couldn’t be heard. Knowing the kind of company present was enough of a warning to them that they’d be picking apart their movements and words at that very moment. “Not here,” Lin whispered to the Ki’Nathar. “We’ll talk about this elsewhere.” The longma started to walk a fair distance away from town until she could reasonably mask her movements through the thick foliage in the town’s outskirts. There, she’d open a gate to the solitary plateau where they kept the statue meant for Scarcity, a place that would be difficult for others to leave should anyone be stranded there. It was perfect for discussions involving sensitive topics. Sen knew her sister would be up to something like this, impressed that she was thinking more carefully about their movements. When everyone crossed over to the other side of the gate, Lin immediately closed it to avoid anyone else from entering, suspecting that they were being tailed. Knowing that they were pretty much within the presence of spies, it got the longma to consider anything, maybe making her a bit more paranoid. “I appreciate you offering to look for Rosa, but it has to be done in a way that wouldn’t draw attention to him.” “Brother is right. You could pick up scents, can you open gates near whoever you are looking for? Sort of like picking up Kiba’s scent at the workshop but opening a gate a few blocks away and just looking around a corner to see if he is all right? You don’t have to go up to him; just see if he’s in trouble, and if he isn’t, then there’s probably nothing to worry about. If this isn’t making sense to you, we could show you what I mean.”
  20. @Blitz Boom “You are persistent on this, and I do not have issues with your interest on the topic or Sen’s goal of wanting things better for the longma back home. I left my home and my kind because back then, I didn’t believe they were worth helping. I lost my friend, and Sen and Lin lost their parents, because they couldn’t see past their isolationist tendencies. The longma back home may claim to be looking for themselves and their welfare, but if they can’t save their own kind from themselves, then I can’t support them.” “Let me be clear: I have no desire to go back when I have to look after what’s already here. Call me selfish, but the longma should experience the consequences of their actions if they are to improve, even if they have to ruin themselves to do it. If you and Sen, or anyone you meet, agrees with your goal of changing the longma’s way of thinking and helping them move forward, then I hope you succeed. Maybe one day, I will rethink my stance on this, but I don’t have faith that they will see things the way you do.” Uddo wasn’t angry with Rosa for pressing the matter, but having already made up his mind on it, he didn’t see the point in wanting to go back when it was apparent that he couldn’t do anything more. His friend was gone, and there was no bringing him back. Having someone who was willing to stand by Sen’s goal was something he liked, and it made his nephew and the thestral more admirable. In a way, he could see his old friend’s persistence and positive outlook in the two, and he would use this time to give them his blessing silently, a sign of his approval and his wish for their success. As for Lin, she stood to the side and wondered about this exchange. Lin was especially distraught, having to reevaluate everything she initially thought to be the truth she stood by in her exile. Having bottled up all her anger and venting them to her brother wasn’t a healthy thing to do, but hearing what Rosa had to say, maybe he and Sen had the right idea. It would be worse seeing history repeat to more young longma who don’t deserve what the siblings went through, and there was merit to wanting to do something to save others from that kind of misfortune. “You are very interesting, Rosa. Not many can say they know a lot and back that up with proof. If I mentioned you to the other ponies I went to school with, no one would believe me. Don’t worry though, I won’t actually do that. You’re still new in town, and your privacy is important. It might be better if you got to know the town a little bit better instead of everyone coming to you.” Going off with how described his thoughts, Kiba liked having someone to talk to about this kind of stuff. Between running the store and studying, he didn’t seem to find a lot of things interesting in town. The quaint and quiet atmosphere is nice, but something about it felt rather lacking. The young longma could only imagine the interesting stories Rosa, Omen, Sen, and Lin had of their travels. It could get him to also do a bit of exploring beyond Old Canterlot. As for Uddo, he was happy with Rosa's immediate response, and he is looking forward to the next time they could meet, preferably in less crestfallen moments. Sen and Lin followed their friend, but a sense of dread loomed over them as they walked. The trip was silent, more so than normal for them, but if it was really happening, then perhaps it was meant to be. An unassuming building with a shadowy path inward… maybe a little too on-the-nose with the whole secrecy thing, but they wouldn’t question it. Once there, some words should be said, but Sen wasn’t one to mince how he was truly feeling at that moment. “Rosa… I-I… I know we’ll see each other again, but I find it difficult to say goodbye, especially to a good friend. P-Please be careful, as well. I’d hate it if something were to happen to you b-because I wouldn’t be there to help.” “We are looking forward to when we’ll meet again, but let us give you one more thing before we part. Omen, can you huddle up with us for a bit?” Both siblings thought this would be sappy, and it was already embarrassing that they were doing this in front of Rosa’s employers, but knowing the circumstances, they figured it best to tough it out. Before parting, they’d go up to their friend and hug him tightly; it was apparent that Sen wasn’t taking this well, doing his best to keep himself together but wavering in his words. Bowing was a sign of respect, but this situation felt different and called for something else. It felt like a good time to bring up something appropriate for the moment. Though all walk their own paths, the journey needed not be solitary. May the travelers never tire, ever reaching for their way. And should they ever stumble, may they find comfort in companions who will never lead them astray. “It’s a longma blessing for those who have big undertakings, and I feel like we’re heading off on our own paths now. It’s going to be different not seeing you everyday. We’ll keep in touch, but we will surely miss you until we meet again.”
  21. @Blitz Boom “Well… I wouldn’t know about a sphinx’s visit, but I usually try to keep myself out of others’ businesses. Besides, what happened between the longma and myself is something I want to put behind me, and as much as I gained knowledge and experience from my time with them, I would prefer to focus on what I have here. Let their troubles be theirs to fix because, to me, they made it clear that living with old grudges is the way they want to move forward. If anyone found them worth helping, then I won’t stand in their way, and what becomes of the longma’s future will be up to them.” Lin felt that her stance was somewhat affirmed from her uncle’s words; the same could not be said about Sen, who looked rather downcast at what he heard. It wasn’t without precedence, and he could understand where this sentiment came from, but it didn’t sound right that the longma back home were beyond hope. Maybe there was a way to prove Uddo wrong, but Sen would need to have the time to see this kind of change through. Even then, Rosa mentioned things like this would need time to move past bad histories, something that may only happen beyond his years. As for Kiba, he silently watched his father and friends speak of the topic, but he felt that he might be missing out on something that only this odd group could give him. Outside of his obligations to the family business, there didn’t seem to be anything giving him reason to see more. As much as he can consider himself blessed to have a means of living right now, he still felt rather constrained by his lot. It might not change his goals in life, but he would at least like to see more than just Old Canterlot. For now, he’d be quiet and gather his thoughts on the discussion, and when the opportunity arises, he’d learn more. “I’m with Ms. Omen here. Those are some strange things to know about, but you make it sound so simple when you’re just pulling that information. Was that all form the top of your head? Because that’s impressive.” “Draconian Hazba… I’ll keep that in mind. Hey, I know this may sound sudden, but if I find myself in trouble or curious about other matters, would it be alright if I came to you for advice? I admit I am unfamiliar with the legal aspects of Equestrian law, and it took me longer than I had hoped to even get my bearings in more civilized society. There’s no need to answer immediately, and seeing as we are pretty much living in the same town, communication wouldn’t be an issue. I wish you all the best, and I feel free to stop by anytime you need something.” The older longma would soon return to his work unless the others had more questions, though he’d was still technically on the job and would prefer to get some more work done. He’d bow to Rosa and the others, and they returned the gesture, ready to part ways for now. As much as Lin wanted to stick around, she would also like to get the tools back home to keep her end of the trades she initiated with some of the craftworkers. Even if she didn’t have a high opinion of the longma, there was a soft spot she had for a few folks, though she’d be quick to admit that this was only for upholding agreements. Never let it be said that she didn’t honor them once deals were made. “I know we have our own errands, but would be all right if we walked with you to where you need to go, Rosa? I am curious about that, unless it’s not for us, and we understand if it is. Bringing these tools back home can wait, and we aren’t in a rush to go home. So, where are we heading?”
  22. @Blitz Boom “When you put it that way, the latter explanation make some sense… I don’t know if you were told this but the longma are wary of outsiders because of a history of slavery, or something like it anyway. The details aren’t clear as to who did the enslaving, but supposedly, my ancestors were asked to help build some kind of kingdom until they were tricked into becoming the source of the labor. They had no place within that kingdom’s future once they’ve made their ‘contributions.’” “Was there more to the story? This is what’s usually repeated around the village fires when stories of our history are told to the young to teach them about why we isolate ourselves from the rest of the world.” “Sadly, that’s the extent of it. A lot of the details go missing when the story is passed by word of mouth, unlike how events are recorded here in Equestria. It’s a long shot, but you could try the town library. They’ve got lots of history books there.” Kiba was rather intrigued by this story, and it seems like Lin was capable of holding a conversation about the longma that didn’t devolve into derisive comments. The younger longma never heard of this story before, nor did he know much about what others of his kind were like. If there was more time, he might speak with his father or his new friends about what he missed out, though he might have to be careful with the topic. It still sounded like a sore spot for most of those who are knowledgeable about it. As for the older longma, Uddo was rather proud of his handiwork if Shrimp was playing with his new toy again. He seemed to have taken a liking to simple pleasures like this, and it gave some ideas for the kinds of things he’d like to have ready in case the present group were to come back. He once heard that uncles and aunts in Equestria have this knack for preparing little gifts for their younger relatives, but he wasn’t sure what that meant or why it was a thing. Maybe now he might understand a little more about the practice. "I guess it’s a matter of getting used to the odd things, but you seem to be handling it, so maybe we can do it too." “All the more reason why I asked you to look after each other. You’ve probably gone through a lot before meeting me, but there are plenty of folks out there who’d take advantage of a lack of knowledge and experience. Take this as a lesson, Sen and Lin; be attentive and perceptive. If you feel you are walking into danger, find a way out of that situation and head to safety.” “Of course, and we’ll make sure to keep that in mind for our friends.” “Good. Now back to that other thing we’re talking about… I personally don’t use them, so I wouldn’t know, but you do know something I didn’t expect. Maybe I’ll ask you about that substance in case I start getting requests from dragons. Anyway, it looks like we sorted out what you need from me here. Anything else you all need me to look over because I should really get back to work on this order.” Uddo was still rather busy despite having taken some time off from his work to handle a different kind of task. He wouldn’t say it outright, but having everyone here and chatting them all up made for a nice distraction. His current order’s client was rather specific with wanting the furniture set ready as soon as possible. However, Kiba would still be able to accommodate them for the time being. The day was rather slow at the workshop, and without too many customers present at the moment, the younger longma could afford to step outside for a bit.
  23. @Blitz Boom “That’s a rather refreshing perspective. I admit, I don’t see things the way you do about the longma, but I guess that stems from my pent-up grievances with them. As for where we came from, we honestly don’t know enough. We all like to believe we just came to be at some point in time, but now I am wondering if that is simply the case or if there is an explanation as to why the longma share appearances with ponies and dragons.” “It’s worth looking into, but this may be one of those times where we might not like the answers to that kind of question.” “Still, if it can give everyone a better understanding of themselves, then it could be worth it.” Elder Ghilan may have broached this topic before, but hearing someone other than him share the same sentiment likely indicated some possible pursuit. Sen was content to remain focused on his, knowing that the longma are worth helping despite his past experience. Unlike him, Uddo and Lin were on the same boat, but the latter started considering that she has no goals or aspirations of her own, only following her brother out of obligation. After all, if she didn’t strive for some lofty goal, perhaps her own path lay within someone else’s. Now, this was something for her to consider, a path that was solely her own but one that could come into conflict with possibilities outside of the longma. Time would tell if her prospects would lead her away from her own kind, yet she was somewhat convinced that it may be true. Her disdain for the longma made her wish she could find a life elsewhere. Uncertainty held her where she is, and the uncertainty of whether it was her emotions making her lean toward that choice made her question if it was right… “Looks like I’ll need to take it apart to make sure everything unsafe is cleared out. And regarding what you said, Ms. Omen, I think cooking oil might be a better alternative to lubricating oil. It’s also edible, even if it isn’t healthy.” The older longma got to work removing the bottom of the bell tower toy per Rosa’s suggestion. It was a fairly simple process of prying the base off and pouring out the insides. There was a not-so-significant amount of metal and plastic bits accumulated from neglect, and the it left him wondering just how much of these kinds of shavings and debris were thrown away at the scrap yard. Still, it wasn’t in poor condition, and working on it was a nice change of pace from the furniture he was focusing on just earlier. Having Shrimp sit and oversee the whole process was also an unexpected but welcomed bonus. The cleanup didn’t take long, and to ensure no more dirt or debris would end up inside, the longma took a clear plastic film and covered the window of the bell tower, along with adding some sticks on the interior to avoid creating a choking hazard. Now there’d be little chance for large teeth to cut through. Once done, the base would be returned, and the bell would be back on its original position. There’d be a bit of lubricant on the upper hinge and internals to make them move smoothly, so all that's left is a quick overall inspection for safety. It was the part where Omen was picking some of the metal bits and eating them that got Uddo and Kiba to pause for a moment. Wanting something spicy was understandable, but this one was rather absurd. “So, I take it you don’t really worry about what you eat, Ms. Omen? Or rather, should no one be worrying about that? I mean, I hear diamonds are used to build some cutting tools, and they could cut through paved roads.” “It’s odd, but Omen is… unique. Her body could handle it, so I don’t think we should worry, though that won’t stop us from worrying about her. I suppose we’re still finding balance between when to worry and when to not.” “O…kay? You probably already know this, Ms. Omen, but I don’t recommend eating diamonds because I’m fairly certain your teeth could break.”
  24. @Blitz Boom “Fascinating origins, huh? I don’t know if I can say that about the longma as a whole. Don’t take that as an offense, Sen and Lin. I didn’t mean to lump you two there.” “No problem. It’s not exactly a flattering thing to think about.” Perhaps there wasn’t anything to worry about. Rosa sounded sincere, and everyone was in agreement on the matter. Thee trust that was present in the group was evident, so there’d be no more second-guessing from the older longma, and neither would there be a disservice to them by treating them any less than mature adults. He was reminded of a saying about finding commonalities among those who didn’t fit in with others and finding belonging with themselves instead. Maybe this was an example of that, with his own niece and nephew finding their way around with decent folk. At least, that’s what he hopes. By then, things were getting a little weird and unexpected with Omen licking the oil and Shrimp getting his little head stuck in the miniature bell tower. All of the longma present would quickly jump in to assist Rosa and the little refraction, though it was apparent the thestral had the situation under control. There was a little screwdriver nearby that he could use to pry the creature’s head free. Once that ordeal was done, the older longma examined the toy with a brass pince-nez used like a magnifying glass. By the time he was done with his examination, there mix of horror and relief on his face, but not one that suggested the problem was too serious. “Oh dear. Looks like this one’s going to need more than just sticks and some repairs. The inside of the tower appears to have some jagged pieces of plastic and other bits of metallic shrapnel. None of that would be safe for consumption, especially considering where you found it.” “Good thing we avoided that, but how long would you need to have that cleared out?” “Hopefully not too long. I’m just concerned about how much of this stuff is in there and if I could get all of it out. You probably might have to come back later if you are busy with other matters. Oh, and uh… Ms. Omen? Could you refrain from, well… licking the oil?” Uddo didn’t look optimistic about the odds of him finishing the repairs to the miniature clock tower toy, but that was more on how fast he could get the other unwanted things out of it. After all, it was in his best interest to have it be safe for play, but he could try using some tweezers to start. He didn’t exactly have all of the tools that could make this work easy, but he did mention wanting to start a repair service on the side. This could be a start to that. As such, he pulled out a smaller tool box from the rear of the shop and got to work. As much as he wanted to have Kiba handle this, the delicate nature of the work meant there’d be a greater need for care to avoid breaking something important. If time permits, he could get this done and make some more progress on the table he’s working on.
  25. @Blitz Boom “You and Omen make for some strange friends for Sen and Lin, but you all talk about each other like you’ve been through some tough situations. I won’t ask for specifics, but because you’ve all convinced me that what happened isn’t really what I thought it was, then all I ask is for you to stay safe and look out for each other.” “We’ll be careful, uncle. Seeing something like what Rosa described was already enough for us to be worried.” “I hope so because it’s already bad enough that an accident could do so much damage. Oh, and if you all need help, come to me. I may not know exactly what’s going on, but I’ll do what I can to help. Just make sure you aren’t running with the wrong crowd.” The older longma wasn’t exactly happy with having more on his mind, but between his niece and nephew and their friends, it was apparent that he was beginning to treat this group as an extension of his family. Perhaps he was just getting worked up over hypotheticals, but everyone convincing him about them being careful was enough to put his mind at ease. They’re grown adults, and he wouldn’t belittle them by treating them otherwise. Perhaps one day, when things aren’t quite hectic or busy, they may just sit down and hang out. Uddo was certain that they’d have plenty of interesting stories to swap, maybe together with the rest of his family. Speaking of which… “Maybe you’re right, but knowing how uncertain the meeting might go or who ends up meeting who first, I figured going with whoever is available. However, it’ll be better if all of you are together when you meet. We’ll see how it goes.” “You know, Mr. Rosa, some see having an eye for the future to be a good thing. Being certain or prepared for what comes next and planning accordingly is something others envy.” “He speaks true, though you need not look down on yourself. I wouldn’t know where painting will take me or how it’ll help the business, but I’m certain it’s worth trying. Now for my current task, I have this furniture set for a client in the new town. A pair of nightstands and a living room table, all with floral patterns. It’s not common for clients to order such things, but it happens every now and again. You probably might want some for your home as well, so I've got a catalog over here if you'd like to look.” Uddo walked over to the shop and came back with a book for Rosa to see. It had the usual pictures of furniture pieces, as expected for homes, but a section further near the end had the sets the older longma mentioned, including the intricate floral patterns for cabinets, nightstands, and coffee tables. Meanwhile, Kiba was steadily going at his pace, already making progress on all of the tools Lin brought, as well as the rod Sen wanted. Something about this caught his attention, as it didn’t look like he was doing something related to home decorating with it. Compared to the tools Lin had, this one seemed to be more personal, but he wouldn’t be one to judge based on looks. However, bringing it up right now after what his father talked about earlier was a recipe that would raise some red flags. For the moment, the young longma grabbed some small unused boxes from the back corner of the workshop and packed Lin’s tools into three of them, corresponding to the three sets she had. Not exactly something that would qualify as brand new, but they looked clean and well oiled as if they were newly bought from a store. The siblings were impressed with everything looking shiny, and they gladly accepted the tools, especially for Lin, who figured the folks back home will also like the gifts. “Here you go, Sen and Lin, three new sets of tools and your rod all washed and oiled. How about you, Ms. Omen? Need anything checked? Maybe that bell tower your little friend’s playing with could use a look just to make sure it’s safe.”
