  1. Unfortunately, there is good evidence that the events in this story never occurred, which was heartbreaking to me when I heard.

Still, it is a fantastically gripping story.  But it probably should not have be portrayed as fact when you pitch it.

Actually there is just as much evidence that it did. Considering that these events were recorded long after the fact, they could easily have some inaccuracies. But with some compelling cases made on both ends, we can only speculate. In all fairness we can't portray speculation as fact either. Here are some interesting arguments for both sides.

  2. Teenagers are just people like anybody else. It's not like they're an alien life form or anything. Sure, they have their problems and their ways of dealing, but don't we all. A lot of people talk about teen angst, but in truth angst is not an action but a re-action to what others (parents, teachers, friends, peers) set before them.

Listen and treat them with respect, real respect and not just a facade, and in most cases they'll treat you in kind.

  3. I have a hard time getting motivated to do the things I really need to do. I get addicted to things that take little effort for quick gratification rather than work for something greater and more meaningful.

I'm also too judgmental of others at times. I'm always wrong when I'm like that and usually realize it later. Then I get self-critical for it.

  4. Normally I wouldn't think to just hit a switch and take the easy road, because life is about learning as we go. Sometimes learning is a painful process but one meant to ultimately forge a better you.

However, there are extenuating circumstances where I would make an adjustment or two. If circumstances aren't conducive to fulfilling one's potential, these things should be changed. In my opinion, there is little to be gained from waste. Wasting a human being's potential is a terrible thing.

Now, on the subject of using this concept as a means of reprogramming criminals into model citizens, I would have to say, with a great deal of difficulty, no. Because this again brings forth my original point that life is meant to teach us. Some people may take a lifetime to figure out their mistakes (behind bars if they're dangerous) but it ultimately has to be about conscious decision and free will. Otherwise we're just machines with programming. It has to be about the mind and soul.

  5. As the song goes, "I enjoy being a girl'. Sure, both sexes have something the other doesn't, one advantage or another. But that's how it's meant to be. That's why we need each other to complete the picture. Humans weren't designed to be solitary beings.

I take longer getting ready in the morning than most guys, I would imagine, but that's because I have attributes that I'm responsible for maintaining. It's work with perks.

Men have greater natural strength and can reach stuff on the higher shelves, but they have drawbacks to their existence too. They're typically the ones who must deal with engaging the opposite sex, which sadly doesn't always make it easy. When it works though, they got it good. So again, work with perks.

I appreciate both sexes for what they contribute, but I am glad to be female. It's been a good thing for me.

  6. Zombieland

I'm not your typical zombie movie fanatic but this thing is done with a humorous flair that gives it a dimension others don't have. Still ridiculous but in a good way.

    Kick Ass.

Absolute trash, I'll admit it. But it's fun trash that always has me laughing whether I intend to or not. And highly re-watchable.

    Xanadu.

Possibly the most absurd of them all. This defines niche viewing. I'm not often in the right mood for this one but when I am, there's no other movie that will do what it can. Some of the songs are decent, and I like Olivia Newton John, but those are really the only virtues I can justifiably mention here.

These three have a place of dubious honor among my dvd collection. I just hide them away when people come to visit.

  7. Zombieland

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (Just the Ichabod part)

    Monster House

    Hotel Transylvania 1&2

Ed Wood (Don't ask me why)

Beauty and the Beast (I can't explain it either)

  8. I like the Jedi more because they are good, and evil has no future.

Villain characters are cool, sure, and they do their thing with some style and even glamour. I mean honestly, Vader rocks!

But then again, so does Yoda.

in reality Jedi vs Sith should be called Wise vs Foolish. Anakin was a great Jedi but was duped into turning dark by Palpatine. Not many people are truly evil, just foolish. And they can be duped into blindly doing evil things by real evildoers too weak or shortsighted to control their own passions. Hence their very foundation is shaky from the start.

The Jedi have a harder life, but they have something lasting to gain from it; wisdom, strength and knowledge. Evil is a road to nowhere. Easy, yes, but too fleeting in its rewards. The Sith may have a cool, dynamic image, but it's a facade for a weakness that tries to convince itself and others it has strength.

So, as much as I like Vader's armor and sinister breathing, and Maul's cool facial designs, I'll stick with the earth-tone Jedi for the long haul.

  9. I like Disney in as far as the production value and the fact that they can just throw money at something until it's good. The main problem is that Disney lacks originality in their content. Sure they have good shows but they're afraid to take them off the leash to see what they can really be. They always fall into the cliche of being another morality tale, spelled out for the cheap seats. This looks good for their public image, and it's nice and safe; appealing to every demographic to some extent and selling lots of product, but it can get repetitive.

Nickelodeon, while not always as high-end, has had its fair share of quality programming. One of my favorites, the short-lived Monster vs Aliens series, was fantastic (and frankly better than the movie). It well represents their in-your-face style and really delivers good writing that appeals to all age groups without dumbing anything down.

Both sides may try to imitate the other in as far as covering a broader audience, but each should stick to what they know best. I love Disney, but the shows I record and watch the most are the aforementioned MvA and, when I can find it, Peter Rabbit.

A good similarity to this is Disney's Tinkerbell movies vs the Barbie series. Disney has the big budgets and polished look, but Barbie will always be better because it has better content than cover.

There's a place for both. I prefer the generally edgier Nickelodeon approach, but Disney, with it's appealing visual style, has just enough going on to keep me coming back.

  10. I do have a bit of a guilt complex when I spend too much time on the forums. I try to keep busy all the time and be constructive. The only problem is that I don't always have the energy to do something constructive. Coming here has been a great experience because I've met many wonderful friends with many interests. It's expanded my horizons and helped me to be less internalized (there's a time and place for both solitude and friendship). So by that reckoning, this has been constructive in that I've learned a lot of new things and gained new perspectives. And that is a wonderful thing.

  12. Hi Poly! Thems is some serious accomplishments! You'll find this is a great place to get together with the pony community. Lots of folks here with a vast range of interests and expertise.

Oh, and I know what you mean about being concerned over the quality of your posts, I always used to be the same way. I'm a little looser now and it's great. I post a lot and talk a lot so I've gotten out of the habit of really scrutinizing my posts. As long as the point comes across that's all that matters!  :squee:

Aside from that, no real advice. Just have a look around and see what you like. You'll find lots to talk about here!  ;)
