I can't say when I first became a brony, I remember seeing a trailer for the crystal empire later on and being awstroke, but that was on british TV, so I don't know when it was.     I would definitely give it a shot. The animation, story and characters improve with each movie, and it's safe to assume it will never effect the show, since the writers have said the movies are not cannon within the show.
