That's true, there have been a lot of things like that that happen. (I can't really remember any off the top of my head atm.)
That said, IF something tragic were to happen to Twilight I'd be pretty sad because even though she's a cartoon pony I still feel a connection to her I've never felt for any other character be it TV or something else.
