  1. I don't know if it was a "lesson learned" or not.  But to have absolutely no clue that Twilight was not an only child was inexcusable.  It makes a Canterlot Wedding seem like a last minute thing.  Was there no way they could have tweaked the dialogue in another season 2 episode to make passing mention of a brother?  Maybe a line of self reflection could've been added somewhere like, "My life has changed so much since I made friends in Ponyville, but I'll never forget you big brother" while looking at a star lit sky.

Also inexcusable was not having Twilight's and Shining's mom and dad at the wedding.  I can understand not wanting to commit voice actors to such fleeting roles but a cameo would've done the job just like it did in Cutie Mark Chronicles.

  2. In contrast, my mind was fixated around Yu-Gi-Oh for much of the episode. While they didn't play with duel monsters cards, the guiding principle of the game held true. Believing in yourself and your cards (in this case, spells/tactics) is the key to victory as cheesy as that might sound.

Actually, as a matter of fact, the very first scene of the episode could be taken as a Yu-Gi-Oh reference. In the anime's first episode, Seto Kaiba wanted Yugi's grandpa's Blue-Eyes badly from his game shop and would trade a lot of his already-polished decks for that one card, but Yugi's grandpa refused. In this case, the shopkeeper buckled under pressure when Trixie presented quite the hefty sum of money to him. Another glorious reference by M.A. Larson, in any case.

Thanks for posting that clip of Seto trying to buy the Blue Eyes card.  That was the first thing that came to my mind after I reflected on Magic Duel.  And who made that awesome picture of Twilight as Yugi?

  3. Oh yeah, that's Claire all right. If you've ever heard her infamous Minecraft ragequit video, you'll understand.

Do you have links for the first two memes? Never heard of Sweetie Bot.

Sweetie Bot is in the abridged/fandub series Friendship is Witchcraft which can be seen on Youtube.  The episodes "Cute from the Hip" (Call of the Cutie) and "Neigh Soul Sister" (Sisterhooves Social) portrays Sweetie Belle as a robot that looks like a real pony with a robotic voice but still demonstrates the qualities of a sentient being.

  4. It's too bad this thread is already 10 pages long, because now I want to go an brohoof the first person that identified the Yu-Gi-Oh references in Magic Duel.

I'm a bit slow picking up on stuff at times.  For instance, I criticized the alicorn amulet turning up in a magic shop when it is actually a reference to the game shop Yugi's grandpa owns in Yu-Gi-Oh.  In the first Yugi episode, Kaiba tries to buy the Blue Eyes White Dragon card by offering him a suitcase full of cash.  Grandpa refuses, but to expedite today's MLP episode, the shopkeeper takes the big sack of bits.  Twilight Sparkle saying let's duel is also a trademark phrase from Yu-Gi-Oh.  And just as Yugi relies on his friends to overcome evil, the same is true of Twilight in today's episode.  The amulet itself is an item of great power but makes its user evil, just like the power of Orichalcos used in duels against Yugi in one of the story arcs.  And the episode even ends with a reluctant face turn by Trixie, similiar to Kaiba's although it took him an entire series to stop regarding Yugi as an enemy.

And perhaps the biggest irony of the episode is this:  Twilight beat Trixie by using magic TRICKS; illusions like we see from David Copperfield.  Too bad the alicorn amulet only grants its holder a small measure of omnipotence (infinite power) but not omniscience (infinite awareness of all things) and thus Trixie was unaware of the deception being used against her.  Hopefully the amulet will be locked up in a safe place now.

  5. I wasn't overly impressed with this episode.  Any unicorn with a good basic understanding of magic would be uber powerful with that amulet.  It wasn't a fair contest.  And the amulet should've been much harder to acquire.  Something that strong would be locked in a Canterlot vault, not a cheap magic shop.

But a so-so plot was redeemed by a number of references to past episodes (unusual for a series which isn't locked into a set chronological order like most anime is).  Another Fluttertree joke was welcome but knowing that beavers chew down trees, does she STILL want to be one?  And I personally thought the acknowlegment of Rule 63 fanart was a nice touch too.  I like how Big Mac-as-Applejack acts as if he is trying to hide his new "equipment", lol!

And was a different voice actor doing Trixie, or did she just sound funny because she hasn't voiced that role in such a long time?

  6. 149 days........

I really do love this forum huh?

What do you do...have an open window on MLP Forums the entire time your computer is on?!  In any event, you get a brohoof just for that!  :)

I've also noticed that since I started this thread, total posts and time online now appear in the left hand column.  Coincidence?  Posted Image

  7. Sweetie Belle already has a number of memes dedicated to her, including Squeaky Belle and Sweetie Bot.  It looks like the list will continue to grow:

I can think of two for this one:

    Sweetie Bawl - Self explanatory

Sweetie Pot - She sounds like a boiling teapot and this one is also a nod to the aforementioned Sweetie Bot.

And did Claire do that with her own voice?  That kid has a pair of lungs!  Posted Image

  8. I voted for Applejack. And I can't believe she is currently in last place! But I will admit, Twilight is adorable as well, but my heart still goes to Applejack.

If it's any consolation, I think Applejack was the prettiest of the fillies when she was a gussied up Manehattanite.  :)  But she's a country gal at heart and she's also a workhorse, not a showhorse.

  9. I'm more or less closeted because I have no need or practical reason to shout it out to the world.  I work in an office setting and other than adult cartoons like the Simpsons or Family Guy, I know of nobody that watches cartoons.  My roommate did dry snitch the fact that I watch MLP to a vistor once, but luckily he was daydreaming when she said it.  Except for my roommate and one or two other people, nobody knows.

  10. Being an avid lover of cartoons my whole life, it is not unusual to see them in my dreams as well.  Most of them were about my favorite three cartoons of the past, the Chipmunks (80s version), the Transformers, and the Powerpuff Girls.  Here's the honest truth.  I first noticed this thread a few days ago and I was going to chime in.  I was going to bemoan the fact that, to date, I didn't have a single dream about MLP:FiM.  When I love a cartoon this much, it will inevitably appear in my dreams.  But because that didn't happen yet, I was beginning to wonder if something was wrong with me.  This was originally going to be a lament post.  But it won't be because, well, my wait ended last night.  :)  I don't remember a whole lot except that I was watching TV. Just that instead of looking like a normal cartoon, it looked like a pair of CGI ponies in a real life setting. I distinctly recall seeing blue and yellow Pegasi.  Hurray, my drought is finally over!

    Have you had any?

    I've had 3 so far:

    1. Adopting Dash as a filly. BEST. DREAM. EVER.

    2. Going into class and at each desk instead of my classmates was... Rainbow Dash.

    3. An older version of me, some random dude, and Fluttershy climb into a cop car and start running from the cops in NYC. Under the Brooklyn Bridge was a frickin' desert, and we launched ourselves from the bridge onto the desert.

...and then I woke up of sheer awesomeness. :D

Are you serious?  Number 1 sounds just like My Litte Dashie!

  11. This is a tough one.  But after giving some thought, there is only one filly to vote for:  Twilight Sparkle!  She was too adorable with her strange orchestrations as she tried to hatch the egg.  And, of course, Twi bouncing around going yes, yes, yes, at the end too!

  12. I think you guys are overlooking the fact that she's a little kid. I mean, look at the flashback for when Rainbow was telling all the CMC's how she got her cutie mark. All of those ponies in flight school looked somewhat older. Have you seen any other ponies in their grade flying? I don't recall any, and if there were, that would leave more reason to think Scootaloo will be flying soon. She's probably just too weak to fly yet. That doesn't mean she has some birth defect, or is a chicken. It just means that she is a bit to young to start flying. That's all. No reason to get all crazy with insane theory's (although, my speculation is just a theory as well) and such.

I'd have to agree with you on the ages of the flight camp ponies.  Except for Rainbow Dash herself, all the other ponies were older looking.  It's just going to be interesting to see whether Meghan McCarthy honors Lauren Faust's original concept of Scootaloo having a flying disability.  At this point, Scoots appears to be progressing but time will tell whether that continues.

  13. The only thing I can add to this is that even superstar singers often sound better in the cozy confines of a recording studio than they do live on stage.  Firework is one of Katy Perry's most popular songs yet she isn't able to sing it in tune live.  And for tonight's Rockefeller Tree Lighting program, Mariah lip synched All I want for Christmas is You.

Maybe Scootaloo is one of those singers who only sounds good in a studio?

  14. Wow, that sounds really cool that your dad seems to like the show. Heck, some bronies would be happy if they simply didn't DISLIKE it. :P Once people take the time to actually watch it, they see it's not really girly girly. But the show still has its girly moments, which usually involves Pinkie Pie singing. If that's the first thing they see in FiM, they probably jump to the wrong conclusion.
