I just put a ASUS Xonar Essence sound card in my computer and the quality is actually better. A lot better. I honestly did not think a sound card would help...

  The ASUS Xonar Essence is really nice (I paid $165) and speakers depend.
  
  Do you mind a lot of cables or would you prefer something simple? If the ladder, I would recommend the Z906 or the z5500.

  Something simple would be nice but cables don't worry me, they just make things more messy
  
  I have my bluray player going though a Yamaha sound system in the lounge room which was a pain to set up but does it's job extremely well.
  
  I would basically like something good but also not too expensive that does the job well. Difficultly isn't really a problem as if there something I don't know then I'll find it out.

  If you want something cheap, the Z906 (I think it's about $400, it may be a bit much) is really good.
  
  It is a bit weird when it comes to universal remotes, though.
