Aquaphobia

I do not trust myself (or especially other people) when around bodies of water (pools, ponds, lakes, oceans). Too many negative experiences of inhaling water or being thrown in to the deep end of pools by stupid people who thought I was kidding when I screamed persistently that I didn't know how to swim. It doesn't affect me to the point of calling it "aquaphobia", but I just don't ever involve myself with pool parties, lake trips, or oceans anymore unless I'm with people that I know I can trust not to mess with me.

If I swallow water while (attempting to swim is more accurate) swimming, my mind goes into panic mode. It took me a long time to feel comfortable letting the shower run over my face. I'm fine in showers and bathtubs though, or like I said, if I'm with people I know I can trust. If I can reach the side or bottom of the pool with my face above water, I can tolerate it; but I never actively seek out pool-time.

That said...I freakin' want a hot tub man! They're so relaxing!!

Looks like aquaphobia is way more common than I'd have anticipated. Are swimming courses not mandatory in most parts of the world? Fear of water or inability to swim are both very rare in Australia. I never imagined it's be such a common issue elsewhere in the world.
