Oh crap... I think I screwed up...

Okay long story short I was watching a review of Eragon on youtube and the moment Sophira(sp?) tells Eragon "You are my rider" my immediate thought was "Oh horse apples."

The reason being is this:"I'm guerilla marketing a short story I wrote that was published by "The Literary Yard" called The Mystic Rider, and in this story is this passage:

Rebecca came to a sudden halt in the middle of the road, before she landed in front of the unicorn who was running towards her. When Clarissa saw Rebecca, she slid to a halt, and sat in front of her.

“Are you… My… rider…?” Clarissa asked, as she was catching her breath.

Now maybe this is me think that if I'm successful in getting this story shared and read, that maybe it might be read by fans of Eragon who might assume I've seen the film, read a book and think that maybe I ripped it off for that one moment... Or maybe I'm being paranoid...

Uh, no.

Because if you have read Eragon, you'd also know that the series has elves, dwarves, etc just like Lord of the Rings.

If people liked the series despite it being a copycat of Tolkien's work to some degree, then having a "rider" in your book is completely acceptable.

And anyone who says that you are a copycat then screw them - no idea is "original" at this point, rather retellings of the same story over and over again. It's OK to have similar concepts from one story to another. If it wasn't OK, we'd be running out of books to write and movies to produce.

Point taken... Besides you also reminded me of how this comes with the territory of writing. There will always be someone who points out the similarities... Not only that but I've seen what happens when a writer tries waaaay too hard to be original, they end up creating something that makes no sense. I almost worked with such a team of writers, it was a real trip... >_>

Yeah, that line is in dozens of fantasy books. Usually referring to dragon riders, rather than unicorn riders, but still I wouldn't worry about it.
