Foals' cutie marks

I'm not sure if I'm the only one who did, but have you ever noticed that school-aged ponies' cutie marks have nothing to do with their talents and future jobs?

Let's check adult ponies' for instance:

Pinkie Pie - Party balloons - She has the talent to make parties

Applejack - Three apples - She's an apple farmer

Fluttershy - Three butterflies - She has the talent to befriend and be listened by animals

Now let's check young ponies':

Featherweight - A small feather - No talent to derive from a small feather, plus his talent is to be a photographer

Silver Spoon - A silver spoon - Just because she's rich, unless her talkent is to cook which is never confirmed

Twist - Two candy canes - More related to her name than to her unknown talent

Now let's check the talented:

Scootaloo - Riding a scooter - No cutie mark

Sweetie Belle - Singing - No cutie mark

Applebloom - Farming - No cutie mark

So how would the cutie-mark theory apply here?

I think that the writers made a loophole here. Theoretically, the CMCs should've had their cutie marks by now.

Hmm. Well, I know that Twist's talent is making candy canes (or some other sort of treat) as said in Call of the Cutie.

Also, I'm pretty sure Apple Bloom's talent is in construction, not farming... although it's probably a little of both.

Apple Bloom isn't a farmer, Apple Bloom builds stuff out of wood.

(edited)

I like to think the cutie marks can "evolve" (I read that somewhere in the forums): the ones they have might not be definitive and can change as they grow up...

(the episode The Cutie Mark Chronicles contradicts that though)

Anyway, I agree the cutie marks of Featherweight, Silver Spoon, Twist (among others...) are stupid and don't represent their real talent... >_>

I was actually thinking something similar, I had the theory that cutie marks can change with time specially if the pony is a late bloomer :muffins:

I never really paid much heed to the cutie marks of the younger ponies, largely because their purpose is for the kids other than the CMCs to have their cutie marks. I don't exactly think the show's staff lost sleep over this stuff. That said, it's possible Featherweight had talents and/or passions other than photography. Perhaps he enjoys bird watching. Skill at photography could be handy in taking snapshots of creatures who can be there for a moment, but gone in an instant. I think his cutie mark is a feather because...Featherweight...yeah. I really don't think much thought was put into that.

Silver Spoon...same thing. Maybe she makes a really good stew. Maybe her family runs a silverware shop, and she's destined to take over the family business. Maybe she should get some actual development, as opposed to existing purely for Diamond Tiara to have a lackey. I think the reason for Twist's cutie mark was actually touched upon in season 1 episode 12, though it has been a while for me, so I could be wrong.

As for the CMCs, I think the main reason why they don't have their cutie marks, is that it's a plot device, and kind of a part of their identity by this point. If we start trying to rationalize it, it just falls apart, so let's not pull that particular loose thread. I'm kind of back and forth myself on the idea of them getting their cutie marks. On one hand, it'd provide some much needed character development, and their episodes could continue to revolve around other things. On the other, they wouldn't be the CMCs anymore, and as repetitive as that plot point can be, later seasons have managed to find some variety in cutie mark pursuits, and it works as a motivation for them to try things.

Then again, if they get their cutie marks, there could be a follow up episode about the changes that come with growing up. After they get their cutie marks, they could wonder what to call themselves, and be troubled by what to spend their time doing, and/or what to use their clubhouse for. I'd like to see an awesome future vision episode first though, where their adult selves make at least a minor cameo, and their cutie marks are censored by various objects and other ponies obstructing our view of them.:P
