BronyPony 575 July 15, 2014 Share July 15, 2014 (edited) So, as I am working on my current social network idea, I am also thinking of combining to personal drones, which would by little flying drones that simply are connected to your smartphone or tablet in your pocket(or backpack) which follow you around and carry out tasks for you. The idea is the smartphone or tablet would be wirelessly connected and, using that connection, would follow you at a particular range(this setting could be changed). People with these personal drones can download little subapps(which connect to an app on the smartphone) which receives information(text-to-speech) from the drone you speak to(the owner). The drone would only carry a camera and a mic(connected to a small device that is light weight enough to allow the personal drone to fly) for which these commands can be carried out. Here is one particular use for this. Let's say you are going into a store and you have a list of things you need, but don't know where they are in the store. On your smartphone, you can give this list to the drone which will then go through the aisles of the store(through possible and simple tracking programming) and search it using images of the camera(turning imagery into text), which will then be sent back to your smartphone or tablet and the personal drone would have pinpointed where the items were located. Another use is the mailing system. Let's say you want to deliver a small package to someone a small parameter, but you are too busy to do so. You don't want to spend money on sending packages either. You could have your drone deliver it for you. Using the social networking idea I have, where your friend's location is available, the personal drone retrieves this information and simply goes to the location on the social networking site. I know this is merely the idea stage, but I wanted to see what other people thought of it before going into it. EDIT: Please don't argue with the common 'Terminator' argument. We all know the chances of this with personal drones is very, very unlikely. Edited July 15, 2014 by BronyPony
Callisto 1,877 July 15, 2014 Share July 15, 2014 (edited) I'm not technologically inclined, so I can't comment on that. I just wanted to say that this would be super awesome. Edited July 15, 2014 by Callisto 1 Y'know, I've been on this site for almost ten years and I've never had a proper signature. Ain't that something? Twilight Dirac 721 July 15, 2014 Share July 15, 2014 Sounds like a cool project. Your going to spend a lot of time programming the AI. Also be aware the electric powered VTOL drones (you probably want to avoid using a gas powered vehicle for this) usually get 10 - 20 minutes tops off a lithium charge. I fly electric RC helos so if you want any advice on the topics just go ahead and PM me.
Admiral Regulus 2,769 July 15, 2014 Share July 15, 2014 Cool idea, I admit. However... It would be far more efficient if you could download an app from the store, and that would tell you where everything is located. It could be just like searching Google, but it would give you an answer like: Search: Peanu... Search suggestions: Peanuts: In stock. Isle 7, bottom shelf. Peanut butter: In stock. Isle 4, bottom and middle shelves. Mixed nuts, with peanuts: In stock. Isle 7, middle shelf. If it's a small package, you could just put it in your mailbox. If it's just a message or a note, you could always fax it or send it via email. I like the novelty of your idea, and I'd support it just for the awesomeness of having a personal drone fly around me. That said... I don't think it's all that necessary, as there are more efficient ways of solving most problems. Tumblr

They were some ideas that I came up from the top of my head because I didn't think much of an app for the drone right now. EDIT: Another dumb idea would be for vlogging. If you are walking, the personal drone could record you and it wouldn't shake as much. Edited July 15, 2014 by BronyPony
Admiral Regulus 2,769 July 15, 2014 Share July 15, 2014 Haha, I know how it is. It's the detrimental aspect of being an overexcited engineer. As I said, though... I do like the idea. I'd buy a personal drone even if it's just for the purpose of saying that I have a personal drone. It seems like something that could be a hell of a lot of fun to tinker with. Just wondering, do you know any applications for a personal drone? Since people can make apps for their drones to carry out tasks(using the cam and mic and speaker)?
