TheMarkz0ne 962 August 11, 2014 Share August 11, 2014 I am trying to upgrade my PC by december of this year or wait till early 2015. Winodws 9 is coming out and I am getting a SSD then migrating my HDD over. But I can afford to upgrade some components. I really really want SLI 780s. But I think that's going too far. GTX 660 2GB 16GB DDR3 i5 3570k 3.40ghz(not overclocked) Asus LGA 1155 PAZ LX model ( no sli support ) 600w corsair psu blu ray drive( movies only) Realtek HD sound 2 TB Windows 7 HDD 1 TB Ubuntu HDD WAN card is junk Cooler Master hyper 212 I am specualting that the PSU will need to go up to 750. I also might settle for just a single 770. But I really want to get the most out of gaming. I can't afford 4K gaming, maybe we can aim for 2K. boiteporte 591 August 11, 2014 Share August 11, 2014 Your PSU is fine. The only things you need to change are your CPU and GPU. For your CPU, you might want to go for an Intel Core I7 4790. I'm not sure about the number but I think that is the latest one which has a core clock of 5.0 GHz . (higher if you overclock it.) You would probably need to change your motherboard as well. Now, for the graphics card, going for the top-ends graphic cards is not a reasonable choice and you need to be aware of that before buying. This is because, as you reach the top graphics card, the ratio performance/price becomes really bad. So, a GTX 770 would be good. However, if you are willing to pay the price, then you can go for a GTX 780 but no higher due to budget constraints. I hope you'll find my reply useful.

So if I just change the mobo, cpu and GPU I'm looking at nearly 1000 usd. But how can 600w be decent? I know my GTX 660 just barely beats the PS4's gpu. The PS4 barely qualifies for native 1080p while the X1 can barely do 900p. The GTX 660 is a serviceable card. But I want to be able to reap the benefits of Metro Redux at it's maximum

The GTX 660 is enough to play it on Medium-High, I think. Both consoles use a customised AMD graphics card. Xbox One uses a graphics card with performance between 7770 and 7790 PS4 uses a graphics card with performance between 7850 and 7870. I am not sure your GPU is better than the PS4's GPU. If you feel it is too expensive, you can always swap for AMD. They are not as good but they are much cheaper. For the GPU, if you compare AMD and Nvidia : If you compare the equivalent cards, you would find that Nvidia usually has a 20 % increase in performance for a 50 % increase in cost and even more for high-end (780, Titan). I heard the Titan was really for rendering work over gaming. The 780ti is better actually. The Titan just has more CUDA cores for other purposes. I figure if I can afford it I will try to. boiteporte 591 August 11, 2014 Share August 11, 2014 I figure if I can afford it I will try to. Buying a Titan would be The Worst Decision ever. The GTX 780 Ti is actually much better. And that is because the Titan is more aimed at professional people (the Cuda cores you mentioned) and the (useless) 6 Go memory. When I bought my computer, I bought the GTX 780 because the GTX 780 Ti was not out yet. If it was available, I would have gone for a 780 Ti.

The mobo and GPU are fried. I have a transformer tablet for general browsing. This is what I'm talking about. Companies punishing the consumer for something with an awful design. I don't care how computer literate someone is. I know people in my family who are certified specialist and they even have a hard time here and there. They even agree with me that Microsoft and hardware manufactures are screwing people over. Edited August 11, 2014 by TheMarkz0ne

Gabe Newell is trying to get Linux as a secondary gaming OS if not a dominant one. Microsoft has a monopoly on gaming for PC alone and that's why they could care less if the X1 failed, because Microsoft isn't gaining profit from the xbox brand. They're worth $400b USD I think and they're slightly beneath IBM. I think Ubuntu has potential. I love Windows 7 and to be quick here, I think it's disgusting Microsoft is forcing people out of Windows 7 just because no one liked Windows 8. I can understand forcing people out of XP. But Windows 7 is a better option for dual booting with Windows 9 when it comes out. The benchmarks for W8 are not drasticly better or significant over W7. I do have it (I managed to get it for free through the company I work for and I never say no when it's free), and I find that there is no improvement over Windows 7. The Metro interface is just horrible ( I do not have 8.1). But, Linux, I don't know, people talk about console commands. It looks straight out of the 80s..... Does Ubuntu come with a GUI ? I'm not a Linux pro. I am new to Ubuntu and basically how Linux works is different distros. We have Debian which is the oldest Linux OS( in recent years). Then we have Ubuntu, Lubuntu and Kbuntu which like Debian, are free and in my opinion not hard to use after you learn how things work. Linux really has no viruses. Apple's OS does. Apple and Linux are UNIX based and that's what Valve's steam box is going to be as well. I'm not a Linux pro. I am new to Ubuntu and basically how Linux works is different distros. long gone 8,929 August 11, 2014 Share August 11, 2014 Okay, let's get back on topic here. JayzTwoCents suggested spending about 30% of your budget on the GPU. So, let's say you have a $1000 budget. Spend $300 of that on the GPU, such as a GTX 770 or an R9 280X. Also, spend less on the processor than the GPU. Same with the motherboard, spend less on that. Although it's not entirely the best-balanced system in the world, here's my own planned build as an example.
boiteporte 591 August 11, 2014 Share August 11, 2014 Linux really has no viruses Just wait until it REALLY gets popular. However, even though Mac OSX is UNIX-Based, Linux is not. A little explanation : Linux is UNIX-Like. However, it is not based on UNIX as the system Core is incompatible (due to Copyright issues with AT&T). It is inspired by UNIX but not based on it. Mac OSX is based on UNIX and they have to pay for the license.
