I want some help budgeting for a better PC(GAMING)

Okay, let's get back on topic here.

JayzTwoCents suggested spending about 30% of your budget on the GPU. So, let's say you have a $1000 budget. Spend $300 of that on the GPU, such as a GTX 770 or an R9 280X. Also, spend less on the processor than the GPU. Same with the motherboard, spend less on that.

Although it's not entirely the best-balanced system in the world, here's my own planned build as an example.

But what about future SLI support? I am going to have to shed some extra dollars on a motherboard that can support it.

Asus Z97-A supports SLI, only up to two-way though.

my PA877 V LX is single support only. I know I am going to get in the 1k realm. But honestly I am not going overboard and getting dual 780s.

Would a single 770 be a good alternative then? It's still a powerful card.

That was the card I originally wanted to aim for. I can afford it now actually, but want to wait for Windows 9 and bigger SSD. But after seeing Metro Redux... I could get a 780 probably.

Probably. Well, I'll just leave this here, gives some pretty good advice for getting the most out of your budget.

I'm looking for pure 1080p and maybe 2k. I don't buy the 4K propaganda. Because the US doesn't have the fiberoptic infostructure to stream 4k.

4K is possible today, it's just wicked expensive to get the hardware needed to run even some older games at that resolution and the monitors still aren't cheap. For 1080p, even a GTX 760 will be fine.

I know you're the networking expert. But last time I recall the internet in the US is terrible and streaming beyond 1080p and cloud gaming are not even stable. I seen cloud gaming fail on youtube streams and I don't like companies are saying cloud services are optimal.

Internet in the US is terrible, but you don't need the Internet to play games in 4K. Just set the resolution to 3840x2160.

Yeah for hardwired downloads that's there. But just like 1080p, it will take a while for it to become the standard. Just like when blu ray was new, no one could afford native 1080p. People were using 480p on blu ray ( the PS3 ) and using 1080i

It will take time for it to become standard, yes, but in the meantime, there's 1080p and 1440p.

can you support 1440p? Because that would be nice to have.

With my laptop, no. 1080p is the most I can get. I would like to get a 1440p monitor in the future, but that would require a more powerful PC.

I am learning PCs and my friend in real life can be stubborn. He is spending money on things he doesn't need. He plays Fallout 3 all the time. That's cool and all. But he wants dual 780tis and the best motherboard. He has a 2K monitor that his card doesn't support. Hell, he can't even support the 120hz refresh rate. He is always telling me " best on the market" like I don't know any better. He isn't spending wisely. Even Metro Redux doesn't need 780ti SLI. You can get the ultra settings with a 780 3GB.

Well, if you're still learning PCs, then may I suggest LinusTechTips and JayzTwoCents? I'm subscribed to both and feel I've learned a lot from them.

I am ignorant actually. I find learning for free on youtube is better than blowing on a degree that doesn't guarantee me a job. My nextdoor neighbor in my hometown is a PC god and he has no paper credentials.

I wouldn't say that I am 100% knowledgeable about PCs too, but Linus and Jay both taught me much. Now, how about if we begin working on a budget? That, to me, is one of the most important steps in building a PC.

Well the CPU and GPU need to be upgraded. I guess the 770 would be awesome. The GTX 760 is not a big jump from a 660.

Yeah, I'd say go for the 770. As for the CPU, it still should be fine. Haswell and Devil's Canyon were evolutionary steps rather than revolutionary ones.

@TheMarkz0ne

I can put together a list for you but I need to know a few things:

Location: I need to know what country you live in so I know what currency to use.
Budget: i need to know how much your willing to spend
Peripherals and other: I need to know if you need peripherals and or the OS.

I am in the US

I am willing to go to 1,000 but 800 is my goal.

I am upgrading to Windows 9. So an SSD is in the equation.
